TEE IT FORWARD
June 22-23, 2013
Golf facilities nationwide
Do you wish your approach shot to the green was just a bit easier? Would you rather hit an iron into the green instead of a longer club? If you want to play faster and have more fun, go ahead and move up a set of tees this weekend! When you TEE IT FORWARD, you’ll hit more lofted irons into greens, putt for birdies and pars more often, and play faster and score better!
The world’s best players score well because they hit shorter clubs into the greens than you do. So why not join them — TEE IT FORWARD from a distance more suited to your game, instead from a back tee box that just doesn’t match up with your strengths and abilities.

PGA and USGA Step to new sets of tees in ‘TEE IT FORWARD’ initiative
May 24, 2011: To help golfers have more fun and enhance their overall experience by playing from a set of tees best suited to their abilities, The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association have partnered to support “TEE IT FORWARD,” which encourages all golfers to play the course at a length more appropriate for their average driving distance.
Tiger Woods ‘Teed It Forward’ wth President Obama
February 28, 2013: Though there are few witnesses to the much-heralded round between Tiger Woods and President Obama, the story is that Woods — as part of the friendly $5 wager made among the group — had to employ “TEE IT FORWARD” during the round.
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Both the PGA of America and the United States Golf Association have been advocating for some time a golf-friendly format known as “Tee It Forward.”
The idea is to have golfers move up one set of tees — or more — in order to derive more enjoyment from the game while also speeding up play.
Tiger Woods got to experience his own form of “Tee It Forward” recently.
Typically, this would not be an issue for any professional golfer, especially Woods, who hits it farther than all but a handful of players in the game.
But when he played with President Obama recently at The Floridian in Palm City, Fla., that became a condition of the proceedings.
Woods acknowledged Wednesday during the Honda Classic pro-am, during a brief discussion on the subject, that he was required to play from tees that measured 6,208 yards — or more than 1,000 yards shorter than PGA National will play for the Honda Classic — and hit driver.
“It was part of the bet,” Woods smiled.
Woods partnered with President Obama — they rode a cart together in 50-degree temperatures that seemed much colder, Woods said — and they played a $5 Nassau against Floridian owner Jim Crane, who also owns baseball’s Houston Astros, and outgoing U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.
For camaraderie purposes, but also because of the wager, Woods played it forward, and while he hit some great shots, he also had his struggles.
“It’s not that easy,” he said. “There’s nowhere to hit it from up there. The fairways get narrower and the holes bend.”
That apparently was of no concern to Obama, who in the days after their game together said that Woods “was on another planet.”
TEE IT FORWARD starting to gain traction
August 16, 2012: Tee It Forward is off and running, especially at private facilities. The big challenge ahead, industry officials say, is getting it implemented at more public courses and reaching less-than-avid golfers. The good news is, those casual golfers are likely the ones who could most benefit from playing from forward tees.
Golfers move up, having more fun teeing it forward
June 1, 2012: More and more golfers are expected to tee it forward and have more fun playing golf thanks to an expansion of the “TEE IT FORWARD” program. Initially introduced for a two-week period in 2011, TEE IT FORWARD is now a year-round initiative with a special focus in June.
Nicklaus, Johnson and Creamer encourage golfers to TEE IT FORWARD
April 3, 2012: Golf legend Jack Nicklaus, PGA Tour Professional Dustin Johnson and 2010 U.S. Women’s Open Champion Paula Creamer will return to serve as spokespersons for TEE IT FORWARD, a joint PGA of America and USGA initiative encouraging golfers to have more fun by playing from tees that better align with their ability.
PGA of America, USGA encourage golfers to ‘TEE IT FORWARD’
December 14, 2011: Following the successful pilot launch of TEE IT FORWARD in July 2011, The PGA and USGA are encouraging golfers to continue to tee it forward. More than 1,900 facilities registered in 2011 with an average of 123 golfers per facility (nearly 237,000 nationwide) playing from forward tees during the promotional period. Additionally, a survey of more than 3,000 consumers who experienced the program showed that 70 percent found their round of golf more enjoyable and more than 90 percent said they would recommend TEE IT FORWARD to a friend.
TEE IT FORWARD founder Adams knows how to make game more enjoyable
June 15, 2011: Barney Adams, the founder of Adams Golf, provided the concept that led to TEE IT FORWARD. His idea: By playing from forward tees, amateur golfers have the chance to play the course at the same relative distance as a touring professional. The playing field is leveled by giving golfers the chance to play from distances that are properly aligned with their abilities.
