Match Report March 2017

North Hill, 31.03.17

A nice even 16 members turned out today all in good time for a random draw of the four groups who took advantage of an early start for the stableford round.  We welcomed back Leon Smiler today who managed to confirm his standing as a “cross-country golfer” from the first tee hitting his ball across lakes and fairways to the 8th green but to be fair he did still manage a bogey on the par 5 first hole, welcome back Leon.  As one returns another departs and we say goodbye to Curtis Nickel who has to go back to work for a month or so, but he did manage to chip in to take out the birdie hole #9 and had a winning round to boot, well done Curtis.  The winner today was Yung Beece with 38 points (he also managed to hit the flag on the birdie hole but not quite lucky enough to have it drop in) runners up were Curtis Nickel with 37 points and Brian Heuston with 36 points.  Well done to all concerned.

Curtis, Yung, Brian

Mae Jo, 31.03.17

Some good scores were recorded today, in 3rd was Alex on 37 points in 2nd. on 41 was Nigel but our runaway winner today was John with 43 points. Congrats to todays winners. See you on Monday !!

31.03.2017 – Stableford Maejo

Inthanon, 29.03.17

Just 8 members for today’s outing and once again we had the course to ourselves.  Noi Taylor took first place with Ralph Hamilton coming second. The 18th hole played 3.5 strokes over par with only one par made and then that golfer didn’t have to putt which was just as well because the pin placement caused havoc with the members. Even when balls were left short and below the hole they did not hold and would run back to the original spot again.

Mae Jo, 29.03.17

20 members and 1 guest played our stableford comp. today in very warm conditions. A 3 way tie for 2nd. between Ronny, Nigel and John on 34 points but our winner today on 36 points was Kenny. Well done to those players. There will be no golf next Wednesday the 5th. as the course will be closed. Nigel is looking for numbers to play Lana 850 baht green fees and caddy. It’s also that time of the year again for the pissheads invitional. The current propsed dates for this is the 13,14 and 16th. of April. Please contact Iain Craig for more details and register your intrest in playing. If you haven’t play this event before do yourself a favour and get involved.

John, Kenny, Ronny and Nigel.

North Hill, 27.03.17

Today we had 5 players including Brian and Camilla who returned from Australia yesterday. Unfortunately, Camilla retired hurt and was not able to complete her round. The winner was a new member Terry Yuill on 36 with Brian Heuston 2nd on 35.

The birdie hole was not won and owing to the number of players only first place was awarded.

Terry

Lanna, 27.03.17

Today at Lanna we had a small contingent of 10 members. The course was almost totally empty and all groups easily finished inside of 4 hours. It was pretty windy which helped to blow away the smoke and allow us to see blue sky quite early on, and scoring was pretty good with all members (except for Captain Keith) achieving over 30 points. There was a tie for runner-up position between Nigel Stubbs and Jomo MacDermott (both having 37 points), but the winner of the day was David Urlwin-Smith who managed to score 42 points. Jomo also took out the Par 5 Birdie hole which hadn’t accumulated very much – it is obviously time to choose a more difficult hole.

Best wishes to Mark Morris who is returning to the UK for about 6 months – see you again in October. And we’ll hopefully see the rest of you next week for Stroke play around Courses 3+1.

Nigel, David, & Jomo

Mae Jo, 27.03.17

14 people for our stableford event today in very humid and warm conditions.  In a tie for 2nd. on 36 points was Alex and Rob but our winner today on 39 points was Tom who has been playing some solid golf of late. Congrats to all , see you on Wednesday. Don’t forget the course is closed on the 4th. and 5th. of April.

Rob,Tom and Alex.

27.03.2017 – Stableford Maejo

North Hill, 24.03.17

There were 11 members today for a stableford event. Welcome back to Lawrence and Curtis after short absences.  No one managed to take out the birdie hole #9 which will continue to mount on Mondays and Fridays.  Only two prizes today the winner with 37 points was Jayjay Walker and the runner up was Tayakorn with 36 points so it was Ladies Day today leaving the men to get an honorable mention tied for third place was Keith  Freeman and Curtis with 35 points.

Jayjay and Tayakorn

Mae Jo, 24.03.17

13 players for our stableford event today. The course was very quiet with all groups finishing in under 4 hours. In 3rd. place was Tom on 36 points and a tie for 1st. between Alex and Ronny on 37 points. Ronny had 6 birdies and Ric Cameron eagled 5. Well done to all, see you on Monday.

International, North Hill, 23.03.17

For the 2017 “International” we had (53) members comprising (14) teams all arriving on time for an most orderly on schedule 9:00 AM tee-off.  Prior to announcing the results a special thank you goes out to Gary and JayJay Walker for coordinating the on-course aspects of this year’s tournament. Also, hats off to the staff of North Hills for their outstanding efforts to make this a most successful event.

Relative to the results it should be noted that David Urlwin Smith won both closest to the pin on holes #4 and # 14. On hole #4 David tee shot was 5′-31/2″ from the pin and on hole 14 he was 1′-81/2″ from the pin.  Based on our policy of only (1) prize per member Peter (Smiley) Haddon was awarded a prize for second place on hole #4 with a shot of 7″6″ from the pin.  Great golf David and Smiley!

Jack & Smiley

David Urlwin

Getting to the overall results we had some pretty impressive results as noted in the following results

1st Place Team USA:                                    Gross 65      Net 55

Team USA (Trump), Mike, Jack, Randy & Tom

Note:  It should be noted that the difference between 1st place and 2nd place difference in gross score was 4 strokes but the net score variance due to the decimal system being utilized was only .245 or only a 1/4 of stroke net!  That’s a heart break for the 2nd place team.

2nd Place Team Chiang Mai:                         Gross 69      Net 56

Runner Up, Team Chiang Mai, Jomo, Darrell, Kieran & Roscoe

3rd Place Tie being shared by

Team Brits                                                    Gross 69   Net 58.12

Team Geelong Cats                                   Gross 66   Net 58.12

*so much for 2 digit team handicaps

Tied for third: Team England: Mark, Nigel J., David and Julian

Tied third: Geelong Cats, Bob, Kuzie, Shannon and Graham (not in picture)

Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!

Mae Jo, 22.03.17

Only a small group of 9 players today for our stableford comp. In 3rd. on 32 points was Kuzie in 2nd. on 34 points was Nigel and todays winner was Tom on 36 points. Well done to all.

North Hill, 20.03.17

Lanna, 20.03.17

There was only a small turnout of 10 players today at Lanna, probably because it is the week of the Monthly away game. The 3-balls managed to finish in around 3 hours, but the 4-ball kept up a leisurely pace and took just over 4 hours on an otherwise empty course. Nobody birdied Hole #5 so that will accumulate, and because of the small showing there were only 2 prizes. The runner-up was Allan Gariano who played pretty well out of numerous bunkers and got 34 points, but Julian Wing was the winner with 35 points. Same format next week, by which time hopefully they will have cleared away all of those leaves.

Allan & Julian

Mae Jo, 20.03.17

A rather small group of 13 players for todays stroke nassau event. The course was very quiet with all finishing in under 4 hours. The winners today were the front net 36 was Frank the back with net 34 was Kuzie a tie for overall on net 72 was Joop and John. Well done ! Don’t forget the International on Thursday at North Hill 9 am teeoff so please be there at least 30 minutes before.

Kuzie,John,Joop andFrank.

North Hill, 17.03.17

Today was the EDDIE MILLAR MEMORIAL TROPHY DAY and it was a stroke event which would have pleased Eddie as this was his idea that golf should always be played as a stroke event.  He would have also been extremely happy that it was played on St. Patricks Day to be sure.  We can’t promise that in the future it will always be so but we will try to get it as close as possible.

There were 20 golfers 19 members and one new member signed up on the day, Terry Yuill, welcome to the club.  There were plenty in green but a definite shortage of green beer or Irish whiskey.  Of course there were a few typical Irish who turned up after the event not thinking it was a tournament but it was good to see Kieran and family there in support.

I always thought that a stroke event would be difficult at North Hill but was really surprised with the results on the day.   The greens were fast, probably because things are drying out in the heat, but as always true.  The White tees were back again today almost to the blues which I am sure pleased those now going off the blues.

We farewell a few semi regulars today with Gerry Brimacombe and Shane returning to there regular domiciles for a bit. Also welcome back to Keith Freeman after his break in Vietnam and Curtis and Jomo who we haven’t seen in a while.

The big surprise on the day was that the birdie hole #13 was finally taken out after 12 weeks by Yung Beece, but we should not be really surprised as it does seem to be a family tradition as Dao has also managed it previously. The new birdie hole will be decided by Ian Fraser on the Monday event at  North Hill and will be combined with the Friday event at North Hill in all future events.

Today being a stroke event produced a tie for first place necessitating a count back to produce a single winner for the perpetual trophy.  Both Ralph Hamilton and Garry Walker tied with net 77 but on count back Garry took the trophy for the first year of this event.  Runners up were also tied between Jomo McDermid and Christian Friis and prizes were distributed accordingly.

The service on food and drinks was a bit on the slow side and especially on the provision of the bills for payment  for which we apologize and everyone should take this into consideration for the future International event as there will be a lot more of us.  Currently we get a bonus of a 100 baht credit voucher for your food as this months special and this should be appreciated and do a little to appease any frustrations.  Enjoy the day, enjoy the golf and enjoy the social aspects of our club days here in Thailand.

Ten members turned up today.  Joining the regulars were Shannon and Sharinee Livingston, Darryl Pinney, Larry Richard and Curtis Nickel back from his break. As usual we had the course to ourselves and the last group finished in about 4.5 hours.

We had a secret 9 holes selected by the Inthanon receptionist. Tying for joint first were Larry and Curtis on 18 points each.

Larry & Curtis

Maejo, 15.03.17

This Wednesday we had (16) members playing is a Stableford match under extremely hot conditions. Luckily, the course was not too busy and most groups completed their respective round in (4) hours or less.

Today’s Winners are as follows:

Hats off to today’s winners – well played!

Rob, Joop & Ronnie

Lanna, 13.03.17

Only 11 players braved the heat for todays stableford, but with Doi Suthep still in plain view the air quality was good. All groups completed in under four hours on what was a quiet course again.

The highlight of the day had to be the fluent Thai speaking Tom Berger. He quietly explained to the waitress that the slogan on her tee shirt, ‘absofu@@inglutely single’ contained a swear word. She was horrified and immediately went and changed!

In third today was David Urlwin with 32 points, sharing first place on 34 points were Julian Wing and Nigel Stubbs. We look forward to the return of Keith as captain next week.

Julian, Nigel and David

Mae Jo, 13.03.17

Today we had step back stroke. Red play from white and white play from blue. 11 members turned up today. A tie for 2nd. place with Rob and Frank on net 79 but our winner today was Ronny on net 73. It is a different course from the blues and was well recieved by the players to the extent that 3 players have confirmed they will play off the blues from now on.  Thank you all for coming congrats to the winners , see you all on Wednesday.

Frank and Ronny.

N0rth Hill, 10.03.17

There were 15 Golfers today 14 members and one prospective new member putting in his second card but yet to join. Very hot today and some of the white tees were right back and some difficult pin positions on a few greens which probably account for, or at least made excuses for the sad scores.   welcome back to Shannon Livingstone who will be with us again apparently for several months. Once again no one was good enough to take out the birdie hole on #13.  Todays winners were Soren Nielsen with 35 points, Garry Walker with 32 points and Roger Mack & Jayjay Walker tied on 30 points. Congratulations to the winners and we hope to see you  and many more again next week on St. Patricks Day.

Roger, Jayjay, Garry, Soren

Mae Jo, 10.03.17

A large group today with 22 players for our stableford event in rather warm conditions. Good by winter! In 3rd. place was Jomo with 35 points in 2nd. was Tom with 38 points but our runaway winner today was Stuart with 43 points. Hope you like your new handicap Mr. Duncan. Thank you all for coming and a big congrats to todays winners. Step back stroke on Monday hope to see you all then.

Hole 12 – Free Drop (No penalty) 1 club lenght:  When player’s ball lands in a drainage ditch in the tree area on the far-right side of the fairway. For clarification, this is the tree area that starts past the water hazard and also is approximately 10 meters from the right side of the cart path past the water hazard.

Jomo, Stuart and Tom.

Inthanon, 08.03.17

It was good to see Allan and Joy Gariano at Inthanon today and we had just 6 members and the course to ourselves.  Everyone struggled again for some reason to post a decent score.  There were many big numbers on the par 5s which played nearly 3 strokes over par with Allan being the only golfer to make a par on the 11th par 5. We had a Skins game with Ralph taking home first place despite having the highest net score and Barry second beating Smiley on countback.

Mae Jo, 08.03.17

We had a better roll up today with 16 players for stableford nassau. The front was tied on 18 points between Tom and Nigel and the back was taken out by Joop also on 18 points. Todays overall winner was Kuzie on 38 points. Thank you all for coming. See you all on Friday.

Tom, Nigel, Kuzie and Joop.

Lanna, 06.03.17

16 members and three guests enjoyed millionaires golf on both courses today, the first group completing in under 4 hours.

Today we said farewell to Jack Cooper who leaves for England tomorrow. Also a belated farewell to Gordon Langtry who has left for six months to do something called work??!!

In third place with anett 73 was Ashley Kim Sing. Second was Nigel Stubbs with a nett 72, but todays runaway winner was Mark Morris with a nett 67.

Join us next week for a straight stableford on courses 1 and 2.

Nigel, Mark and Ashley

Mae Jo, 06.03.17

We only had 8 players today for stableford nassau. The front was won by Frank with 18 points and the back by Rob with 19 points a 3 way tie for overall on 33 points were Bob Green, Ronny Peters and Joop. Thank you all for coming. Congrats to the winners. See you all and hopefully more on Wednesday.

Rob, Joop, Frank, Bob & Ronnie

North Hill, 03.03.17

18 Golfers, 17members (16 in comp), 1 visitor all arrived in good time and away early off the first tee in the usual stableford competition.  Once again the 13th proved too difficult to birdie and the prize snowballs for another week.  The winner today was Jack Cooper coming in with 37 points before heading off back home to the UK for a few months, good luck with that. A tie for second with 35 points between Ashley and Jomo.

Regarding Mondays game at North Hill with some regulars away the group is struggling for numbers but Ian Fraser has said that he will be there to play regardless and if anyone interested to just turn up.

The Eddie Millar Memorial Trophy will now be played on the 17th March (St. Patricks Day) at North Hill so as not to clash with the International being played the following week.  It is St. Patrick’s Day so make sure you wear some green or you may not be seen.  It will be a stroke event and there can only be one winner of the trophy so in case of a draw there will be a count back to determine the winner of the perpetual trophy.

Ashley, Jack, Jomo

Mae Jo, 03.03.17

20 members and one guest created six groups today, for some reason we were all off the first tee! On a very quiet course the first three ball finished in three hours and twenty minutes.

After some confusion with the scoring, one card saying 38 points when the actual score was 26!!, the winners were as follows:

Fourth on 33 points was Graham (never gets cut) Adams, Second was Joop Schillemans with 35 points. Tied for first were Ronny Peters and Bob Green on 36 points.

Joop, Graham, Ronny & Bob

Inthanon, 01.03.17

Just 6 members and 2 guests for today’s game and we basically had the course to ourselves as our other Asian golfers had departed these shores.   Scoring was on the low side with Smiley taking the honours with 28 and Ashley second on 27 points.

Ashley & Smiley

Mae Jo, 01.03.17

19 Players showed showed up for the first 08:00 am Tee time off the season. Today’s format was Stableford. It is getting warmer no doubt about that.

We had a four way tie for 2nd place with Ted Taylor, Ans Scholten, Graham Adams & Michael Kuzmich all with 35 points. We also had 2 way tie for 1st place between Ronnie Peters and Robert Green with 37 points.

Congrats to all Winners

Kuzie, Ted, Ans, Graham, Bob & Ronny
