Mae Jo, 31.08.16

This Wednesday we had (24) members all arriving on time to compete in a straight stableford competition. We all teed off on schedule under clear skies that continued throughout most of the round. At times it seemed extremely hot and humid but we had the occasional light breezes and cloudy skies making it more bearable.

The groups starting off the back nine holes finished their respective rounds approximately 15-20 minutes earlier than those off the front nine.

Relative to the results Nigel Stubbs was in the money again by taking 3rd place honors with (35) points. Alone in 2nd place with (36) points was Graham Adams.  Finishing in 1st place with a highly respectable score of (40) points was Adam Jackson. Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!

No one birdied the 18 hole so the pot grows. Starting in September the new birdie hole will be the par 3 hole # 7 hopefully slightly leveling the field by giving the higher handicappers more of a chance to claim the current pool.

In closing we look forward to seeing everyone this coming Friday.

Lanna, 29.08.16

Lanna today was very damp after all the rain on Sunday, and scoring was a little on the low side for the 17 CMSG members who decided to play. The balls didn’t run at all and the greens were tough so it was going to be hard to break through 30 points.

Anyway, we had 4 winners: Peter Brown was awarded 3rd place with 29 points, Soren Nielson scored 30 points to come second, but the joint winners of the day were Garry Walker and Lawrence Nahlik with 32 points each.

See you all next week for Stroke play around courses 3 and 1.

North Hill, 26.08.16

Ten hardy souls turned out today for the stableford competition, mind you there were a few extras who had slept in and turned up too late, good on you Soren.  Anyway an enjoyable round had by all three groups on a tremendous course. (Surprise, surprise, I only put two balls in the water today).

After the game it was a welcome surprise to see a group of ex regulars drinking and eating up a storm in the clubhouse in the form of Les Harvey recovering form some foul lurgy or other, Norm Best and Scott Lumsden and family recently trying to reestablish themselves into the Chiangmai community and Haydn Patterson back from his workaholic ways.

The winner today coming in with 43 points (as he did at Lanna on Monday) was Lennart Larsson (no doubt some serious handicap adjustments), followed by our regular prize winner Peter (Smiley) Haddon with 39 Points and Camilla Dwyer with 37 well earned points coming in third place.  All the rest were 32 points or better and that means the course is certainly playable and enjoyable by the majority of our club members.

Food, Drinks & hospitality were all enjoyed in the club house after the game in support of a wonderful club and we hope to see many more of you back again next week. This week we welcomed back Ralph Hamilton from his trip to Canada and congratulate Leon on his marvellous result today after voluntarily dropping ten shots from his handicap, lovely to find some honest learner golfers in the group.

Mae Jo, 26.08.16

Stableford

Today we had (22) members competing in a Stableford competition at Maejo.  The previous evening heavy rains ended a few hour prior to our scheduled tee-off time subsequently applying the ‘lift, clean, & place” rule.  We all teed off on schedule under cloudy skies coupled with a few light breezes making it another ideal day to be on the links!

We also were pleased to have both our Lanna Captain (Keith Freeman) and our Inthanon Captain (Terry Redding) joining us today.

Relative to the results Nigel Stubbs scoring (34) points took 3rd place honors.  We had a two-way tie for 2nd place being shared by Diane Mayo and Gary Cooke both posting a score of (35) points.  Alone in 1st place was Ric Cameron  (one of the founding fathers of the CMSG) posting a highly respectable score of (41) Stableford points.  Hats off to all of today’s winners!

Also, no one claimed the 18th birdie hole today so the pot grows another 100 baht.

For reference and rule information: Jeff Crosthwaite tee-shot on the 6th hole landed just over the fence at the right side inside the water hazard. There is a sign that you are not allowed to go over the fence, which he ignored or did not notice. That means that he played from the wrong place according to rule 20-7c.  He should have played on with the same ball giving himself a 2-shot penalty. Only when the committee decides that a player gains significant advantage from playing from the wrong place, he must then play a second ball ( from the tee with one stroke penalty )  He was then advised wrongly by his marker to drop a ball on the drop-zone with a one stroke penalty. The committee understands that this is a difficult call and not a everyday  day situation and subsequently will not inflict any penalty in this time. Please keep this in mind for your next round as you may be penalized.

In closing, please be advised the Mike Pattavina is taking a sabbatical from golf and has resigned as the Maejo Captain.  All the members, in unison, stated that they will miss Mike and all look forward to his quick  return to playing golf.  Also, we would like to extend our grateful thanks to Mike in his role as the Maejo captain over the past (20) months.  Again, we look forward to playing with him in the very near future.  Thanks again Mike!

Inthanon, 24.08.16

Each week we’re getting a few more players as the weather improves.

Today we had 13 players (12 CMSG members plus 1 guest). Weather conditions were ideal but the very slick greens proved difficult for most. Steve, our guest, held his game together to win with 35 points so we cut the bugger’s handicap to see if that would stop him winning 3 on a trot. Prachat [aka Pung ] came in second again with 33 points.

All in all a very pleasent day.

Mae Jo, 24.08.16

STUBBY’S STABLEFORD

22 members and 1 guest came out to Mae Jo today for what may be the final Stubby’s competition. After squaring away the details for the day’s format we went off both tees at 7:50 and all golfers finished in just under 4 hours under partly cloudy skies for the majority of the round.

Some of you may have forgotten what Mae Jo looked like as the men’s & ladies Thai Pro tours as well as a Royal birthday had us playing substitute venues the last few weeks.

There were, however, 3 golfers who managed to get around successfully with less than a full contingent of clubs in their bags.

Placing 3rd and playing with 5 clubs was Craig Morriss with 43 points.

Taking 2nd place with 6 clubs was Iian Craig with 44 points.

And wouldn’t you know it, shooting 76 off the stick with 5 clubs in the bag, Nigel Stubbs took the day’s prize in his namesake format with 46 points.

Well done and congrats to today’s winners. And oh, by the way, #18 is the Mae Jo birdie hole and it went unclaimed again. Big prize is now available for Friday’s stableford comp.

Mike P. signing off!

Lanna, 22.08.16

Another glorious Monday at Lanna saw 22 members arrive ready for the usual trudge around the course. We followed a meandering 4-ball initially which turned into a 6-ball by the 10th hole, however miraculously they never actually held us up and most groups had 4-hour rounds.

Today was a Stableford Nassau competition which saw new-comer Dave Beck receive a prize for scoring 19 on the front 9, and Soren Nielson receive an equal amount for scoring 20 on the back 9. Overall winner was that regular winner of late – Lennart Larsson with a massive 43 points. Your Handicap Index is down 3.5 Lennart – about time!

Sometimes the random draw can place people in the last groups many times running (happened to me many times) so your Captain has decided to sometimes vary the grouping by handicaps, reverse handicaps, height, weight etc. Next week I shall group in the order of card submission – first come first served.

North Hill, 19.08.16

Overcast skies greeted the 20 members at North Hill today but during the stableford round there was only a light shower that disappeared before you could get an umbrella up. A little surprised there were so many fronting up after the round at Gassan yesterday but obviously you can’t keep good golfers from enjoying a round on a lovely course, they back up time and again. The 17th was chosen for the birdie hole and once again no-one was up to the challenge, although there were plenty of birdies throughout the round. The winners today were Frank Schwarz with 38 points, Nigel Stubbs with 37 points and Roscoe Butler with 36 points. Well done All.

Gassan Khuntan, 18.08.16

On a beautiful morning (40) members all arrived on time for our scheduled 9:00 am tee-off for our August 2016 away match at Gassan Khuntan.  Today the weather was somewhat on the warm side as most of our round was played under sunny skies with minimal cloud cover until the final couple of holes.

Prior to announcing today’s winners I would like to apologize to the members within hearing range of my tirade toward a member who announced he did not want to play with a certain individual and also he did not think it was fair for him to be playing in the last group. As a suggestion to future members who do not agree with their assigned grouping or playing partners all I can suggest is that you quietly dismiss yourself by leaving the course and hopefully enjoy the rest of the day at your home.

Getting back to the golf the course was in excellent conditions with most members stating it was a fantastic course with magnificent panoramic views but also extremely difficult.

After a little confusion on part of the president who misplaced a few cards that he was sitting on we finally were able to announce the event winners!

5th Place:  We had a (3) way tie for fifth place being shared by Adam Jackson, Kenny Jones, and Silvan Schwarz each with 32 stableford points.

4th Place:  Another  (3) way tie for 4th place with 33 points being shared by Robert Green, Shaun Stewart, and Peter Haddon.

Stand alone winners:

Hats off to all of today’s winners and a thank you to all our members who turned out today!

Also, as announced our next away match the 2nd annual Lanna / Maejo Challenge  on September 15, 2016 at Doi Inthanon. This year we are asking all our members to form their own 2-man team and submit the names to any of the club captains.

Inthanon, 17.08.16

With rain forecast  and golf again tomorrow at Khuntan attendance was low today, just 4 of us!

The rain never arrived and the weather was in fact nearly perfect. Millionaire’s golf. We only saw one other group all day.

Nobody set the world alight and the winner was a non member who wishes to remain anonymous.

Second place was yours truly with 30 points. No sandbaggers here!

Royal Chiang Mai, 17.08.16

Todays Stableford Nassau saw 21 members playing at the Royal Chiang Mai Golf Course. The Course was in great shape and everyone enjoyed the venue. Todays Winners, on the front was Dennis Byrne with 20 points and the back was won with 22 points by Rob Grootenhuijs and with 39 points the overall Winner was Robert Green.

Lanna, 15.08.16

Not much of a turnout today for Monday’s Lanna. I expect that plenty of people gave it a miss because they have a full schedule this week with the monthly away game, but also that a few thought that it might rain.

And it did rain, but not enough to spoil the event too much. There were only 10 players and scoring wasn’t excessive.

In third place was Leon Smiler (who likes to play on every other fairway other than the one we are supposed to be playing on) with 30 points. Second place went to Keith Freeman with 31 points, but the overall winner was Barry Ralston with 34 points. Captain Keith was too concerned about trying to confirm the “Annual” arrangements that he forgot to take a winner’s photo.

North Hill, 12.08.16

A large group today at North Hill with 10 groups or 37 members and two visitors making a total of 39 in today’s stableford round. The majority were on time with cards handed in to the captain by 8am. With two birthday deal groups in the line up (Barry & Garry) and a few with special requests relating to early departure requirements etc., slowed the sorting of groups but we did get away in time if not necessarily in order, but that is as it should be in a happy social and friendly group. We were a bit unfortunate that the club had bookings for 100 today and therefore we could not go off both front and back tees and for that North Hill and the club apologize for those who were at the tail end of the groupings. The flow of play was not too bad considering the numbers and the fact that it was the Queens Birthday holiday (God Bless Her) and the course marshal did ask if everything was satisfactory. Before we get to the results it should be mentioned that nobody managed to win the birdie hole #17 but that Diane Mayo Eagled the 8th hole which was apparently not lucky but a pretty exceptional shot according to her playing partners, well done. The results on the day show that this is not a hard course, tricky but not impossible, before we get to the winners it should be said that there were 5 people tied for 4th place with 35 points, two tied for third place with 37 points Adam Jackson & Shaun Stewart, Leon Smiler again in the prize money in second place and lowering his handicap with 38 points, but the overall winner showing off his Ferrari type competitiveness with an amazing 43 points was Gary Cooke.  Well done All and hope to see you back again in the near future.  Drinks and food were amazing at the Mix restaurant and many lingered on and drank perhaps more than they should have.  It was good to see Shannon back in country and Sarinee out to join us, also Roscoe and Tayakorn before their departure for the USA, farewell to David R until next time, also good to see Tom B back in country.

Mae Jo, 10.08.16

Today we had a total of 21 players competing in a Net Stroke under a cloudy sky until the 14th hole when the Sun made its appearance. Scoring was somewhat on the higher side.

4 Players tied for 2nd with a net 75 were, Diane Mayo, Nigel Stubbs, Julian Wing and Frank Schwarz. Alone in first place with a net 74 was Yung Beece.

Please remember that we play on Friday in North Hill again and next Wednesday at Royal Chiang Mai, Thursday at Gassan Khuntan and next Friday again at North Hill.

Lanna, 08.08.16

There were 20 players at Lanna this Monday including a couple of guests. Conditions were pretty good apart from a small shower, but scoring was a little on the low side for some unknown reason. After a small scoring discrepancy was resolved (please try to check stroke scores as well as Stableford scores with your markers before signing cards) we had a first place winner and a tie for second place. So, tied for second place were Lawrence Nahlik and Barry Ochitwa with 32 points each, but the outstanding effort of the day went to JJ Walker with a staggering 40 points. Garry Walker does not want his score widely known or discussed!

North Hill, 05.08.16

The captain must admit to getting a little flustered with such a large turnout today thinking there were more groups than there actually were and for that I must apologise.  It turned out that there were actually 9 groups, one three ball of ladies & 8 four balls of men making a total of 35 golfers for the stableford round. Only one managed to sneak through without putting into the kitty but it was still a nice prize pool.  We even managed to get away 10 minutes early for our tee-off with 6 groups going off the first and three off the 10th with late approval from the starter.  There was a birdie hole prize announced and it was hole 13 but no one managed to collect, so if it survives the next round at Maejo then it may be on again next week, but perhaps a different hole.  Yes, you all may have to suffer another round at this marvelous course next week so don’t forget to stock up on golf balls.  As the captain was in the last group back to the club house it was with a huge sigh of relief to see that Frank had his computer and was inputting all the scores and for that I thank you sincerely for that Frank. The overall results were very close with the winners tied on 37 points between Leon Smiler and Julian Wing, also tied for second were Terry Redding and Adam Jackson on 36 points, with such a large prize pool we did give a prize for third even though 4 were tied on 35 points, Camilla Dwyer, John Laidley, Rob Grootenhuijs and Larry Richard, after all it’s not about the money is it.  Thank You everybody and look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Royal Chiang Mai, 03.08.16

Because of the closing of the Mae Jo Golf Course this week we played a Stableford Nassau competition today at the Royal Chiang Mai Golf Course. Arguably one of the best courses in Chiang Mai 20 members and one guest joint todays competition. The Course was in great shape (all Bunkers are re sanded). We were allowed to start on the front and back and all players made it around 4 hours.

The Winner on the front nine were Brian Heuston and Adam Jackson with 18 points, the winner of the back nine with 20 points was Diane Mayo. Todays overall Winner with 35 points was Graham Adams.

All Winners were Australian!!

Lanna, 01.08.16

Another great day for golf at Lanna this Monday and we had 22 CMSG members playing stroke play on courses 3+1 and everyone was in-the-money.

Scoring was so close that the captain decided to award prizes to 6 people.

Third place was shared by Nok Chumarom, Soren Nielsen, and Keith Freeman with net scores of 75. Second place was shared by JJ Walker and Shaun Stewart with net scores of 74. And surprise, surprise, in first place was Lennart Larsson with net 71.

A good effort by all players, and we will see you all again next week for Stableford around courses 1+2.
