For those us who had dismissed typhoon Nari her offspring managed to kick back with a little vengeance just in time for the first leg of our Annual tournament  at Lanna golf course. Conditions were expected to be a little soggy after several days of rainy conditions but after a positive forecast from the Thai Forecast Agency we were surprised by rain tanking down while 13 groups teed off.

Some Committee members and members decided to take up the Maejo Captain’s proposal to play off the forward tees as endorsed by the USGA and while confirming the accuracy of our handicap system the participants were unanimous in declaring that other than enjoyment it made no difference to the final scoring.

The Committee had decided to award prizes in the following categories. Low Net and runner up, Best Stableford and runner up, and best front nine and best back nine. The winners were as follows:

  • 1st Low net Rob Lassig with 73 net
  • 2nd Low net Stuart Lecki with 75 net
  • Front Nine Graham Best 19 points (there was a mistake made because a wrong Tee Box was used to calculate the Result)
  • Back nine Stuart Duncan 20 points
  • Stableford 1st Steven Bjorge with 41 points
  • Stableford 2nd Yung Beece with 40 points

The Committee congratulates all the winners and thanks the members for their participation and their commitment by participating in unfavorable conditions.

We had 47 Players today and 3 guests playing at the wet but gorgeous Gassan Khuntan Golf Course. This is without any doubt the most scenic Venue around the Chiang Mai area. The conditions were tough and manifested in the overall Scoring. The Gassan Khuntan Management prepared a nice Banner at the entrance of the Pro shop which greeted all Chiang Mai Social Golfers. We have not seen that much courtesy anywhere else yet.

Luckily we were allowed to Tee off on the front and back which ensured a much better flow around the Golf Course for everyone.

As for the Winners today:

  • 2nd Low Net with 73 – Jerry Buckley
  • 1st Low Net with 69 – Dao Beece
  • Front Nine highest Stableford with 18 – Jim Catterson
  • Back Nine highest Stableford with 18 – Paul Coppens
  • Stableford runner up was with 38 points – Len Sparrow
  • Stableford Winner with 39 points – Frank Schwarz

Remember that each Player can only win in one category. The Low Gross today with 77 – Frank Schwarz.

The Committee want to thank all participants for a great day and we see you at Maejo next Tuesday for the 3rd leg of the Annual Tournament.

Mae Jo: Tuesday 29 October 2013

34 members entered the competition for the third leg of the CMSGs Annual Tournament at Mae Jo, teeing-off in a mist on a course softened by overnight rain. We were fortunate to be able to tee-off simultaneously on the front and back nines.

Frank Schwarz came in with an 81 to take the low gross honours. Dao Beece continued her good play in the earlier legs to take second place low net with a 74. Jerry Buckley won low net with a 70.

In the Stableford competition, four players earned 20 points on the front nine – after the countback, Jimmie Catterson was the front nine winner due to his birdie on hole no. 7. Pranee Buckley won the most points on the back nine with 19 points.

The second place overall best Stableford points would have gone to Gordon Langtry with 37 points — unfortunately,  he did not enter the competition, so Frank Schwarz took second place with 34 points. Welcome back Gordon!

First place overall Stableford points went to Graham Adams, who had an amazing round resulting in 48 points to set a new record for CMSGs at the Mae Jo course – well done Graham – and enjoy your new handicap!

Afterwards, we enjoyed lunch and drinks at the new “clubhouse” of the Mae Jo CMSGs, affectionately known as the ‘CaddyShack’. Thanks to everyone for coming out to share a very enjoyable day of social golf.

Today at the last leg of the Annual Tournament we had 43 Members and six guests playing at Doi Inthanon on a rainless but rather warm day. Some Members decided to arrive one day earlier to test the grounds and get a feel for the Beer. The Event started even 15 minutes earlier than scheduled. The Course was in excellent conditions. The staff was extremely helpful and very friendly.

All groups finished in about 4 hours and 30 minutes and everyone seemed to have enjoyed the day and company (well, of course some more than others).

Some good Scores were returned and so the Winners today are:

  • Lowest front Nine: Jack Cooper
  • Lowest back Nine: Stuart Duncan
  • 2nd place Net: Gerry Brimacombe with a 72
  • 2nd place Stableford: Stuart Lecki with 39 points
