Scramble December – North Hill

Thursday, December 18 we had our last Away Game of the year 2014 at the redesigned “Mezza Nine” now called North Hill.

All 32 Players made it on time for their tee times at a nice cool 19 degrees celsius. We were greeted by the new Golf Superintendent of the Golf Course which just started 2 days ago his new assignment. He has managed Golf Courses in Pattaya and Phuket before.

We teed of on split tees which guaranteed that we all finish more or less together. All teams finished their respective rounds in less than 4 hours. The course was in great shape, it is good to see that they cut the greens before the first tee off. So there was no morning dew on the greens and it fair to say that the greens all run the same speed. The fairways were as well freshly cut. It is for sure a Golf Course who is favorable to precision rather than length. The Course does not play that long but has sufficient obstacles in place to be in trouble if you try to go for distance. The greens are like rolling hills but the putt true and are flat within 3 feet around the Pin location.

There is also plenty of water around and it is advisable to ask the Caddy for the distance book each carries, especially if you play the course for the first time.

The Scoring was very good with only 6 shots separating the winning team from the team with the lowest Score.

The Wining team with a Net 61 was Don Bishop, Jack Kuzina, Willie Hopkins and Jim Hopkins

Winners

Tied for second place with a Net 62 was Ron Hill, Adam Jackson, Michael Kuzmich and Nigel Stubbs – Yui Schwarz, Ben Faipong, Corky Wood and Frank Schwarz

DSC00937 2nd2

Congratulation to the Winners and a big thank you from the Committee for coming out and competing.

This time we were invited by Don Bishop to have our after Golf presentation and reenacting of Golf shots at his wife “Big Tree Bistro”  were we enjoyed Beer for really fair prices and a Salad and Pizza Buffett for Baht 150. Again we want to thank Khun Nim for the very tasty food and the hospitality and the fact that she opened her place just for us (normally closed on Thursdays).

Competition Rules for SCRAMBLE

Each team consists of four players. All players can tee off at each hole. The nominated team captain then selects the best drive and marks the position (within a score card distance) with a tee peg (not nearer the hole). The other players then retrieve their balls. A minimum of three tee drives (only par 4 and par 5) per player is to be used. The Player whose drive is chosen cannot hit the second shot and is also not allowed to hit as a practice stroke. The remaining players then play within a score card distance of the tee-peg (not nearer the hole). Note! Golf balls shall be placed on closely mown areas and dropped if the chosen ball in play is in the rough or a hazard (one penalty shot). The third or forth shot can be hit by all team members.  All Par 3’s are played by all Team members. The above method of play is followed until the green is reached. On the green the same method applies. The chosen ball is marked and players putt from the same spot in turn. Each player must mark the ball after putting. Play continues -from each chosen position until the ball is holed. If a player misses the Putt and taps it in without giving his team members a chance to putt than this is the final score.  The score is the total number of shots from the chosen spots (including the tee shot). As for the Score calculation, the combined Handicap of all 4 players will be divided by 8 and that will be the team Handicap (numbers will be rounded up and down with .5 being the decider). If a team consist of only 3 players the divider in 6 and each player must have at least 4 drives counted for the team. At the end of the round the total for each hole is added together and the strokes received subtracted to give the total net medal score for the round. The winning team will be the one with the lowest net score. All other rules of golf apply to the “Ball in Play”. Rule 14.2. (assistance) will be ignored for the Club Scramble.

North Hill Score Card

We received a report from Bill Johnson who played with Roscoe Butler and friends from the US on November 28, 2014 the Course and had a Hole in One on the 17th:

“Gents,
In my first outing since laying off golf after a month-long hiatus to heal my injured forearms, I was asked to play at North Hill today with Roscoe Butler and two American friends, Jack Auten (Honolulu/Chiang Mai) and Allen Cates (Lafayette, LA).  We found the course to be quite difficult and even tricky in parts; the greens measured 9.5 but played much faster. Nothing seemed to stick on the greens. After a mostly taxing round with poor scoring, I hit my tee ball on 148-yard, par 3, no. 17, landing in front of the green and slowly rolling about 7 feet to the front pin location. Jack saw my ball disappear and commented ‘I think it went in’…and sure enough when I walked up my ball was nowhere to be seen elsewhere on or off the green. My caddie and I walked over to the pin and there it was lying in the cup.

The club said it was their first ace after reopening and that a signboard is being prepared to commemorate holes-in-one. My prize?  A mere free round of golf! The club hasn’t created special awards for aces yet and has not solicited sponsors either.

North Hill is similar to Koolpunt in the fact that all shots must be well considered and then executed… considerable water hazards lurk, many of which are not displayed on the map cards carried by the caddies. For the most part these are lateral hazards lying next to fairway edges.
