Match Reports October to December 2013

Mae Jo Tuesday, 31.12.13

A total of 31 members arrived today to compete in the Tombstone competition, 29 members and 2 guests. After collecting their crosses and the scorecards we proceeded to both the 1st and the 10th tees where the weather made it a very interesting start to the game. The fog was heavy and low which made visibility extremely difficult. We had to send our caddies to follow the group ahead of us and report back to us when we were clear to tee off. Among our CMSG members, we were shouting back to players behind us to inform them that it was safe for them to play………such fun! Gradually the fog lifted and 5 to 6 holes in to the game we started to see the light. Everyone had fun and it was a fitting end to 2013. Given the number of crosses lying around and on the 16th green, it has been decided to declare the 16th an official burial ground.

The competition was played as two separate competitions, those going from the 10th formed a group and those from the 1st formed a group, this was necessary to accommodate the purpose of this format. All players played using only 80% of their course handicap and results are based on this.

Results

Overall best net for the day went to Jeff Crosthwaite with a net of 73

Placing their cross at the furthest point on the course from those teeing off on the 1st was Jim Hopkins who managed to play his final shot to the 18th green.

Similarly from the group playing from the 10th tee Peter Gamble-Bersford claimed the prize with his final shot resting 180 yards from the 9th green.

Congratulation to all winners.

Stableford – 31.12.2013 – Maejo Friday

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Lanna Monday, 30.12.13

Twenty eight members and guests came to Lanna on Monday for a Stableford round including a visit from the ex acting Maejeo Captain and son Willie Hopkins. The more jaded members thought there may be an  ulterior motive in this but the Lanna Captain playing in the same group detected no such thing. Ram Taylor tied with Allan Gariano for first prize with 34 points while Gordon Langtry sewed up second with 33 points. Another Taylor (Noi) tied with Allen Norris in third place with 32 points.
It should be mentioned that the Lanna management did the right thing by giving the normal sports day price to CMSG which was booked as such while charging everyone else holiday fees.
Next Week is the monthly stroke competition on your favourite two courses.

Mae Jo Friday, 27.12.13

Today saw the arrival of 27 members and 2 guests all hoping to play with CMSG. Unfortunately for 1 person, today was a 2BBB format and it was not possible to include everyone in the groupings. Fortunately one guest was able to join some visitors at the course and hopefully he enjoyed his golf. As a Society, we really have no wish to turn people away but it is imperative that everyone reads the website for details of the format for the day. Of the remaining 28 players, 26 competed as teams of two in the 2BBB. Of the 13 teams competing, it should be noted that three of these teams were Father and Son teams. The pace of play was good and once again we were blessed with fabulous weather conditions. Thank you to all who supported today’s competition.

Results:

First place: Father and son team of Jim and Willie Hopkins with a net 61

Willie Hopkins put his second shot on hole no. 4 (par 5) left of the bunker; then he pitched a 58 degree wedge into the hole for an Eagle! …….congratulations!! Obviously Dad was there to provide all the support needed for Willie to achieve this.
“Young Jimmie” Hopkins also won the Caddy Hole and sunk his put for a birdie on hole No. 7. Well done to you both.

Second place: Lesley and Jim Catterson with a net 64

Wee Jimmy Catterson put his tee shot on the par 3 14th, just of the green. He played a tremendous chip from about 30 foot from the hole and sank it for a birdie! Well done.

Third place: Tom Berger and Graham also with a net 64

I look forward to see ing everyone on Tuesday for the Gravestone competition.

Mae Jo Tuesday, 24.12.13

It would seem that the festive format suggested by Jim Hopkins was a very popular choice for today. 37 players arrived to participate in the golf today, 33 of which were members with current playing handicaps. All players played from the red tees and many members arrived wearing the festive colors, thank you to all for your efforts and support. It was yet another cold start to the day and a strange mist fell over the golf course making visibility very difficult. Despite the start, the weather improved and we were once again rewarded with fabulous conditions. It seems that many of the men favor playing from the red tees and this was clearly reflected in todays scores.

Results:

Taking first place with 39 points was Jack Cooper

2nd, 3rd and 4th places were shared with 38 points but the count-back separated them to give second place to Sam Torr and taking third place was Tom Berger.

Stableford – 24.12.2013 – Maejo Tuesday

Congratulations to all of todays winners.

The owners and staff at the Caddy Shack have provided us with an excellent service this year and have provided a new covered eating and drinking area and car park to accommodate our growing numbers. To show our appreciation, Ron Hill suggested a collection. Tom Berger and Jim Hopkins as our fluent This speakers each made a presentation. Thank you to all members who contributed and a special thanks to Jeff Crosthwaite who donated his winnings from the monthly medal competition.

Merry Christmas to all, see you on Friday for our monthly 2BBB. Have a fabulous day tomorrow!

Lanna Monday, 23.12.13

A great turnout at Lanna to play with Santa’s balls and a regular Stableford on Monday. Nine groups of thirty three members and guests set out with brilliant red balls and only five balls returned. Group 4 led by Rob Lassig had the best score at 99 and took the first Santa prize. Second Santa prize went to Group 9 led by Kieran with a 102. Ram Taylor led Group 8 to third place and a chocolate prize. There was no prize for the first lost/drowned Santa ball, but by all accounts it would have gone to Dave Robertson who achieved this feat on the second hole.

In the Stableford competition first place went to last week’s winner Darrell Pinney with 38 points and a good look from the handicapper. Second place was a tie at 37 points between Mike Mason and David U-S. Tom Berger took third place with 36 points.

Thanks for the great turnout and support and a happy Christmas to all.

Mae Jo Friday, 20.12.13

The temperatures in Chiang Mai are incredibly cold at the moment and the early starts at Mae Jo are allowing our members to experience first hand these reduced temperatures. Many of us arrive well wrapped up sporting jumpers, long trousers and jackets, even the caddies were wearing woolen scarves! Despite the cold and early start, we had 19 members and 1 guest arrive today and other than the initial cold start the conditions were perfect for golf. The results for today’s stableford event are:

1st place went to Joe Albright with 35 points. Joe is certainly enjoying playing from the red tees and is becoming a regular on the winner’s podium. Well done Joe.

We had two players with 34 points but after a count back,

2nd place went to Lennart with 34 points and

3rd place was taken by Ron Hill also with 34 points

Well done to all of today’s winners. On Tuesday we have a competition nominated by Jim Hopkins. In the spirit of Christmas, all members will play from the red tees and we ask that you make an effort to dress in red. Tee times start at 0712 so another cold and early start is required. I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

Mae Jo Tuesday, 17.12.13

We had a terrific turn out at Mae Jo today with 27 members and 3 guests arriving to enjoy a round of golf. Of course today was the Monthly Medal Final and 16 of those arriving were competing for one of the 4 trophies available. All 27 members also competed in the usual Monthly Medal competition. The weather was cold, particularly for the early stages and although the sun did try to fight it’s way through the clouds, it was a poor attempt and many of us played the entire round with sweaters or jackets on. Added to the cold, was a rather strong wind, which made golfing a little more interesting! Mae Jo GC is remarkably quiet at the moment despite it being high season. It seems that the current trouble in Bangkok has influenced many golfers. Given the unexpected reduced number of visitors, most of us were able to complete our rounds in approximately 4 hours.

Results for today’s competitions:

Monthly Medal:

Division A:    Lowest Gross went to Jack Cooper with a gross 84

Lowest Net went to Joe Albright with a net 71

Division B:    Lowest Gross went to Jeff Crosthwaite with a gross 92

Lowest Net went to Graham Adams with a net 71

2013 Monthly Medal Final:

Division A:   Low gross Trophy was presented to Jack Cooper

Low net Trophy was presented to Yung Beece with a net 72

Division B:   Low gross Trophy was presented to Graham Adams with a gross 97

Low net Trophy was presented to Joop Schillemans with a net 78

Big congratulations to all of todays winners and a huge thank you to everyone who participated in todays competition. Note: While 27 members competed, 2 players withdrew from the competition during their game hence 2 cards were not submitted. Medal can be tough! IMG_0050

Lanna Monday, 16.12.13 In the words of Gordon Langtry “it was a beautiful day for golf “. After a couple of strange December rainy days Monday began the week with blue skies and a light breeze with cool temperature. Seventeen members one guest and a new recruit enjoyed the weather and the golf at Lanna some more than others. Darrell Pinney certainly enjoyed the day scoring 42 points and first prize with the closest competition coming from Mike Mason and Yukio Doi who tied for second place with 36 points each. Third place went to the reliable John Barrett with 34. Next week is Christmas week so bring your cheer to Lanna for a round of Stableford.   Lanna 16.12.13

Mae Jo Friday, 13.12.13

23 members arrived at Mae Jo today for our first 4BBB competition. 23?, well we had 6 teams of 4 but Kim Anderson had to withdraw from the competition due to bruised ribs, we hope you recover soon Kim. The remainder of the team decided to compete with only three members, well done guys! The weather conditions were perfect for golf and although we had a little rain, it did not last long enough to dampen anyone’s spirits. All rounds were completed in under 4.5 hours……a steady slow pace. Prizes were paid out for the 2 winning teams, 8 members in total receiving winnings. Results: First place: Jack Cooper, Harry Nieuwland, John Noyes and Jeff Crosswhaite with 92 points Second place: Jim Hopkins, Ken Nalder, Don Bishop and Joe Albright with 89 points. Please note, on Tuesday we have the usual monthly medal competition and the medal final for those of you who have qualified during the year. Visit https://chiangmaisocialgolfers.org/2013/10/27/maejo-champions-final-medal-2013/ for a list of members qualifying for the final. Tee times on Tuesday begin at 0720. IMG_0035

Well done to the above winners!

Mae Jo Tuesday, 10.12.13 We had perfect weather conditions for golf today at Mae Jo, warm but not too hot and no mist! 25 members arrived, 23 competitors and 2 members still earning their society handicaps. We played in seven groups, three 3-balls and four 4-balls and as usual, Mae Jo staff allowed us to use both the 1st and 10th tees. The troubles in Bangkok have reduced the expected visiting parties and so the pace of play today was very good for high season. The format was stableford and prizes were given for the best front 9, best back 9 and the best overall scores. Some very good results came in and the back 9 prize was decided on a count back between Gerry B, Yung and Harry N. The final results were: Overall winner: Lennart Larsson 39 points Best front 9: Joe Albright 20 points Best back 9: Harry Nieuwland 19 points Well done to all today’s winners. I look forward to seeing you all on Friday for the team event, tee off 0720.

Lanna Monday, 09.12.13

A lovely cool day at Lanna with a course that was unexpectedly not crowded. Twenty one members and three guests teed off for the weekly Stableford and the cooler weather produced some hot results. Earning a massive cut in his handicap Hiro scorched round the course and with some superb putting produced 25 points on the front nine and 21 on the back for a winning total of 46 and a possible Club record. Second place with a very good effort was John Dalton who had 17 points on the front and 21 on the back for a 38 total. Third place went to Ram who holed three pars on the front and two on the back for a total of 36 points. The club has received complaints about not using the “call hole” feature of Thai golf, that is calling up to the green the group behind on the par threes. This is particularly important if the last CMSG group is being followed by a Thai or other group. See you next week.

Mae Jo Friday, 06.12.13

20 members arrived ready to play, for the first time at Mae Jo, the 2BBB Multiplier. A further 2 members joined us but were unable to compete in todays competition due to their unexpected arrival but both played within the Society’s allotted tee times along side todays competitors.  A warm welcome to Ken Nalder and Anton Buys! It was certainly a very cold start to the day and as we played our first hole, the low mist made visibility poor and it was almost impossible to follow the flight of the balls. Fortunately this cleared within 2-3 holes for most. As usual we were able to send groups out from both the 1st and 10th tees, thank you to the staff at Mae Jo for their assistance. Those playing from the 10th were fortunate to play their rounds without much delay, however those of us playing from the 1st experienced an incredibly slow round of golf with much waiting over their shots. This was due to a visiting party playing before us and no delay was caused by our own members. It seems that the high season is well under way and we must become patient golfers over the coming few months. Despite the slow play, everyone was in high spirits after the game and a steady flow of banter and laughter was present at our regular meeting place, The Caddy Shack. Thank you to everyone for your great spirit and patience during today’s competition. Regarding the results: 1st place: Bart Hendricks and Gerry Brimacombe with 79 points 2nd place: Jack Cooper and Ric Cameron with 66.25 points 3rd place: Frank and Silvan Schwarz with 62 points Congratulations to all the winners. Also worth a note is Bart’s individual score of 42 points. Happy new handicap Bart!! I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday for a 0720 start for our usual stableford event. We will be playing for the best front 9, the best back 9 and best overall. NB I have a new phone so when taking the photo of today’s winners, I was extra cautious and took 2 photos. I heard the whoosh when I took the photos but have been unable to find them on my phone. It appears that I still have a lot to learn! My apologies. I will endeavour to post the photo at a later date.

Mae Jo Tuesday, 03.12.13

On a cool morning with lovely weather, we had 24 members join us at Mae Jo for an individual Stableford competition along with two new members who are still establishing their handicaps. The pace was fairly good for the high season, with all of us finishing within four hours, after teeing off simultaneously on holes no. 1 and no. 10. First place went to Joe “Spectre” Albright with 36 points who “Teed It Forward” off of the red tees – it looks like he likes the red tees and will enjoy his golf more from there. Well done Joe. Second place went to Rick Cameron with 35 points, who continued his hot streak after winning at Lanna on the day before. Get it while it’s hot — Rick! Third place went to one of our most consistently good golfers – Tom Berger with 34 points (currently ranked no. 3 on the Player of the Year Competition). Well done golfers!  Thanks to everyone for coming out to join the team event for very enjoyable day of social golf.

Winners: Rick, Tom, Joe, and out-going Acting Captain Jim

Returning the Captainship: After announcing the results, our Acting Captain Jim Hopkins handed-over the Captain’s Gavel to our duly elected Captainess – Lesley Mullen, who was dearly missed by all of us for the past few months. While he did his best, he was no match for Lesley, and there seemed to be a lack of the usual spicy flavour to our luncheons during the gap period.

Out-going Acting Captain’s Message: Speaking on behalf of our distinguished members, as the out-going Acting Captain, I welcome the return to the Good Old Days when we enjoyed being directed by our esteemed Captain Lesley of the Mae Jo chapter of the CMSGs – who shall resume her role as Captain again starting on 4 December 2013. Long Live Captain Lesley! Please note that our tee-off times for December through February will start a bit earlier – so we can get off before the large tour groups roll-in. See you next Friday 6 December for our Two-Ball Multiplier Stableford (Modified) teeing-off at 7.20. Please submit your proposed  2-person teams to Frank as soon as possible – and remember, the principle is to mix up the teams, not to play with the same person every Friday.

Lanna Monday, 02.12.13

There are cooler mornings now but the course is heating up with the arrival of our annual Asian guests leading to slower play and delay.  Eighteen members turned out for the monthly stroke competition on the race course and course one on Monday. The winner of the day Captain Gary playing off the forward tees had declined to enter the prize competition and came home with a net 73. The first place prize went to a tie at net 76 between Ric and Noi while the second place prize went to another tie between Mike Mason and Peter brown at net 77. Mae Jo Friday, 29.11.13

Under an overcast sky with a light breeze, we had 22 members join us at Mae Jo for this year’s first 2-person scramble competition among 11 teams, which were re-mixed from last Friday’s Best Ball to facilitate the social aspect of our team competitions. We played at a fairly good pace for the high season, finishing in four hours, with a threesome and three foursomes teeing off of hole no. 1 and three foursomes off of hole no. 10. Special thanks go to the Mae Jo starters Khun Tum and Khun Na for their support in keeping us moving along at a good pace. The scramble format brought out the skills of our members, with an impressive performance – 7 out of the 11 teams came in net under par. First place went to the well-matched “Reds & Whites” team of ‘Young Jimmy’ Catterson (red tees) and Jack Cooper (white tees). The invincible “Reds & Whites” won the competition with a net 66 off of an 8 handicap. Let’s all congratulate the “Reds & Whites” team! Good luck to them next week with their new playing partners. For second place, we had a tie at net 68 between Frank Schwarz & Gerry Brimacome, and Calvin Davis & Bart Hendricks – which matched the lowest handicap team (6) and the highest handicap team (18). These results seem to help to validate the handicap system based upon slope to level the playing field. After the countback on the eighteenth hole, Frank & Gerry’s par won second place for them; so Calvin & Bart beat the rest of the field to take third place, knocking down the net 69 of Harry Nieuwland and Jim Hopkins to fourth place. We wish a cordial goodbye to Calvin until after the New Year. We were especially happy to welcome back a renewed and clean-living Ron Hill – who gelled with Joe Albright to bag three birdies in a row for their team on the front nine. Good show gentlemen! Thanks to everyone for coming out to join the team event for very enjoyable day of social golf. Please note that our tee-off times for December through February will start a bit earlier – so we can get off before the large tour groups roll-in. See you next Tuesday 3 December for Individual Stableford – we will tee-off at 7.20 hrs., so please register before 7.00 hrs. to ensure an orderly start off of no. 1 and 10. We are all looking forward to Lesley Mullen joining us on Tuesday — after the competition, Acting Captain Jim Hopkins will hand back the Captainship to Lesley at the luncheon for Tuesday’s competition at the Mae Jo CMSGs Clubhouse, affectionately known as the CaddyShack. We look forward to a big turnout for this occasion — the return to the Good Old Days under our chosen Captainess.

Dao Beece joined us again for the first time since the Annual Tournament and won first place with 38 points  — she was the only lady in the competition, but ‘Young Jimmy’ accompanied her around from the forward tees, so she was not lonesome.   Tom Berger had a good day, coming in second with 35 points. We had a three way tie for third place at 34 points among Stuart Duncan, Kim Anderson, and Calvin Davis. On the countback, Stuart won third place – keeping up his good showing over the past month. Only two Ladies out on Monday to join twenty men in a Stableford and before the match Pung Bacchhi was joking that in a Ladies twosome there wasn’t enough opportunity for a good chat. Well the lack of chatting must have resulted in better concentration on golf as Pung stormed home with 38 points and a share of first place. Not joining the competition Pung let first place prize go to Ric Cameron who also had a fine 38 points. Hot on Rics heels was a tie at 37 points between  John Barrett and Mike Mason who shared the second  place prize. Third place went to Lennart playing off the the forward tees and scoring 36 points. 21 members joined us at Mae Jo with 18 playing in a 2 Ball Best Ball Stableford competition. Jeff and Bartho are still putting in scorecards to establish their handicaps, and Peter stepped back from the competition to take it easy on his strained back – let’s hope that he recovers soon. We enjoyed a cool day, teeing off simultaneously on holes no. 1 and 10, and playing at a steady pace that allowed our three threesomes and four foursomes to finish in just over four hours. The day saw very impressive scoring of Stableford points in the best ball format, with 6 out the nine teams earning 40 or more points. Tom Berger and Frank Schwarz took first place with a very impressive round scoring 43 points. Craig Morriss and Stuart Duncan came in second with 42 points. For third place, we had a tie at 41 points between Bart Hendricks and Yung Beece, and Harry Nieuwland and Joop Schillemans  — on the countback all the way to the twelfth hole, Harry and Joop won with a par on number twelve. The crowds are thickening with 25 members 1 new member and two guests venturing out after two or three days of firework bombardment from the Loi Kraton celebrations. Second place was a tie at 35 points between Kim Stogner and Noi Taylor. Third place was also a tie at 34 points between John Barrett and Pranee Buckley. 27 social golfers joined us at Mae Jo including two guests, two members still establishing handicaps, and 23 members competing in the Monthly Medal tournament with eleven players in Flight A (handicap 0-20) and twelve players in Flight B (handicap 21-39). We enjoyed beautiful weather, teeing off simultaneously on holes no. 1 and 10, and playing at a steady pace in six foursomes and a threesome. In Division A, Frank Schwarz won Low Gross with an 87. We had a tie for Low Net at 76 between Gerry Brimacombe and Tom Berger – on the countback, Gerry won with his par on no. 18, taking the Low Net at 76 off of a 16 handicap. In Division B, Jim Hopkins won Low Gross with an 89, helped by a 180 yard holeout for an eagle on no. 8. Jim also shot the Low Net round of the day with a net 68 off a 21 handicap. Since only one prize is awarded to a player, Low Net went to Joop Schillemans with a net 74 off of a 20 handicap. We teed-off simultaneously on holes no. 1 and 10 – unfortunately, a fivesome was in front of us on the first tee, so the pace was somewhat slower than usual. Welcome to the high season in Chiang Mai! Even though the pace was slow, our members racked up some significant numbers of Stableford points. Kim Anderson followed his win last Friday by winning the most points on the front nine — 20 points, while Gerry Brimacombe won the back nine with 20 points as well. We had a three-way tie for first place overall with 36 points between Gerry Brimacombe, Stuart Leckie, and Calvin Davis (welcome back Calvin). On the countback, Stuart Leckie took first place with his par on the eighteenth hole following his second-place finish last Friday. Well done gentlemen! Thanks to everyone for coming out to share a very enjoyable day of social golf. This Friday 15 November, we will have our last monthly medal for qualifying to compete in the Monthly Medal’s Final Championship for 2013 on Tuesday 17 December. So far we have 24 members who have qualified by winning low gross or low net in Division A or B – their names are listed in the announcement on the CMSG News web page. 13 Members turned up this morning, on a bright, sunny day and for a change we, just beat a party of visitors to the first tee, so they had to go off the 10th!  It looks as though the high season is kicking in once again but we were not held up and everyone managed to finish their games within 4 hours.  Unfortunately, Stuart Duncan had to withdraw with an injured back on the back nine but will hopefully be fit for the next game. Today’s honours went to Kim Anderson with an impressive 37pts and second place went to Stuart Leckie with 34 pts.  Keith Taylor would have taken second place with 35pts but he did not enter the competition so, its good game Keith and sorry! Congratulations to all winners. We also welcomed back John Noyes who has returned from his summer travels.

Today’s game gathered 15 members, quite good since so many are on their way to Khon Kaen. Christian managed to get out of bed before the fish in his pond was awake. Driving on the empty roads one could see that not even the police is up at this ungodly hour. Anyway, it was a good group and all seemed to enjoy themselves, some more than others of course. Those who enjoyed it most were Joop Schillemans with 38 points, followed by Tom Berger and Stuart Duncan on shared second place with 36 point.

Fifteen members teed off on Monday at Lanna for a stroke competition on courses 3 & 1. With some of our regulars away at  the Issan Cup challenge the group was small but keen. When all the strokes were counted Peter Brown took first prize with a net 71. In second place Lester Twigden came home with a net 72. Playing  off the red tees David Stephens took third place with a net 74. Congratulations to all.

15 members entered the Stableford competition at Mae Jo on the day after the final leg of the CMSGs Annual Tournament at Doi Intananon, as many of our regulars took a day off from golf. Heinz and Anton joined to put in their cards toward establishing handicaps. We teed-off simultaneously on holes no. 1 and 10, and played fog for the first nine holes, then enjoyed the sunshine on the second nine. Young Silvan Schwarz had a good round to take first place with 36 points – keeping up the family’s winning ways; well done Silvan! Larry Richard has re-found his form after several months off and came in second place with 34 points. Joop Schillemans got 18 points on the front nine and ended up in third place with 33 points. Thanks to everyone for coming out to share a very enjoyable day of social golf. Next week, quite a few of the regular players at Mae Jo will be playing in the Isaan vs. Chiang Mai Challenge Cup in Khon Kaen, so we expect a light turnout at Mae Jo. Christian will act as Captain on Tuesday and Peter on Friday – thanks to them for their assistance.

A small crowd of ten players at Lanna which was not surprising since we are in the middle of the Annual Tournament. All three groups were finished by 12:30 which gave lots of time to enjoy the 19th hole. The winner of the day was Alan Gariano with 35 points followed by honourable mention Barry O who was NIC with 34 points, and third place Hiro with 33.

Next week is the monthly stroke competition on courses 3 & 1. Gassan16

Winner: Allan Gariano

Maejo, Friday 25.10.13

As we joined together for registration, a ‘chilly’ breeze was blowing. We teed-off under clear skies with a light, cool breeze. It warmed up a bit towards the end of the first nine, then we were lucky to have a cloud cover – all in all, a beautiful day for golf as we begin to move toward the cool season. After yesterday’s high turnout for the Annual Tournament leg at Gassan Khun Tan, we expected a light turnout. We had 13 members in the Stableford competition and two new members who are still establishing their handicaps. Frank Schwarz continued his hot streak to take third place with 32 points, playing with his son Silvan – welcome back Silvan – we like to see our younger members joining us to challenge us to play our best. “Young Jimmie” Catterson (75  yrs. old) stepped up to the forward tees to enjoy a good round earning 34 points to take second place. Well done Jimmie! And the BIG story was the brilliant round by Steve Metcalf that resulted in him winning first place with 36 points. Steve has only been back playing with us less than a month and we have all been impressed with the steady improvement of his game. Fortunately (for the rest of us), he leaves this weekend for six weeks of work offshore without golf, so it will open up opportunities for the rest of our members, until he can re-boot his game in December. Well done gentlemen. Thanks to everyone for coming out to share a very enjoyable day of social golf. Next Tuesday, 29 October, the 3rd leg of the Annual Tournament will be held at Mae Jo, with 37 CMSG members already registered. Members who have not registered to compete in this leg of the tournament are still welcome to join the one-day Stableford competition, but please be informed that you will play at the back of the field of competitors, whose groupings and tee-times for the Annual Tournament have already been organized by the Competition Committee. We will have lunch and awards for the one-day competition at the CMSGs Mae Jo clubhouse, affectionately known as the CaddyShack. Please note that we will commence teeing-off at 8:32 a.m. on Tuesday 29 October, so please register by 8:00 a.m. at the latest.

Maejo Tuesday, 22.10.13

Finally we enjoyed an overcast day of golf without rain and a bit of sunshine on the second nine holes.  We had a good turnout with 19 members and 2 guests playing in 2-person teams. We tried a new format of 9 hole Greensomes and 9 hole Scramble. The format called for at least 3 drives from each player on each 9 holes; handicaps were 25% of the combined individual handicaps for each 2-person team. The Greensomes format put a bit of pressure on the players after the best tee shot was selected, since it was alternate shots after that. Coming in at third place with a net 80 was the team of Jack Kuzina and Gerry Brimacombe – welcome back Gerry! The team of Joe Albright and newly-returned Larry Richard came in second with a net 74, while first place was won by an amazing performance by Frank Schwarz and Tom Berger with a net 63 on a gross 69 (3 under par). Well done gentlemen.

Survivor: Typhoon Nari — Golf at Mae Jo Situation: Typhoon Nari dumped rain on Chiang Mai throughout Thursday night, continuing right up until registration time at 7 a.m. on Friday. 14 members showed-up by 7 a.m. wanting to play. Since the rain continued relentlessly until 7.15 a.m., 5 members abandoned-ship and left 9 hardy souls to do battle together on the soggy fairways and soft greens of the Mae Jo Golf Club under conditions of lift, clean, and place on the closely-mown areas (not rough). Frank, Sylvan, and Tom took the lead into the Typhoon. This was the first time that the group following Frank actually saw his group after the 9th hole! We had some holes where the umbrellas were not used for the drives and second shots, but they were followed by more intensive precipitation requiring umbrellas on the same hole for chipping and putting. During the 18-hole round, two of the competitors withdrew due to the significantly challenging conditions of play, leaving only 7 thoroughly soaked competitors from the 14 members who showed-up that completed play for the competition. Thus, the attrition rate was 50% from show-up to completion of 18 holes of competition. The results represent the performance of the never-say-die members who finished their rounds – with shriveled-up hands that looked like they could have spent hours in a massage parlour! Results:  The tough conditions kept the players from shooting as near to their handicaps as usual. Frank Schwarz took first place with the most Stableford points; Steve Bjorge took second place, and Stuart MacFarlane took third place. We all highly enjoyed our golf in the rain, even though the conditions were challenging.  The general consensus is that rain is better than sunshine.

Maejo Tuesday, 15.10.13

It appears that the rainy season is over now and the cool season is approaching rapidly – we enjoyed beautiful weather under sunshine with a light breeze. We had a good turnout with 22 members in a 2-person scramble format, while Iain Craig, his son William, and Lennart Larsson played with us outside the competition. The format called for at least 6 drives from each player followed by both players hitting the remaining shots, selecting the best shot for the team; handicaps were 25% of the combined individual handicaps for each 2-person team. We had a tie for third place at net 68 between Craig Morris &Yung Beece and Jack Cooper & Stuart Macfarlane, won by the latter team on a countback. The Dutch team of Harry Nieuwland and Joop Schillemans had a good day, coming in at 65 net to take second place. The big winners were Frank Schwarz and Tom Berger with a net 64 on the day’s low gross score of 70 – great teamwork! Thanks to everyone for coming out to compete in our first 2-person scramble, which was enjoyed by all our members. Please remember to notify Frank or Jim of your teams for next Tuesday’s 2-person 6-6-6 competition: 6 holes alternate shots, 6 holes best ball, and 6 holes scramble on 22 October.

Lanna Monday, 14.10.13

Much to our surprise a small group of seventeen members and one guest came out for a pre-tournament game of stableford. We were happy to host Maejo Captain Jim who came out to check out the course. Some good news from the Lanna management after JJ Walker successfully negotiated with the ranking General for a 600 baht green fee/ caddy fee for next Monday the first day of the Annual. Lester Twigden took first place honours with 36 points closely followed by Prajat Bacchi with 35 points. David Stephens chased the front runners down to the wire and earned third place with 34 points. See Y’all next Monday.

Maejo Friday, 11.10.13

We were blessed by a beautiful day with early morning fog followed by sunshine with a light pleasant breeze on the second 9 holes. Players included 21 members, and our new member William Craig (Iain’s son) putting in his first scorecard. The format was individual Stableford competition. Following on his great performance last Tuesday, Steve Metcalf continued his good form by earning 33 points to take third place. Tom Berger continued his consistent good golf by earning 34 points to take second place. Finally, despite a dismal start with his head in a tizzy, Captain Jim Hopkins managed to bring in 36 points due to a strong finish to take first place. He requests that all players report to the Captain and register not later than 7 a.m. to relive his blood pressure prior to tee-off. We have several members (you know who you are) who consistently show up after the 7 a.m. registration deadline. This causes a certain amount of chaos in making the pairings during the final ten minutes prior to the first groups’ teeing-off – when some threesomes become foursomes, etc. As we go forward into the high season, the effect of late show-ups will be magnified upon all of our members, and we need to avoid significant re-pairings after 7 a.m. Thanks to everyone who played today for keeping up the pace – we managed to finish in about four hours. Today, Mae Jo starters informed Captain Jim Hopkins that it is most likely that they will not allow us to tee-off simultaneously from No. 1 and No. 10 in the future (high season). This is related to complaints from our members who completed rapid rounds after teeing-off on No. 10, and who then came around too fast – coming around to No. 1 expecting to tee-off immediately, while the starters have booked tee-times on No. 1 prior to that for other groups of their customers. We clarified that, while the global principle is that groups coming around to tee-off on No. 10 have priority, the opposite does not apply. This means that groups coming around after starting on No. 10 do NOT have priority to tee-off on No. 1, because the course has already booked and received green fees and caddy fees for many tour groups based upon their tee-off time on hole No. 1 throughout the high season. Please understand this phenomenon as we enter the high season. It looks like it will result in our 6-7 booked groups teeing-off on No. 1 throughout the high season. The result will most likely be that Frank’s first group will be having a late brunch and waiting for the rest of us to join them for lunch. Next Tuesday we will play a 2-person Scramble. If anyone has not yet notified Frank of your team composition, please do so as soon as possible. Have a nice week-end!

Maejo Tuesday, 08.10.13

We had a good turnout with 20 members, our newest member Graham Adams (fifth scorecard), and a guest, Greg. We enjoyed beautiful weather under sunshine with a light breeze. The day’s format was Stableford Nassau. Steve Metcalf recently returned from Indonesia to join us again and was in great form on the front 9 to win with 22 points – he also won all 4 caddy holes in his group; well done Steve!. On the back 9, we had 4 players scoring 18 points – on the countback, Jim Hopkins won with a bogie-par finish. The big story of the day was the brilliant performance by Stuart Duncan with 45 points to capture the overall 18 hole competition. Actually, he had the most points on both the front 9 and the back 9! This follows his win last Friday with 35 points. In addition to winning the overall Stableford, he received a handicap reduction of 5 strokes for his amazing performance. It is always great to see our members improving their games. Thanks to everyone for coming out to compete and for the camaraderie afterwards that made it an enjoyable day for all of us! Please remember to notify Frank or Jim of your teams for next Tuesday’s 2-person scramble, if you have not already done so. It should be a fun event.

Lanna Monday, 07.10.13

Winter is on the way and the snowbirds are moving South. There was a sighting of Mark Morris at Lanna at the 19th hole and Mike Ackland literally stepped of the plane into his golf shoes and shot a gross 90 in a jet lag fog. Welcome back guys. Nineteen members and three guests turned out for the monthly stroke competition and the honours were captured by the Ladies Division. Continuing her success without husband Keith in attendance Noi Taylor shot a net 67 for a first place win and topped second place winner Pranee Buckley by one stroke.  Honourable mention goes to the Men, Garry Walker, John Dalton, and Paul Coppens who managed a three way tie at net 71. Next week will be the last Monday before the first game of the Annual Tournament the following week and a chance to check out the conditions. See you there.

Maejo Friday, 04.10.13

We were fortunate to have another overcast sky for the first nine followed by sunshine on the second nine. Players included seventeen members, up-coming member Graham Adams, and Stuart Leckie’s friend Greg. Harry Nieuwland was a bit surprised to be in the money again, taking third place with 32 points. Stuart Leckie came in second with 34 points, while Stuart Duncan took first place (again) with 35 points. The pace of play was much improved today, partially because we played in threesomes. Thanks to everyone for keeping up the pace – we managed to finish in just over four hours. Next Tuesday we will play a Stableford Nassau competition – most points for front nine, back nine, and overall points. Have a nice week-end!

We were blessed by an overcast sky with a few sprinkles of rain and a light breeze – perfectly comfortable weather for golf. Twenty-two members and an up-coming member (Graham Adams) joined the monthly Best Ball net tournament. Today was Kim Anderson’s first day as a legal member, and he came in with a bang.

Our members showed their golf and team skills with 9 of the 11 teams shooting under par (net). We had a tie for third place between Christian & Roger and Stuart Duncan & Kim; on the countback, it was Kim’s bogey on number 18 that brought them in to take third place at 66 net. Taking second place was the team of Ted Taylor & Tony Guardino with a 64 net — well done. First place, with a great score of 62 net, went to the team of John Dalton and Steve Bjorge (who just retired the day before!). Welcome Steve – a great start to your retirement! For some unknown reasons, the final foursome came in about an hour after everyone else finished. This resulted in some good comaraderie and a few beers more than usual while we awaited the arrival of the winners.
Thanks to everyone for joining in the competition and helping to make it a socially enjoyable experience!
