Match Reports June 2016

Inthanon, 29.06.16

9 golfers showed up today which was a good turnout considering the weather leaving chiangmai did not look promising. However after a few holes it turned out to be one of the best days for golf this summer. After many months it was nice to see Jay Jay and Garry Walker joining us.

They were the players to beat taking 1st and 2nd place.

Mae Jo, 29.06.16

A lot of things happened today. First, after a lot of rain all night and a dry morning it started again to rain just 15 minutes before our first Tee Off, we were told by the starter that by 8 am it would stop. Much to our surprise it stopped only at 08:15. We have to have serious talk to the starter on Friday. Anyway, all this did not deter a total of 25 players to come out today for a Stableford competition. And it turned out to be a special one.

With 37 points in third place Ken Nalder with a 3rd round at 75 Gross, in 2nd place Adam Jackson with a 38 points and a 76 Gross.

All of this was no match for todays Winner with 43 points and an incredible Gross 69 – Nigel Stubbs. Well done Nigel and Congrats to all todays Winners.

Nigel’s round translates into the lowest round recorded for the CMSG. A truly special day for Nigel and we wish for him to keep this form.

Lanna, 27.06.16

Another good turn out at Lanna this Monday as (19) members all arriving on time to tee-off course #1 for a stableford competition. Today the weather was slightly overcast most of the day, and even with the high humidity, was a weather wise ideal day for a round of golf. Prior to reporting the scores there appeared to be more interest in a couple of caddies (#206 and 299 for example) than having a decent playing round of golf. It just goes to show most of our members are never too old to appreciate attractive young people.

Today we had a tie for 1st place with (38) points each being shared by Barry Ochitwa and Terry Redding.  It appears that from his first place score Terry Redding did maintain more focus on his golf game than his caddy  (at times that is!) Coming in 2nd place today was Lennart Larrson posting a respectable score of (36) points.  Last but not least, we had a tie for 3rd place with (35) points being shared by Keith Freeman and Barry Ralston.

Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!

Next Monday ( July 4th) Mr. Keith Freeman starts his relm as the new Lanna Captain.

North Hill, 24.06.16

Once again we just fell short of the required number of golfers for the player of the year with 11 members and one ex member and one prospective new member in the Mix for today and with ‘H’ visiting for drinks after the game on one of his regular breaks from working for a living in Oz which he tells us is bloody wet and cold at the moment.

As is normal these days it was hot and humid out there but the course is still in lovely condition with just a few of the greens being cored and sanded. The winner in a stableford competition today was Brian Heuston with 39 points and tied for second place was Camilla Dwyer and Keith Freeman with 35 points. We might also mention that Barry Ochitwa and Ralph Hamilton made a good showing and tied for third place with 34 points.  Well played one and all.

STABLEFORD

26/6/16

Hello again! Now we are closer to my usual modus oporandi. Only Sunday afternoon and Friday’s report is in the books.

Big turnout at Mae Jo this Friday. 29 members and 4 guests, Wayne, Ian, Eric and Roger (all Kuzie sponsored ) came out.

2 items- welcome back Jomo McDermott who was away in Hong Kong for the Thai hot season and bon voyage (again!!) to our own handicapper, Prince Harry of Angeles City.

#17 was conquered by Jeff Crosthwaite and thanks to Jack Cooper can now bring his own sticky paper to the Caddy Shack (see 17/6/16/report).

There was some pretty good overall scoring today ( Hey, I even had 18 points).

Tying for 4th place with 37 points were Steve Borge and Ken Nalder.

Taking 2nd alone was the host of Thailand, Kuzie, with 38 points!

And after a 2 week absence from Mae Jo, Barry Ralson posted 40 points to taketoday’s comp.

Well done, All. See you next Wednesday if my shrink gets me some good meds!!

Inthanon, 22.06.16t

The course is now in excellent condition and as green as Ireland.Today 12 players attended ,including two guests who took first and second. Both have played before with us and Dave Beck won with Steve Jepson a close second. They shared the Smiley Haddon Fund 3 too.

Mae Jo, 22.06.16

STABLEFORD NASSAU

26/6/16

Burnout Mike here again ( see 15/6/16 report). 21 members came out for the above referenced comp and since this post is being written posthumously (pardon the pun), it appears that Brian Heuston and his wife Camilla Dwyer are on a roll (see North Hill report 24/6).

Taking the front nine with 20 points apiece were Jack Kuzina and Silvan Schwarz.

Winning the back comfortably with 23 points was Camilla and posting his 1st of what may be many wins was Brian with 41 points.

No birdies on #17 and since Jack Cooper left the prize in the pool, some lucky golfer has a shot at 700 big ones. I wonder who it will be?

Burnout OUT!

Lanna, 20.06.16

Stableford Nassau

This Monday we had (18) members showing up at Lanna for a Stableford Nassau competition on course 1 and 2.We teed of on time (8:20 AM) under cloudy skies and extremely hot and humid conditions.  As the round progressed the clouds gave way to sun-shine for most of the back nine holes making the conditions appear to be somewhat hotter.

With the first group completing their respective round in (4) hours all the remaining groups also completed thier rounds in 4 hours +/- 10 minutes

Relative to the results Gary Walker was the overall winner posting a blistering round of (44) points.   It is of everyone’s position that the new Gary look ( short hair and almost beardless ) resulted in lightening his load and subsequently having great results.   Winning the front nine with (20) points was Keith Freeman and Ashley posting a fantastic back nine of (21) points.

Hats off to today’s winners and we look forward to seeing everyone back at Lanna next Monday.

North Hill, 17.06.16

We appeared to be the only ones on the course today for a stableford competition in hot and humid conditions.  Only 9 in the competition, no doubt due to the big event yesterday at Royal and congratulations to all the CMSG team on their win.  As soon as we get sufficient numbers turning out we will have a different event such as stableford nassau, hopefully in the near future.  Maybe even a stroke event as requested by Ashley. The manager has taken our advice regarding the future printing of score cards. Todays event was won by Peter (Smiley) Haddon and Christian Friis both having 33 points and Shaun Stewart came in next with 31 points.  Well done guys.  Brian and Camilla both completed their cards for handicap today and we look forward to seeing them in the winners circle in coming weeks.  The captain fell down on the job and forgot to take a photo so have posted an old one.

Mae Jo, 17.06.16

Today’s format was been announced as a special Stableford but captain Mike called handicapper Harry to ask to cover for him because he was “not feeling well”???

So we had 22 players with 2 guest and we welcomed back John Laidley who paid his dues for 2016 and put his 100 Baht in after I put in his score. He’s a real nice guy!

Tied for third place were Frank and Lennart with 35 points, second Steve coming in with 38 points and today’s winner was Mister Kuzie with 39 points. Well done guys and see you next week.

During lunch Jeff Crostwhaite felt disturbed by the flies around his food and after 45 minutes applying his Thai language he was able to get some “sticky paper” which was supposed to solve his fly problem. However it was clear that the flies did prefer his food over the “sticky paper”. He tried some modifications and additional “treats” to entice the flies but the result was rather disappointing (see photo below}

Inthanon, 15.06.16

Great day today with the weather and the course condition. We’ve never seen the course greener although the speed of the greens was not consistent.

12 players today including 2 guests and almost everybody played to their regular standard except RALPH HAMILTON who easily beat everyone including Ashley Kim, despite Ashley having 9 pars!

Both had their Nomads handicaps cut but there was no need for that abuse Ashley,I was only doing my job!

STABLEFORD,

26/6/16

If you are reading this report then my apologies to you for the wait. Just been suffering from a continuing bout of golf burn out.

There was a fairly strong turn out of 16 members and 2 guests, Peter and Kevin, for the day before the Chiang Mai Cup including a couple of turn coat Sanuk Sabai members.

We also welcomed a new member today. George Appleton joined our ranks and posted his first handicap scorecard.

No birdie on #17 this day.

Finishing 3rd alone was one of the turncoats, Graham Adams with 36 points.

Placing 2nd with 37 points was the always loyal, Yung Beece.

And thankfully a founding father of CMSG took 1st prize with a strong 38 stableford  points, Ric Cameron.

Cheers!

Lanna, 13.06.16

Todays format was Stableford and a total of 18 members turned up. We welcome at Lanna Brian and Camilla who joined last week at North Hill.

We had 75% Cloud Cover during the morning with a few drops towards the end of the round. What made todays round even better was a 3 to 8 knots wind which helped the temperature to stay below 30 Celsius. Sadly to say that the Scores stayed on the cooler side as well.

a 2 way tie for third place with 33 points was Garry Walker and Lennart Larsson, a three way tie for second place with 34 points were Julian Wing, Ashley Kim-Sing and Allan Gariano. The lone Winner with 35 points was Keith Freeman who appears to be in the picture at every venue.

Well done and congratulation to all Winners today. See you all next Monday for a Stableford Nassau.

North Hill, 10.06.16

There were 11 members and one guest at North Hill today. Cloudy skies made temperatures more acceptable to the majority and with the back nine holes being renumbered and some indexes changed it was going to be an interesting round. Some greens were still showing signs of the recent coring and sanding as well. Highlight of the day was when two members of the same group birdied the 12th par 5 index 4 but there were still some grumbles from a few who lost 6/7 balls. Anyway, all that aside, the winner on the day was Shaun Stewart with 37pts followed by Keith Freeman with 32pts and Christian Friis with 31pts. Verdict of the majority in attendance was that the renumbered holes are an improvement to the course.

With heavy overcast and eventually a down pour lasting about 15 minutes during our todays Stableford Competition brave 19 Members battled for the fasted way back into the dry 19th office.

Jeff Crostwhaite invented a new way to cool his Chicken Wings so he can eat faster.

IMG_2466 copy

As per todays scoring, we had a 3 way tie for 3rd place with 34 points between Nigel Stubbs, Jeff Crostwhaite and Diane Mayo (welcome back Diane), in second place alone was Yung Beece with 35 points and todays Winner was Frank Schwarz with 37 points.

Congratulation to todays Winners.

Next week we will be playing on Wednesday a “New Game” introduced by our Captain Mike who will be back well rested and ready to go.

Everyone, have a great weekend.

Mae Jo, 08.06.16

23 players joined today’s Stroke-play event, 22 members and Jomo’s guest. From the 22 members, 21 submitted their scorecard. The weather was pretty nice with a mostly covered sky. Pace of play was very good and we gathered at the Caddy shack for a drink.

Tied for second with a 72 net came Silvan Schwarz and Julian Wing, who collected once again points for the PoY standing. First on his own came the Flying Dutchman Rob Grootenhuijs shooting a beautiful 68 net. Congratulations to the winners and see you all Friday for another Stableford round of Golf.

Lanna, 06.06.16

13 members joined todays Strokeplay event on Course 3 and 1. The temperature was certainly nice but the humidity was quiet high. Nevertheless the Golf Course was literally empty and none of our groups were held up and we all finished well under 4 hours.

Due to an Handicap mistake (Captains fault) we have one member in the picture which did not come in under the first 3.

Tied for 3rd place with a Net of 77 was Peter Brown, in 2nd with a net 76 was Steven Bjorge and the Winner of todays competition was with a net 72 Garry Walker.

Congratulation to all Winners.

Net week we will be back with a Stableford competition on Course 1 and 2

North Hill, 03.06.16

There were 11 members, one ex member and one guest lined up for a start in very humid conditions. We welcome two new members Camilla Dwyer & Brian Heuston to the CMSG club and to the North Hill membership who are in the process of submitting the required cards for handicap.  A change of course layout for next week, they will be moving the 10th tee back to its original position (replacing existing tee 14) making it less of a walk from hole 9. Have to wait and see if they actually change the score cards. Also they have begun to core and sand the greens mostly after our round so should be reasonable by next week.

Anyway the winners today in third place was Graham Adams with 31 pts, Keith Freeman coming in second with 34 points even though he lost multiple balls and countered with the occasional birdie, but the overall winner and the only one playing better than handicap was Laurence Nahlik with 37 pts.

Mae Jo, 03.06.16

STABLEFORD

22 members, one guest and another new member posting his 3rd score with CMSG came out to Mae Jo to make it an even 6 four balls going off #1 and #10 under overcast skies and a comfortable 27 degrees.

#17 held on for the restart so the prize doubles for next Wednesday’s comp.

A record of sorts was probably accomplished today as yours’ truly posted a legitimate 9 point card. Society historians have been enlisted and we will confirm this record at a later date. Oh!!! Happy Days!!!

But on a more positive note, Adam Jackson took 4th place alone with 34 points. Stuart Duncan, perhaps affected by my play, still managed 35 points to take 3rd place.

And today’s co champions were Nigel Stubbs and Jack Cooper who thankfully started on the opposite nine and did not have to witness any of my carnage to record 36 points apiece for top honors.

Off to Nakhon Thai next week so I leave you in the more capable hands of Harry and Frank. See you on the 15th if I can stay away from sharp objects!!

Cheers!

P.S. Please check the website for the Chiang Mai Cup and sign up to play. We need at least 7 more to participate. THANKS!!

Inthanon, 01.06.16

Today was cooler than recent weeks resulting in 8 players. If the cooler weather continues I’m sure our numbers will increase.

The course was twice as green as recent weeks andif the maintenance crew learn to water at night this course will be one of the best in Chiang Mai.

7 members played plus one guest and the winner was Gary Cooke.

Well done Gaz.

Mae Jo, 01.06.16

STABLEFORD NASSAU

2/6/16

Good evening. 20 members and one special guest, Tom Prouty, came out yesterday to Mae Jo under partly cloudy skies for the day’s competition.

Lift, clean and place was declared as the recent welcome rain has finally semi saturated  the course. Thank goodness!

#17 did not last too long as the month’s birdie hole as Andy Galwey made a 2 to take the modest prize. Pot restarts tomorrow and #17 will remain designated hole a while longer.

Andy and Adam Jackson took front nine honors with 20 points apiece and a trio (Steve Borge, Yung Beece & Julian Wing) tied for back nine honors with 18 points.

And picking the wrong day to take the overall prize with so many also-rans to award was Frank Schwarz with a very solid 38 points.

Congratulations to all of the day’s winners.

Cheers!

20160601_124829

Adam, Kim Yung B, Frank, Andy, Julian

Julian hit is ball in the water-hazard on Hole no.2 but he cleared the hazard and the ball rolled back in. Then he tried to hit his ball from the mud area in the hazard but failed and the ball went in further into the hazard. In this case he could have gone back to the spot where he originally played from, hitting his 4th shot or drop a ball within two club length of the spot (reference point) where the ball last crossed the lateral water-hazard also hitting is 4th shot. This reference point never goes away until your ball actually leaves the water hazard again as a result of a stroke. He made a 5 for 1 point!
