Match Report January 2017

North Hill, 30.01.17

Today, on a virtually empty course, we had 11 players which included one guest and Robert Coulter who submitted his 4th card. Leon Smiler, who is returning to Australia for an unknown length of time (we wish him safe travels and a quick return to Thailand) came second with 33 while first place went to Barry Ochitwa on 36.

Mae Jo 30.01.17

We had another good turn out today with 19 players for a stableford comp. Some very good scores recorded , a tie for 3rd. place between Barry Ralston, Jack Cooper and Kuzie with 34 points in 2nd. was Bob Green on 37 points, but our runaway winner today was Randy Teisel with 40 points. Thank you all for comming. See you on Wednesday. No photo, sorry.

Lanna, 30.01.17

Another lovely dry, sunny day at Lanna and we managed to slot in with the hordes of golf tourists and not get held up too much. Today was a “Match Play against the Course” round that ended up with too many players on the same score (-2) meaning that there was a 4-way tie for the runner-up position – Nigel Stubbs, Yukio Doi, Allen Norris and Mark Morris. Only one person bettered that score – the well-deserved winner of the day was Ted Taylor who literally showed us all up with a +3 (Stableford 39) and will find his handicap docked accordingly.

Next week is a STABLEFORD format around courses 3+1 with special scorecards.

Yukio, Mark, Ted, Allen, & Nigel

North Hill, 27.01.17

We had 18 members today at North Hill and 5 groups teed off both 1 and 10 because the course was not busy. Many players (captain not included) had some great scores which made deciding on the Stableford Nassau winners a bit of a nightmare. Too many members had 19 or 20 on each of the nines so it was best to award 2 prizes for “overall”. These went to Allen Norris with 40 points and Yung Beece with 39 points. The rest was then simple – Shaun Stewart getting the back nine with 19 points and Jack Cooper the front nine with 20 points.

Next week – nice simple Stableford at 8:10am.

Jack, Shaun, Yung, & Allen

Mae Jo, 27.01.17

Royal Chiang Mai (Away Game) 26.01.17

This January’s away match we had (19) members and (1) guest all arriving on time for an orderly on schedule start. The weather could not have been much better for a round of golf as we teed-off under cool temperatures  that eventually climbed to warmer conditions will a steady light breeze making it ideal.  The course was in excellent condition for both fairways and greens.  Unlike other courses all the greens ran true maintaining the same speeds for all (18) greens.  We all completed our respective rounds under 4 1/2 hours which is good during this high season.

Relative to the winners taking 1st place honors with an impressive score of (41) points was Kenny Jones.  We had a tie for 2nd place today being shared by Barry Ralston and Lawrence Hahlik both posting a score of (36) points.  Alone in 3rd place was Randy Teisl with (35) points.  Hat off to all of today’s winners.

We look forward to see everyone again on February 23, 2017 at our February away match at Mae Moh.

Barry, Lawrence, Kenny & Randy

Mae Jo, 25.01.17

With the Away Game tomorrow in sight we had only 10 members playing in todays Stroke event. As usual we teed off on time and when we made the turn after 01:40 hours we waited on the Tee # 10 with a 5 Ball and 2 four Balls just starting their round. So everyone finished at around 04:30 hours for their respective rounds. Rob Grootenhuijs finished with a net 79 in 3rd place, in 2 nd place with a net 74 was Frank Schwarz and todays Winner was Ronny Peters with a very good net 71.

Mae Jo 23.01.17

A great roll up for our first noon tee time at Mae Jo today, 21 members and 1 guest for stableford nassau. One of our members had 38 points a handicap reduction and not in the money, thats golf! On the front 9 there was a tie between Graham and Gerry on 21 points and the back was taken out by Ronnie with 22 points. Our overall winner today was Tim with a strong 40 points. Well done to those winners.  We wish Andy a safe trip to Australia and will see him on his return. Normal tee time Wednesday, see you all there.

Graham, Gerry, Tim & Ronny

Lanna 23.01.17

Today the masses descended upon Lanna Golf Course so we had 7 groups comprising 22 members (3 going for handicaps), and 3 guests. We started at 8:15 as usual but were held up most of the way around resulting in playing times of about 4:45, but the course was in good condition and the round was very enjoyable.

3rd place was awarded to Peter Brown (no photo due to back problems) with 33 points, and 2nd place to Soren Nielson with 34 points. Joint winners were Keith Freeman and David Urlwin-Smith with 35 points each. Next week is “Match Play Against the Course” starting at 8:22am.

David, Keith, & Soren

North Hill 20.01.17

It was another nice day at North Hill with 20 members arriving for the early start. But the 5 groups were held up a little so the rounds took well over 4 ½ hours. Scores weren’t too much to write home about either, with most players ending up with Stableford points in the 20’s.

In third place was Jomo MacDermott with 31 points. There was a tie for the runner-up position with Jack Cooper and Curtis Nickel both getting 32 points, but first place went to Leon Smiler (who amazed everyone with a long straight drive off the first tee) with 35 points.

Curtis, Leon, Jack, & Jomo

Mae Jo 20.01.17

A good turn out today for a stableford event with 18 members and 2 guests. Tied for 4th were Ric and Barry on 32 points and a 3 way tie for 1st. place on 36 points were Calvin,Andy and Joop. Well done, in the money and no movement in handicap ! Don’t forget Mae Jo Monday the tee time is 12.00.

Mae Jo 18.01.17

Today’s was not often played, highly beloved but for many confusing format Matchplay vs Course. It was another early start with pleasant temperatures. There where 12 people showing up this morning, Dennis being just in time to put him in the last group. While the committee members were enjoying themselves elsewhere, they called for the reserve team Ric & Harry to do the honors.

The acting captain Ric announced the two winners Calvin ( +5 ) who came in first and Andy, who came in second with a score of +2. Ric & Harry came in third but did not get any rewards for a score of -4.

Well done guys and see you all on Friday.

Calvin & Andy

Lanna, 16.01.17

A Tale of Two Keiths and Two Taylors

At 6:30am there were about 30 caddies and 30 players in the car park and about 20 caddies and 20 players on the first tee waiting for the sun to come up so panic set in. But my bookings were not tampered with and 4 groups (16 members) were away just after 8am. It was a bit of a slow round because of a 5-ball in front of us but everyone was eating by 1:30pm so not really a problem.

Today was a Stableford Nassau round that saw the two Keiths get 35 points each only to be outplayed by the other Taylor who had 37 points. Both Taylors had the highest 18 points on the back nine but because one Taylor had already won the overall prize, the back nine was awarded to the other Taylor. The Taylor who won overall also had 19 points on the front nine, but fortunately the Keith who didn’t win the back nine, won the front nine with 21 points. Still with me? If not – see the photograph.

Lanna office staff and the starters were very nice to me today. They have invited us to play in their Competition on February 11th. It’s a shotgun start very early for 1500 baht (Green Fee and Caddie Fee), and includes breakfast, lunch and a Shirt. The 6pm dinner I think is optional. I don’t have much more information, but I don’t think there will be much interest either being as it is on a Saturday. I’ll find out more next week.

Stableford 1+2 next week at 8:15am. Booking confirmed.

Keith (Front 9), Ted (Overall), Keith (Back 9)

North Hill, 16.01.17

Mae Jo 16.01.17

Todays stableford event we had only 7 members and 1 guest. A cool start to todays round saw Dianne winning with 36 points and a tie for 2nd. between Frank and Kuzie on 32 points. See you on Wednesday.

North Hill, 13.01.17

Another nice day at North Hill saw 20 members and 2 guests (6 groups) arrive ready for a long hot slog around a course that was supposed to be extremely busy. We were meant to use Tee #10, but that was changed to Tee #1 and Tee #10, and then that was changed to Tee #1. Unbelievably, the 1st group finished in 3 hours 25 minutes and I think that all the other groups had pretty quick rounds too.

Today’s format was “Par” or “Match Play against the Course”. There was a tie for 3rd place with Zero – Allen Norris and Rob Grootenhuijs. Runner-up was Ian Fraser who ended with a +2, but today’s winner was Soren Nielson with an impressive +3 in spite of all the “scrubbed” holes that he had. All smiles in the photo – you’d think that they’d all had holes-in-one and won SUVs.

Next week (Friday) will be busy too – first tee-time is 7:50am (Tee# 1) so I will probably have to draw some groups earlier than usual.

Rob, Ian, Soren, & Allen

Mae Jo, 13.01.17

A foggy start to todays Black Friday round of stableford. We had 18 members and 1 guest Randy who we will see much more of. No handicap yet but is already married to a caddy! How does that work? Back to the golf, 4 way tie for 3rd. on 32 points were Nigel, Barry, Ulrich and Jerry Buckley, in 2nd. was Iain Craig with 34 points and our winner today welcome back Joop on 38 points. Congratulations to todays winners. There will be some tee time changes as of the 23rd January so please check the Weekly Events Calendar.

Barry, Joop, Iain, Ulrich & Nigel

Mae Jo, 11.01.17

Another day with a weird weather for this time of the year. Light sprinkle and complete overcast with temperatures in the low 20’s. But nevertheless 11 members made it to the early starting time.

The results are front 16 points: Kuzie Harry and Dianne, the back Ric and Rob Grootenhuijs 19 points, over all was Barry Ralston 38 points.

Due to the dim light conditions and still a massive hangover from the home warming party, today no picture.

Lanna, 09.01.17

Today we were greeted with the news that we were playing courses 3+1 like last week. My 5-group booking was made for courses 1+2 about 2 months ago and I have religiously checked it every week since, so it was quite obvious that someone had whited-out our times and given them to others, and then put in a 3+1 booking for us for about 8 groups. This is not acceptable behaviour and I think that I made enough of a stink to the starter box and the office to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. What is the point of booking otherwise?

We really had no choice but to play 3+1 because there was the usual seasonal mass influx of golf tourists, but we played a Stableford format and nobody knew what their point scores were until the strokes were entered into the system. There were 21 players including 2 yet-to be-handicapped members (Ian Carr and Gerry Greba) and a couple of non-submissions. So, 3rd place went to Nigel Jones with 32 points, 2nd place to Lawrence Nahlik with 33 points, and 1st place to Bob Green with 34 points.

Thanks to all participants for not getting upset with the format or the really slow round. Not my doing! And no, I didn’t enjoy playing today (Mr Moh Hoh).

Lawrence, Bob, & Nigel

North Hill, 09.01.17

In absolutely pleasant weather 7 members played again. Both groups started on the back nine and with no groups in front moved through quickly. On the front nine the first group of three experienced some minor delays but both groups made it through 18 holes under 4 hours.

Camilla Dwyer and Ian Fraser tied for first place on 34.

See you next Monday by 08:00 for 08:30 tee off.

Ian & Camila

Mae Jo, 09.01.17

It took an eternity, at least thats what it felt like for ten members in todays matchplay against the course event. Again we were behind two five balls on the back nine, no group completing their round in under four and a half hours!

We say a fond farewell to Silvan Schwarz who is moving to New Zealand on wednesday. We wish him good luck and a safe journey.

As for todays results, again it was Frank Schwarz in third place with 3 down to the course. In second was yet again Diane Mayo at 1 down. I am however delighted to say that normal service has been resumed with todays winner, Nigel Stubbs at 2 up!

Silvan having a final dental check before departure!

Diane, Frank and Nigel

North Hill, 06.01.17

OK, so today was a little bit on the damp, cold and drizzly side, but that didn’t deter 16 members from braving the conditions at North Hill. Actually it wasn’t that bad out there because the course presented well after the recent poor weather and the intermittent rain today was very light.

Whilst it appears that most people had very inconsistent rounds there were a couple of good scores and the birdie hole was won yet again (by Roengrudee Chumaron), having just been won last week.

Leon Smiler (aka – “Wrong Fairway”) was Runner-up with 31 points, but the shared First prize went to Yung Beece and Shaun Stewart with 35 points each.

Next week will be “Match Play against the Course” with Par 4 #13 the Birdie hole. Hopefully this strange weather will have abated by then.

Roengrudee, Shaun, Yung, & Leon

Mae Jo, 06.01.17

The curious January weather in Chiang Mai continues. Cool and damp with occasional rain now appears to be a regular thing.

17 members joined todays stableford event, some enjoying their day far more than others! The course was relatively clear and all groups completed their rounds in about 4 hours.

In third place was Frank Schwarz (again) with 32 points. In second place with 34 points was Andy Galwey (again), and first, yet again, was Stuart Duncan with 36 points. Same old faces!

The photograph shows a desperate attempt to try and get Andy to the same stature as the other winners.

Frank, tall Andy, and Stuart.

Inthanon, 04.01.17

10 player today at Inthanon, 1 player stopped after nine as he ran out of balls.

weather was a bit cloudy but still warm. Bob had a very very good round and came first and Curtis came second.

Hope to see a good turn out next week.

Curtis & Bob

Mae Jo, 04.01.17

14 members enjoyed todays Stableford competition under cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 20’s. Everyone made it around in about 4 hours with no mayor hold ups. Tied in 3rd place with 33 points were Ric Cameron and Kuzie. Tied for 1st place with a even 36 points was Tom Berger and Calvin Davis. Well done guys.

See you all on Friday for a Stableford competition.

Kuzie, Ric, Calvin & Tom

North Hill, 02.01.17

7 members played in the initial Monday Stableford competition. Even though the course was surprisingly crowded, there were only a few minor hold ups at the start and both groups made it round in just over 4 hours. 2nd place went to Shaun Stewart on 32 and 1st place to Ian Fraser on 35.

The course is in excellent condition. Hopefully more members will turn up for next Monday by 08:00 for 08:30 tee off.

Ian & Shaun

Lanna, 02.01.17

Nice cool morning for 15 members playing the Lanna Racecourse (3) followed by Course (1) with the usual Strokeplay format. Quite a long 5 hours because there were hundreds of the expected (sometimes impatient) golf-tourists around, but the starter was on our side and correctly honoured our booked times at the midway turn.

The Birdie hole #1 was won by Curtis Nickel today and he also managed to be the outright winner with a Net 68. Keith Freeman was runner-up with Net 73, closely followed by Lawrence Nahlik with Net 75. Next Monday will be a Stableford event as usual around Courses 1+2.

Be reminded that for this month you can play twice around the Course 3 (Racecourse) for 600 baht (Green Fee + Caddie Fee).

Lawrence, Curtis, and Keith

Mae Jo, 02.01.17
