Match Reports from January to March 2016

Inthanon, 30.03.16

Considering the hot and dry conditions keeping many members away the attendance of 9 players, including one guest, made the Nomads competition interesting.

Ralph Hamilton was sorely missed but he had declined to give others a chance,so the handsome and highly skilled TERRY REDDING was a popular and deserving winner.

STABLEFORD NASSAU

31/3/16

22 members, including new member, Preeya Lounsbury, came out for the last round of March at Mae Jo. Welcome, Preeya!

Under typically hazy skies the scoring overall was quite good with the only thing missing being a 3 made at #9. Due to this fact, it will remain the birdie hole in April until it has been tamed and the prize restarted.

Winning the front nine with 20 points apiece were Ric Cameron and Michael Kuzmich.

Taking the back nine with a strong 21 point performance was Stuart Duncan who just returned from his Hua Hin holiday ( Shame on you Jeff C. ).

And personally witnessing the best overall score, 41 points, posted by our own Mr. Secretary/Treasurer, Rob Grootenhujis.

See  you all tomorrow at Mae Jo as we begin April’s weekly events with a straight Stableford Comp.

Cheers!

Lanna, 28.03.16

STABLEFORD

29-3-16

17 members came out to Lanna and 16 participated in the day’s competition under hazy skies per usual for late March.

Scoring was below average perhaps due to the fact that most of the fairways could double as auxiliary runways for CNX.

Just an observation. Nothing personal.

The good news is we all got around in just about 4 hours even as the low season kicks in.

Finishing 4th alone today was Jeff Dwyer with 32 points.

We had a 3 way tie for 1st today between Lennart Larsen, Julian Wing and Barry Ochwita with 34 points apiece.

Congratulations to All!

NET STROKE PLAY WILL BE HELD NEXT MONDAY, APRIL 4TH COURSE 3+1 DESPITE RUMORS TO THE CONTRARY. PLEASE REFER TO WEEKLY EVENTS CALENDAR LATER THIS WEEK!!!!

North Hill, 25.03.16

Only 11 members braved the hot smoky conditions at North Hill today, and nobody else was on the course so it was a pretty quick round yielding quite a range of scores.

Mr Smile seriously needs some putting practice and also managed to lose half a dozen balls so he is not adorning the photos lately. In third place was Shaun Stewart with 34 points, and in second place was Peter Brown with 36 points, but is there no stopping this man Ralph Hamilton who once again made this course look more like a “pitch and putt” with a staggering 45 points? Must be using his winnings for lessons on the quiet.

See you all next week.

Mae Jo, 25.03.16

STABLEFORD

27/3/16

Perhaps it is the North in North Hill but up here at Mae Jo the air was equally smoky but much cooler than in the north as a whopping 15 members came out for the day’s stableford comp.

Only one more shot at #9 remains for next Wednesday’s comp as no one has conquered it this month.

Some pretty good scoring for a smallish group and really good by the top 3.

Placing 3rd alone with 37 points was Nigel Stubbs.

Then along came Michael Kuzmich (upsetting Nigel) to finish 2nd with a strong 40 points.

And then in the final group of the day, Kenny Jones blew them both away with 43 points to take the 1st place prize.

Enjoy your new handicap on the 1st tee, 1st group next Wednesday,Mr Jones.

Last round of March@ Mae Jo- Stableford Nassau.

Enjoy the remainder of your week’s end.

Cheers!

Inthanon, 23.03.16

A quiet day, only 6 players probably due to the heat and course condition. Faiways brown, bone dry and hard as a bargirl’s heart.

Greens were green however and good.

Winner was Ralph Hamilton with 42 points. Ralph’s scores go up and down like a yo yo so no photo this week as the Handicap Police are starting to look at him.

CMSG members should note the course is vitually empty this month, making for relaxing rounds.

Mae Jo, 23.03.16

INDIVIDUAL NET STROKE PLAY

24/3/16

19 members trekked over to Mae Jo yesterday including the Hopkins’ boys, Jim and son Willy. And as we say hello to Willy we say goodbye and bon voyage to our adviser emeritus, Frank Schwarz , who departs for the U.S. and the D.R. tomorrow.

Only 2 more tries at #9 left this month as no birdies were yet again yielded. Hope they move the tees back up soon. A tough hole made tougher!

Some reasonable and not so reasonable scoring was posted and in the end it was Nigel Stubbs placing 3rd with a net 74. (Sorry about #12 Nigel!)

Kenny Jones coming in 2nd place with an even par net 72 and shooting net 70 to take the day’s comp was Ireland’s own, Dennis Byrne!

Congratulations to all and hope to see you tomorrow for a straight Stableford.

Lanna, 21.03.16

On this glorious Monday morning (traffic is way down because of all Thai school’s vacation) 19 member came out to compete in the Stableford Nassau format.

We started on time and with not too many groups in front of us we all made it around in good time. There was some serious good scoring out there.

We say good bye to Mark Morriss who is going back to England for something called “work”. We wish him well and hope for a speedy return to Thailand.

With no further a due, the Winner of the front nine with 24 points was Barry Ralston, tied for the back with 21 points were Joy Gariano and Mark Morriss. And the overall Winner with a whopping 44 points was Lightning (Lennart) Larsson.

Congratulations to all Winners. We see you again next Monday for a straight forward Stableford competition led by Captain Mike.

North Hill, 18.03.16

It was another nice day at North Hill, and fortunately not too hot.

We had 27 members and 1 guest arriving before 8am, and there were no late comers so we had a comfortable 7 groups teeing off the first and tenth tees. Some of the Maejo regulars who had not played here before might have found the course a little challenging, but it can be an unforgiving course for North Hill regulars sometimes too.

We had a tie for 3rd place  – Yung Beece and Roengrunee Chumarom with 34 points. Christian Friis took second place with 35 points, and Ric Cameron burned up the course to win outright with 41 points.

Next week (25th) we have 5 tee times booked from 8:30am so come and enjoy.

Inthanon, 16.03.16

At this months away game at Doi Inthanon we had (39) members and (2 guests) teeing off the front nine and the back nine as scheduled at 9:30 AM. We played under extremely hot conditions but thankfully there were breezes through-out the day that made it somewhat more bearable. Due to our recent drought conditions in the Chiang Mai area all the fairway were completely brown from being parched by the sun coupled with the majority of the water holes being completely empty. On  the bright side all of the greens were in great condition and extremely fast. We all completed our respective rounds in approximately 4 1/2 hours.

As far as the results we has various members posting some great scores.

The following is a summary of the results:

1st Place                                    Ralph Hamilton                                                                                           44 Points

2nd Place                                 Julian Wing                                                                                                   37 Points

3rd Place ( 3-way tie)            Ric Cameron, Dennis Beaudoin, Roengrudee  Chumarom                 36 Points

4th Place ( 7-way tie)           Christian Friis, Mike Mason, Kim Anderson, Lennart Larsson, Prajat Bacchi, Robert Green, Keith Freeman                                          35 Points

In closing we extend our thanks to all the members for participating today and making this another successful outing hopefully being enjoyed by all the (39) members.

Lanna, 14.03.16

Today we had (20) members that all arrived on time and resulting in (5) foursomes. We teed off a few minutes early today and all the groups completed their respective round in a little over (4) hours. The weather at the start was ideal but typical for March it became increasingly hotter on our final last few holes. On a positive note we still could see the mountain today as the smoky season has not arrived in full as of yet.

Relative to the Stableford results we had a few members posting some good scores.   The winners are as follows:

1st Place                                                  Soren Neilsen                                                                  39 points

2nd Place                                                Lawrence Nahlik                                                             37 points

3rd Place ( 3-way tie)                           Steve Matcalf, Mike Mason, Lennart Larsson          36 points

Hats off to all of today’s winners!

North Hill, 11.03.16

Another good day for golf at North Hill today. Good conditions for the 13 members, although the already tricky greens were full of surprises having just had some sand added. Most scores were in the thirties however.

The winner today was Soron Nielsen with 36 points closely followed by the runner-up Garry Walker with 35 points. Captain Garry has passed control to Keith Freeman for today and the next 8-9 weeks.

Have a nice cruise Garry and JJ.

Next week (18th) we have 8 tee times booked from 8:30 because Maejo will be closed and we are anticipating a larger than usual turnout, so please arrive early.

STABLEFORD

12/3/16

18 members including our favorite Dutch boys, Anton & Joop, came out to Mae Jo under what became even hotter than Wednesday conditions.

#9 continues to win this month’s selection as the prize hole as no one again made 3 there. No play at Mae Jo next week as we are at Inthanon on Wednesday for March’s away game and at North Hill next Friday due to maintenance at Mae Jo ( see above report from Keith Freeman ).

Only one golfer shot better than his handicap and that was Jeff Dwyer with 37 points good for 1st place alone.

4 golfers tied for 2nd place a distant 3 points behind Jeff and they were: Anton Bujiis, Julian Wing, Ric Cameron and Silvan Schwarz.

Congratulations to all!

Have a great week end, Bon Voyage to JJ & Garry and see the rest of you at Inthanon and North Hill next week!

Lanna, 07.03.16

With 26 members (one joined today) arriving at an rather empty Golf Course this morning at Lanna. Playing the monthly Stroke event on Course 3 and 1 we teed off 10 minutes ahead of time. Some good scoring out there today.

In 4th place with a net 72 was Mike Mason who just came back from Kiwi country, tied for 2nd place with a net 70 was Keith Freeman and Kim Stogner. Todays low net 69 was shot by Dennis Beaudoin.

A warm Welcome to our new Member Ryan Messenger.

North Hill, 04.03.16

There were 20 members in attendance today, 18 in the competition and two new members qualifying for handicaps. A little warm on the course today and some interesting pin positions on the greens to test everyone out and many of us were found wanting. Only one managed to play to handicap today and that was Roscoe Butler playing from the yellow tees with 36 points, following up in a three way tie were Ric Cameron, Peter Haddon and Rob Grootenhuijs.  Once again we had someone turn up late, please be at the course prior to 8am to be in the draw which takes place at 8am sharp.

North Hill has just introduced Sports Days on Tuesdays & Thursdays for 700baht green fee and 300 baht caddy fee.

Lucky 16 came up again today as we had 4 four balls tee off #1 promptly @ 7:36 a.m. , and unlike my colleague at North Hill, everyone was present and accounted for 25 minutes before our start time!!! Keep up the good work members!!!

#9 survived again without yielding a 3 so the pot continues to grow for next Wednesday’s Stableford Nassau.

The course  is looking and playing better the last few weeks for the record.

Tying for 2nd place today with 36 points were yours’ truly, Julian Wing and  Keith Taylor.

Resuming his recent fine play and taking 1st in the comp was our own, El Presidente, Jack Kuzina.

Congrats to all!

Enjoy your week end and FYI, I have a straw hat in the Committee locker @ Mae Jo which Howard Aspin turned in to me last Monday @ Lanna.

Please see me to claim it.

Cheers!

3/3/16

Alright already, I know I blew it again as I write this report 24 hours later. Blame it on the quality group at the Caddie Shack and too many Leos.

An even 16 members came out for Wednesday’s Comp and the weather again was perfect and the scoring certainly reflected it.

This month’s birdie hole #9 went unclaimed but there were birdies a plenty on the non designated holes.

Driving the ball well all day long and posting 38 points was Keith Taylor good for 3rd place.

In second alone with 39 points was Rob Grootenhuijis and making 2 of those birdies and shooting 78 of the stick was Yung Beece with 41 points taking 1st in the day’s comp. His caddie was also quite pleased with all 4 caddie holes!!

Well done, gentlemen!

Another Stableford is on the schedule for Friday as well as a growing birdie pool prize.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers!.

1/3/16

I do it at Mae Jo so why not Lanna? A day late and a dollar(baht) short. Story of my life. But enough of this blather.

It was a beautiful morning for golf yesterday as 20 members, 2 new members still working on 5 cards and 1 guest, Dave McComas (geta that registration form into Garry Walker @ North Hills Friday!! ) came out to tackle the Army’s Mae Rim Road Gem.

Tying for 2nd place with 34 points were Howard Aspin and Julian Wing ( Sorry, Julian).

Taking the grand prize alone was the recently hot Jomo MacDermott with 36 points.

Frank has the reigns next Monday for Course 3 and 1 Net Stroke Play.

Until then keep the faith!

Cheers!

North Hill, 26.02.16

It would appear that the overcast skies frightened some of our golfers away today but the cool temperatures were a welcome change to our comfort zone for playing a round. Only 12 golfers today, 9 in the competition, one new member playing for handicap and two previous members/visitors. Welcome to our new member Joel who has played three rounds with us to date and joined cmsg today but heading back to the States very soon.

Cooler temperatures did not mean better scores, in fact very ordinary rounds by all concerned.

Winner today with 34 points was Shaun Stewart and the runner up was Peter (smiley) Haddon with 31 points. Lennart provided a bit of amusement today with the head coming off one of his woods and reaching the ladies tee. Better luck next week everyone.

27/2/16

24 members and 1 guest, Jan, came out under overcast skies to Mae Jo yesterday. Jan will be joining us later this year after his return from Holland.

We say good bye to our Handicapper, Harry Nieuwland, for the next 7 weeks as he once again resumes his royal duties as The Prince of The Philipines. Safe travels your Highness!

#18 once again went without being birdied so remember that prize continues to grow when the  designated birdie hole for March becomes #9.

Some pretty good scoring by our top 3 finishers were posted starting with Jimmy Catterson’s 38 points which took 3rd place.

Taking 2nd with 40 points was Yung Beece who may have wished for that number on Wednesday. Jack?

And lapping the field with a super strong 44 points was Andy Galwey.

Well done guys and enjoy your new handicap indexes!!

Everyone enjoy the rest of your week’s end and see you next Wednesday @ Mae Jo or perhaps Lanna this Monday as I am acting captain this week.

Cheers!

TWO MAN COMBINED STABLEFORD

25/2/16

Good Morning. Back to my old tricks of writing report the day after. I’ll blame it on my recent trip to Lao with the president pictured below who believe me showed no such ill effects.

24 members forming an even 12 teams came our for the 1st combined two man event which is handicap & POY eligible.

Some very good scoring was achieved along with some unbelievable scoring.

Finishing 2nd with 79 combined points was the aforementioned Jack Kuzina (46 points) and Yung Beece (33 points).

Great but not good enough as the team of Harry Nieuwland (43 points) and Nigel Stubbs (40 points) came in with a total of 83 points to take the comp.

No birdie on #18, however, so come on out Friday for the last crack  before the hole is changed for March.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers!

Another beautiful day at North Hill with 11 members in the competition and 2 visitors soon to be new members Teeing off on a near empty course even though it is a public holiday here in Chiang Mai Thailand.  Smiley continues his good form on this course (and others) but was narrowly beaten today by Nachaya who came home with 41 points to Smiley’s 40 points, coming in third was Keith Freeman with 36 points.  Terry Redding is off for a few weeks and a bit of a break from golf and we wish him well, the rest of us will be back again on Friday.

North Hill, 19.02.16

Today there were 14 golfers at North Hill with 12 members playing in the stableford competition and two visitors.  Although it must be said that some have had a little too much golf and or celebrations after golf as one struggled to complete his round today and another only completed 9 holes.  Hopefully they will recover over the weekend and be back on Monday.  Some good scoring in hot conditions with Peter (Smiley) Haddon winning the day with 38 points, Christian Friis coming in second with 37 points and a tie for third with Ralph Hamilton and Dennis Beaudoin playing to par with 36 points. One of our visitors Steve Brown is heading back home but will be back next year and our American Visitor Joel says he enjoyed his game and will join us once again on Monday.

After yesterdays Away Game we had today only 16 Players including one Guest playing in a Stableford competition. Our guest Thomas König is actually quiet often in Thailand. When he returns he will join our group.

Scoring was on the warmer side as the temperature as well. In third place with 35 points was Frank Schwarz, tied for first place with 38 points were Steve Metcalf and Diane Mayo.

We will see you all back on Wednesday for a COMBINED 2 man team event which will count for the Handicaps and the PoY running.

Mae Moh, 18.02.16 (February Away Game)

We  had (25) members participating in a 2-man best ball competition at Mae Moh.  Most members arrived on time and we had (4) groups teeing off the number (1) tee box and (3) groups off the 10th tee box.  The starter requested that we start early as he delayed a 6-some from teeing off ahead of our groups.  We were all surprised on the excellent condition of the  course.   Most members agreed that both the greens and the fairways were as good or better than all the courses in the Chiang Mai area.

We did experience a minor problem in that the course temporally closed some holes while we were playing resulting in some members playing a specific hole and other members skipping the hole while it was closed. Subsequently, various groups completed their respective rounds playing different combination of holes. This snafu resulted in totaling the scores of only (15) holes that everyone played.  In the end it all worked out fine.

Based on the total scores of (15) holes the winning teams are as follows:

  • 1st place team  –   Peter Hadden and Soren Nielsen 37 stableford points
  • 2nd place ( We had a tie ) with both teams posting a score of 36 points
    • Team of Terry Redding and Kim Stogner
    • Team of Chris Kendall and Kenny Jones

In closing it was another great day of golf!

A shortfall in attendance today due probably to tomorrow’s Away game at Mae Moh,but we still achieved 13 players including2 guests.

The course is becoming dry but the greens were true and the weather ensured everyone had an enjoyable day.

Joint winners with 36 points were BARRY OCHITWA [ long overdue!] and NAM WILSON [ off the red tees.]

Members should note that as next Monday is a Holiday 5 groups have been reserved at NORTH HILL instead.

Mae Jo, 17.02.16

This Wednesday we had (16) members and (2) guests participating in our monthly ” Match Play Against the Course” As usual for this time of the year the play was on the slow side couple with long waits teeing off after making the turn.

On a good note it appears our winter is over as we all played under sunny skies and much warmer weather as compared to the previous (2) weeks.

Relative to the results Tom Berger took 2nd place honor tying the course with a (0) zero point total.  We had a tie for 1st place being shared by Michael (Kuzie) Kumich and Rob Rob Grootenhujiis with a (+1) point score. Also today both Frank Schwarz and Jeff Croswhaite had birdies on hole 18 (Captain Mike Pattavina will pay out at a later date).

Based on the lunch conversations numerous golfers did not play their best round today!  It can only get better – hopefully that is!

We look forward to seeing the members tomorrow at Mae Moh or this Friday at Maejo.

One day we’ll get this all straightened out. But in the meantime, 21 members and 4 guests came out to play in the above referenced comp.

And after an approximately 4.75 hour round per grouping the following winners came in:

Front nine- Howard Aspin with 19 points.

Back nine- Ralph Hamilton with 20 points

Overall- Rob Grootenhujiis with 35 points

Congratulations to all our winners and don’t forget NO PLAY next Monday-Thai Holiday.

North Hill, 12.02.16

Another perfect day in Paradise where 21 golfers turned out to enjoy a round of golf with 18 in the competition and a few qualifying for handicap and a visitor.  Roadworks on the back entry caused a bit of an upset to people arriving on time and one who forgot to submit card for the draw caused a bit of reorganizing of groups at the last minute (please remember to have fees paid and cards submitted by 8am) but all was eventually away with 3×3 balls and 3×4 balls after a random draw. Very little activity on the course apart from our groups. Usual complaints about the number of balls going to a watery grave with some considering putting in a bid for the ball retrieval contract.  It is not so much distance on this course but accuracy that counts.  Peter (Smiley) Haddon managed to play to his handicap and win the day with 36 points, closely followed in a tie for 2nd/3rd by Diane Mayo & Lennart Larsson  with 35 points. Food and Service in the clubhouse was excellent as usual.

20 golfers showed up at Mae Jo including 2 guests before Yung Beece came flying down the stairs at 6:57 a.m.! And then there were 21! So after some musical cards we still got under way off both sides at 7:10 ish.

#18 again went birdieless so the prize grows bigger still for next Wednesday’s match play comp.

We had a 3 way tie for 3rd with 36 points : Julian Wing, Michael Kuzmich and Andy Galwey.

Taking 2nd place alone and playing with his accountant was Keith Taylor with 38 points and playing his best round in quite a while was today’s winner, Steve Metcalf, carding 39 points.

Well done and congratulations to today’s winners.

Have a great week end and hope to see you next Wednesday.

Another glorious day with ideal weather conditions producing some respectable scores. We had a field of 20 [our highest to date] consisting of 17 CMSG golfers and 3 visitors. One of those, STEINIE from Iceland, had the highest score and won the day. High season appears to be winding down with fewer Koreans and holiday makers. Next Wednesday we have been allocated 20 spots but if a few more turn up it would probably be OK. Below are the Result according to the CMSG Handicap System.

24 members came out today on a very cool start to the round including Kim Anderson whom we welcome back from 3 months in Australia.

The birdie pool continues to grow or Friday’s stableford comp as no one again managed to make 3 on #18.

Today’s nassau comp saw our own handicapper, Harry Nieuwland, taking front nine honors with 18 points.

Continuing her winning ways since her return was Diane Mayo accumulating 20 points on the back nine and splitting the overall prize with 37 points was yours’ truly and Julian Wing.

Hope to see everyone on Friday and until then, Cheers!

On this “Super bowl Monday” we had (14) members and (2) guests teeing off on schedule.  Another perfect weather wise day for golf as the morning chill gave way to sunny and warm conditions. Play was somewhat on the slow side as it took the last group more than 4-1/2 hours to complete their respective round.  Today’s competition was Stableford with Rob Grootenhuijs taking 3rd and Mark Morris capturing 2nd place honors. Our big winner today was Lighting Lennart Larsson alone in 1st place with (42) points. Hats off to today’s winners!

In what must be considered the best weather of the year 24 golfers played today.  That is 18 members in the competition, one returning member re-establishing his handicap, welcome back to Michael Ackland.  Two new members qualifying for their handicaps with us, welcome to Robert and Diny Blohrmann. Also, there were three guests/visitors trying out the course.  Thank You to all for turning up early and allowing us to get away very quickly, the main competition group finished in regulation time with the new members and their visitors enjoying a more relaxing round at the back of the field. With the course being in good condition with the recently cored and sanded greens settling down and being relatively quiet, there were some excellent scores on the day with the winner Peter Brown coming in with 38 points and the runners-up Dennis Beaudoin, Shaun Stewart & Peter (Smiley) Haddon all coming in with 37 points. Sorry Dennis & Shaun, I was a bit slow taking the winners photo before you departed. Well done everybody and see you next week.

INDIVIDUAL NET STROKE PLAY-NASSAU

I agree with Garry’s sentiments above that today had to be perhaps the most pleasant one to date weather wise for 2016. 25 members and 1 guest came out to Mae Jo for the above referenced comp. but the big news of the day was Yung Beece’s 2nd ace in almost as many months when his ball found the hole from the tee on #2!!! That’s Yung pictured below Jomo’s certificate for the same feat! Congratulations, YUNG!

As far as the scheduled comp went the winners were as follows:

Winning the  front nine with a net 33 was Yung with the aid of that ace.

Tying for the first spot on the back also with 33 nets were Ric Cameron, Keith Taylor and Gerry Brimacombe.

Winning the overall was yours’ truly with a respectable net 70.

Some extra baht went into the birdie pool as well as no one made 3 on #18 today.

Come on out next Wednesday and try to take the prize in a stableford nassau comp.

Have a great week end everyone!

Cheers!

Inthanon, 03.02.16

On a glorious morning we had 17 players including 3 ladies. The course was in good condition and most people had reasonable scores. Our winner was Nam Wilson playing off the red tees, and she shot a 38 Nomads score. Chiang Mai Social Golfers please note, we have 16 spaces reserved for next Wednesday February 10th, so please come along and enjoy a round.

Winner Inthanon 3.2.16

STABLEFORD

21 members came out today and with a semi late start and the captain  mistakenly firing his caddie we still got around in just about 4 hours. Steve Bjorge made his 2:20 flight to BKK and we welcomed back Diane Mayo. Not bad for a Wednesday @ Mae Jo during high season.

No one birdied February’s designated hole #18 so that will carry over for Friday’s net Nassau comp.

Some good scoring and some not so good scoring was the order of the day as conditions could not have been better.

Finishing 3rd alone with 34 points was Frank Schwarz.

Taking 2nd place was yours’ truly with 37 points and no broken shafts and lapping the field upon her return from Aus was Diane Mayo with a blistering 41 points. Well done, Diane!

See you Friday for Individual Net Stroke Play Nassau.

Lanna, 01.02.16

On a cool morning 20 members and 2 guest came out to today’s Stroke Play (Net) event on Course 3 and 1. We were made aware today that our actual starting time is 08:20 am. So the first group with three Ladies Teed off at 08:23 am. It was a rather slow round due to the hold up on Hole 1 (our Hole 10) on Course # 1. Mark Morriss made the suggestion that in high season we could tee off on Course 1 first and than transition to Course 3. We will give it some due consideration for the next high season. It definitely is warming up quickly and the Umbrellas came out before we finished the front nine. The Scoring was again a bit on the cool side of the scale. In fourth alone with a net of 76 was Yukio Doi, than we had a three way tie (no count backs) for 1st place with a net 74 between Lennart Larsson, Allen Norris and Frank Schwarz. Congrats to todays Winners.

We said our good byes to Allen Norris who is returning home, he will be back in October. Safe travels and keep Golfing.

Next week we hope to see you all before 8 am for a Stableford competition.

North Hill, 29.01.16

On a day where the fog restricted the view to 100 yds or less 21 golfers teed off at North Hill.  With 3 birthday deals going there were plenty of happy people and it carried on for the after golf celebrations at the club house.  By the time the last group teed off the fog had cleared and it was a lovely day for golf.  The greens are recovering from their recent coring and sanding and should be in top form in coming weeks. Only one visitor/guest in the groups but he did in fact get the best score on the day with 40+ points, keep it up Gerry and enjoy your holiday. The winner in today’s stableford competition was the ever steady Bob Green playing to handicap with 36 points.  Runner-up was Peter (smiley) Haddon with 31 points, followed by a group of players on 30 points and many also rans on 29 points.

STUBBY’S STABLEFORD

30/1/2016

24 players came out for today’s non POY event and the clubs pulled ranged from 0 to 11 but in the end woul.dn’t you know it, Lightning struck!!

Yes, Lennart “Lightning” Larsen manufactured 46 points relying primarily on his trusty driver/putter to win what will probably be his last Stubby as he moves to North Hill next month .

Taking second place with 44 points was Curtis Nickel and alone in 3rd with 43 points was Yung Beece.

Congratulations to all of today’s winners.

See you all next Wednesday for February’s 1st comp where the birdie hole for the month will be #18.

Although we had 16 places reserved today only 11 players braved the cold, cloudy conditions.
The course was in good condition due to the recent heavy rains but the greens were slick.

Due to many golfers on the course in this High Season the rounds were slow[around 5 hours].
Joint winners were RALPH HAMILTON and KIM STOGER, both with scores of 33 under the NOMADS system.

Members are asked to note next Weds we have 16 places again commencing at 9am. First come first served.

STABLEFORD

28/1/15

Yes, for those of you whom actually read the weekly events calendar , the original comp was scheduled to be a 2 man team better ball stableford format. But lo and behold, Keith Taylor, who by his own admission avoids 2 man events came out in the cold and dreary weather. Consequently, the first annual Keith Taylor Memorial Stableford Comp. was born at 6:50 a.m. yesterday. And the best part is Keith is alive and well to participate!!!

16 hardy souls went off #1 and #10 and completed play in 3:45 hrs.

#17 survived any birdie efforts so the pot will double for Friday’s Stubby Stableford event.

We had a tie for 1st place with 35 points each by Andy Galwey and Craig Morriss.

Finishing a close second alone with 34 points was Advisor Emeritus, Frank Schwarz.

Stay warm and dry and see you all Friday!

Cheers!

Lanna, 25.01.16

On a very wet and COLD morning 14 hardy Lanna golfers headed out on the course for some Stableford Competition. Some of the golfers including myself didn’t prove so hardy and gave it up after nine holes some even before completing nine because it was just to wet and COLD. Out of the 14 that started only 6 golfers played all 18 holes and they even wondered why they did. It most have been for the love of the game or they just like playing in COLD wet condition. Our hats off to those golfers.
With the COLD and wet condition came low scores as will. Allen Norris who usually comes in around the top came in third with just 24 points. Second place was taken by Julian Wing with 27 points. First place went to Gary Burke with a high of just 28 points. Congratulation to our winners for hanging in there under such bad conditions and to the other three that made it around too. Next week it’s stroke play on the 3-1 courses, lets hope the conditions are a lot better.

North Hill, 22.01.16

Today at North Hill there were 12 members and 4 visitors/guests playing in a stableford event. A beautiful day on a relatively empty course in fine condition but with some greens recently cored and some sanded it made for an interesting round. There were many fronting up after their round at Royal yesterday who felt that two days in a row was a bit beyond them. The winner on the day with 41 pts having just recently been awarded her cmsg handicap was Nachaya Suwannakat. In second place merely from the fact that he didn’t lose a ball in the water for once was Garry Walker with 39 pts. In third place having played better than his handicap was Peter (Smiley) Haddon. Also Nam Wilson did well submitting her third card for handicap with a gross 102. Welcome also to Robert & Diny Lohrman a couple of locals trying us out for the first time. Hope to see you all again next Friday.

Mae Jo, 22.01.16

A much warmer morning at Mae Jo could only draw 12 members to play due to the game yesterday at Royal. However those 12 made the most out of it. In 3rd place with 38 points was Silvan Schwarz, in 2nd place with 39 points (76 Gross) was Adam Jackson who also won the Birdie Hole # 17 and the Winner with 44 points (73 Gross) was Frank Schwarz.
Adam will leave Thailand on Saturday and has no date for his return yet. We all wish Adam save travels and hope to see him again soon.
A warm Welcome to our new member Jeff Dwyer from Australia.

Matchplay against the course (Adam: with handicap registration !!!!! )

*Well, there you have it. Our esteemed handicapper has voiced and with below visual aid made his final opinion clear. No doubt about it whatsoever!*

17 members, 2 guests and 2 new members came out for the 1st match play  vs. par comp. to be handicapped post AGM. Let Freedom Ring!!!

It was a beautiful morning as we went off both #1 and #10 as usual in high season and we got around in just over 4.25 hours.

No birdies on #17. Pot grows for Friday’s Stableford Comp.

Posting -1’s vs. Old Man Par and tying for 3rd place were Frank Schwarz and Michael Kuzmich.

Coming in at even and placing 2nd was Dennis Beaudin and bringing the Old Man to his knees was Curtis Nickel at +4 to claim today’s top prize.

See most of you tomorrow for the year’s biggest scramble, The International, being held at Royal Chiangmai.

Till then, Cheers!

  • Winner on the first Nine with 20 points was Gary Lyon.
  • Winner on the second Nine was Allan Norris with 19 points.

North Hill, 15.01.16

The first official outing for CMSG’s at North Hill was attended by 15 members, 1 new member and 3 visitors. A little confusion at the start with some first timers and a birthday deal group in the draw but all was sorted and we tee’d off on time. Only one member doing better than handicap today and for the rest of us many balls went to a watery grave. In a stableford event the winner was Dennis Beaudoin and the runners up were Lennart Larsson, celebrating his birthday deal and getting us all a 15 per cent discount on our food bills, and last but certainly not least, was ever reliable Ralph Hamilton. Welcome also to newest member Nachaya Suwannakat. Happy Golfing everyone and hope to see you again next Friday.

Mae Jo, 15.01.16

STABLEFORD

26 members and 2 guests came out to Mae Jo for the 1st event along with the introduction of North Hill to our playing rotation under the newly elected CMSG Committee.

It was quite a busy day at Mae Jo and consequently play took almost 4.5 hours but such are the ways of high season golf here in the Kingdom.

No one birdied #17 again so that pot grows for next Wednesday’s match play vs. par comp.( Remember it is now a handicap event!)

Scoring overall was average perhaps due to pace of play but 3 golfers came in around their quota and they were:

Julian Wing taking 3rd place with 35 points,

Silvan Schwarz finishing 2nd with an even 36 points,

And winning today’s comp with 37 points and by his own account the 1st time in weeks without a wipe was Michael Kuzmich.

Enjoy your week end and remember  Lanna is still in the rota on Mondays!!!

Cheers!

Stableford-Nassau

27 members came out to Mae Jo for the Pre-AGM stableford nassau. So hope to see that level of participation tomorrow at Gymkanna for the AGM.

#17 survived today with no birdies as the tee was back another 12 yards. Pot doubles for Fridays’s satbleford comp.

There was a lot of good nine hole scoring today but only one superior overall score.

Tying for honors on the back nine with 20 points were Curtis Nickel, Silvan Schwarz and Craig Morriss.

Picking the correct nine to finish alone with 19 points was your’s truly.

And today’s winner after being burned once or twice in the past in this format was our own, Richard Brown with 39 points.

We will be saying goodbye to Brownie next month as he returns to Lao so hearty congrats on a fine performance.

We also welcome back Steve Metcalf who will be with us again for the next several months.

SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW @ 6:00 P.M. @ GYMKANNA!!!

Lanna, 12.01.16

Another weather perfect day for golf at Lanna cool to start with and warming up just a little as the morning past. We welcomed a new member to Lanna and to the CMSG Inge Persson who find out about us from the Wednesday Inthanon group.  Stableford was the competition of the day and scoring was all that bad. Allen Norris who is usually on top came in third for a change with 31 points. Stuart Duncan from Mai Jo came in second with 34 points.  Barry Ochitwa was the golfer of the day taking first with 37 points. Congratulation to our winners.

I most now bid fair well since this will be my last Match Report. Let me say I have really enjoyed being Captain of Lanna for the past two years. You Lanna golfers are the best. You know how to enjoy the game of golf and how to have fun after the round is over. Don’t worry I’ll still be around on Mondays to play golf and left a class or two after the game.

INDIVIDUAL NET STROKE PLAY

It only took him 54 years of playing this game we love ( and hate) but venerable Jomo (formerly Saemus) MacDermott was rewarded for his love of the game with a HOLE IN ONE on #2 at Mae Jo today. All of us again offer our congratulations to you, sir. (Pictured below with scorecard and Mae Jo certificate which will hang at the caddie shack).

18 other members came out for today’s stroke play comp and we had a tie for 2nd place with net 75’s by Tom Rowand and Harry Nieuwland.

There was also a tie for 1st with net 74’s by Julian Wing and the estimable Iain Craig.

#17 fell today with Nigel Stubbs making a 2 there before he takes off for Hua Hin next week but it wasn’t an ace. Nigel.

Congrats to ALL of today’s winners!!

Have a great week end and hope to see everyone next Wednesday.

STABLEFORD

4.5 hours!! Get used to it for a little while longer, boys & girls.

22 players came out today and yes it was on the slow side on both nines.

January’s birdie hole (#17) held up on its’ 1st day under the gun so that prize continues to grow for Friday’s individual net stroke play.

Scoring was mediocre. Perhaps pace of play had a part.

Tying for 2nd place was Yung Beece and Michael Kuzmich with 35 points.

And only hitting a handful of greens by his own admission but scrambling well enough to earn 36 points was Nigel Stubbs taking 1st in the comp.

Not much more to say about the new year’s 1st round @ Mae Jo except that the old Foghat song ” Slow Ride” may be our anthem for the next 2 months!

We’ll see.

Cheers!

Lanna, 04.01.16

Happy New Years from Lanna hope everyone had a safe and good New Year.

As for Lanna the numbers were small once more and I’m sure it was because it was stroke competition and that meant the first nine was on that race track course that a lot of people just can’t handle. But any way we all had fun until we got to the back nine way play became very slow due to those seasonal golfers that keep showing up at this time of year but we all made it in finally in about 5 hours. Scoring was good for some and not so good for others but that the way golf goes. Gary Burke shot a gross 94 that netted him a 76 to take third. Robbo shot a 96 gross that netted him a 72 to take second but wasn’t in the competition so Gary Lyon got the money for second place. Gary shot a 109 gross that netted him a 75. The best round of the day was shot by Allen Norris with a gross of 88 that netted him a nice 70 to take first place. Congratulation to our winners.

By the way the green fees at Lanna are still 850 THB. It’s anyone guest to way it might change.
