Lanna 29.06.15

With the rain gone for a while and nice blue skis greeting the 20 CMSG and 1 guest at Lanna  this morning for their end of the month Stableford competition. We welcome back Kris Bell and Richard Roehi who just returned from the states and will be with us for a while. With the nice day came some nice scores as well with four player’s trying for second.  Keith Freeman, Mike Bilbin, Lawrence Nahlik and Yukio Doi all coming in with a total 36 points. After a quit count back using the back nine Keith took second leaving Mr. Doi in third. Our first place winner who just came back from the states and returning in style was Richard Roehi scoring 42 points. Congratulation to our winners.

Next Monday at Lanna will be Stableford competition with a twist, you will only be able to have three clubs plus your putter in the bag so pick your best clubs and come on out and have some fun.

21 members and one guest, Ian Kempsey, showed up for today’s Stableford Comp. Also, we had 3 new members in attendance, Diane Mayo, Soren Nielson and Kevin Gies, who are all establishing initial Handicap Indexes with us. Welcome to CMSG!

No birdies were made on #3 or #13 this last comp for June. Prize will carry over to July’s birdie hole which will be #12 only.

Some good scoring happened out there today under cloudy comfortable skies.

Taking 3rd place today with 39 points and 74 off the stick, Nigel Stubbs.

Coming in 2nd place was Craig Morriss with a solid 41 points and taking the 1st place prize with 42 points edging our Craig was yours’ truly.

Don’t worry, my handicap has plummeted 6 shots in the last 2 rounds. Fire me for lots of reasons but not this!!!

No comp this Friday as 26 of CMSG’s finest are at Highlands to defend the Chiang Mai Cup.

Wish us luck and next month’s event schedule will be out shortly.

Cheers!

Lanna, 22.06.15

On another very warm morning at Lanna 16+ 1 new member headed out for a Match competition against the Lanna course. Sorry to say only 5 golfers beat the course but it was very close for everyone else. We had a try at 2 with 1 to go between Ralph Hamilton and Kim Stogner. Kim lost out to Ralph in count back so he took third place leaving Ralph in second. Our first places winner was someone who rarely seems to find the winners circle was Haydn Patterson (Mr.H) who beat the course 5 with 4 to go, way to go Mr. H. Congratulations to our winners

21 members showed up for today’s competition including our in transit president, Frank Schwarz, and our newest member, Diane Mayo.

No birdies on #3 or #13 so the prize will double for next Wednesday’s last weekly competition for June. New birdie hole(s) will be announced soon with July’s schedule.

Taking the front nine with 23 points was your’s truly and winning the back nine after a shaky front nine was the always unflappable Stuart Duncan with 22 points.

Edging out Richard Brown for the overall today by 1 point was next week’s Chiang Mai Cup secret weapon, Anton Bujiis, with a rock solid 39 points.

Rub of the green in a nassau, Richard!!

Special thanks to Kuzie, Jim Hopkins, Rob McPhee and Diane Mayo for keeping me company till the bitter end when our shirts were finally delivered to the caddie shack at 3:30 after a promised 1:00 p.m. arrival!! The wonders of the Kingdom!

Have a great week end and hope to see you for next Wednesday’s stableford June finale.

2 MAN STABLEFORD BETTER BALL

Only 12 players came out today for above format but, lo and behold, one of those fine fellas was our own Pisshead, Don Bishop!! Welcome back, Don.

The even number made my job easy as Jim Hopkins drew the cards blind for today’s teams and wouldn’t you know it, Don got Craig Morriss and this

Uber team went around Mae Jo combining for a very solid 45 points. Finishing 2nd was the team of Jeff Crosthwaite and his partner, Nigel Stubbs

with a close 43 points. Close but no cigar.

Nigel, however, did claim the birdie pool today with a nice 4 on #13.

Congrats to all the winners and hope to see more of you on Friday for a stableford nassau comp.

Lanna, 15.06.15

Frist off I want to thank Keith Freeman for filling in for me while I was in the states. Thanks Keith.

We had a good showing at Lanna this morning 19 CMSG and 1 guest. As usual it was on the warm side but with a little breeze it was tolerable for the most part. Scoring was on the warm side too most points in the mid thirties since the competition for the day was Stableford.  We had a try for second place at 36 points between Gary Lyons and Mike Belbin. Mike won out on count back to take second leaving Gary in third. The overall winner was Gary Walker with 37 points. Way to go guys and Congratulation.

Next week at Lanna it’ll be Match play against the courses so come on out and see if you can beat Lanna.

Stableford

Another warm day at Mae Jo as 18 members showed up to play in today’s stableford comp. Scoring was above average with one notable exception. 4 players tied for 3rd with 34 points but were beaten by 1 point by Jomo MacDermott who finished all alone in 2nd place with 35 points (good math!).

But no one in the field had a snowball’s chance at 1st place today as Michael Kuzmich posted an exceptional 44 points to lap us all. Well done, Kuzie!

Despite the overall good scoring, no birdies were posted on #3 and #13 so the kitty continues to grow.

Come on out next Wednesday for a 2 man better ball stableford event and take a shot at the pool.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers!

          MY APOLOGIES. NO PHOTO TODAY.

MATCH PLAY VS. PAR

13 members and one guest came out this morning to challenge old man par at Mae Jo today and only the 2 studs pictured below were able to accomplish that feat. So, even though Harry tossed out Graham’s card thinking it was his own, it was agreed by those in attendance that today’s 1st place and only prize would be shared by Nigel Stubbs and Graham Adams, both with +3.

Well done, gentlemen!

No birdies on the designated holes so the pot continues to grow for #3 and #13.

See you Friday for a straight Stableford Comp. PROMISE!!!

Stroke

Today 18 CMSG members and one guest (Shannon Livingston) turned out to play courses 3 + 1 in a stroke competition. It was also nice to see some members that haven’t played Lanna for a while – Jim Hopkins and Mike Belbin. All groups finished in around 4 hours and there were some pretty good scores. Ralph Hamilton and Howard Aspin tied for 3rd place with net scores of 70. Ric Cameron was on form (except for the last hole) and took 2nd place with a net score of 69, but the overall winner was Kim Stogner with an impressive net score of 65. Sorry Kim, but that’s 3.5 off your handicap index.

STABLEFORD

Another warm day at Mae Jo found 13 members posting for today’s play. It seems that the higher the temperatures get the fewer members who post to brave the elements these days. Oh Low Season Blues!

No birdies today on newly designated holes #3 and #13 so the pot rebuilds after Kuzie’s theft on Wednesday.

Finishing today’s comp. in a tie for 2nd place with 36 points were Jomo MacDermott and Nigel Stubbs.

Taking 1st place alone with 37 points was your’s truly despite a missed backhanded putt of 10″ on his last hole.

It was so hot that we didn’t even bother to leave the shade of the caddie shack for today’s photo.

Have a great week end and hope to see more of you next Wednesday for match play vs. par.

Stableford Nassau

Low season is kicking into high gear as the temperatures are climbing and hearty golfers are decreasing. 17 members showed up today at Mae Jo with one of our fellows, Jack Cooper, having a little bout of heat stroke. Feel better, Jack. You tied for the back nine by the way with 17 points before you ran out of gas!

Also tying Jack on the back were Steve Bjorge and Rob Grootenhujis. Winning the front nine with 18 points was Lennart Larsen and today’s overall winner was Nigel Stubbs with 37 points.

The biggest birdie pool to date this year was captured by Michael Kuzmich, despite an up and down round, with a birdie on #3 on it’s 1st day of eligibility.

Congratulations to all today’s winners and see you on Friday for a straight stableford comp.

Tied for second place : Jeff Croswaith and Robert Green with both 37 Stableford points and  First place Jomo Mac Dermott with 38 points. Well done guys. Today no birdie holes but Jeff had 3 birdies on the front nine !!! Should we give the money to him?

We had 25 players including one guest. We teed off 4 groups from the first tee and 3 groups from the tenth. Again the weather was hot with only a slight breeze. Unfortunately our captain Mike Pattavina had to leave the course not feeling well. I hope he will recover soon.

Stroke Play Net

Perhaps the warmest morning to date as there was not a breath of breeze in the air today at Mae Jo. 14 members made it out today and depite the heat completed play in under 4 hours.

No one took advantage of Calvin’s generosity last Friday so the birdie pool will be 700 baht for the last crack at #s 9 & 18.

Scoring was mediocre at best and finishing in 3rd place with a net 76 was Nigel Stubbs.

Tied for 1st place with net 74’s were Steve Borge and Michael Kuzmich.

Come on out for Friday’s Stableford Comp and last chance to take this month’s birdie holes!

* ALSO, PLEASE CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR NAME IS ON THE LIST FOR JUNE 26TH’S CHIANG MAI CUP VS. SANUK SABAI @ HIGHLANDS.

CURRENTLY WE HAVE 19 PLAYERS SIGNED UP AND WE NEED 26!!!!

Lanna, 25.05.15

Another muggy Monday morning at Lanna with only 13 players venturing out to play. Perhaps others were afraid that it might rain. The course was in pretty good condition considering the recent rain and each of the 4 groups managed to finish in around 4 hours. This week the outright winner was Julian Wing with 37 Stableford points, but 3 players scored 34 points meaning that we had to invoke the countback system for other placements. Second place was awarded to Terry Redding with 21 points on the back 9, but Ralph Hamilton and David Urlwin-Smith were indistinguishable with back 9 points of 17 so they shared 3rd prize (although David should have been disqualified for wearing hideous shorts). Well done to all players anyway. Next week there will be no play at Lanna due to the June 1st holiday. June 8th has been booked for Stroke play on courses 3 and 1 (8:30am) so hope to see you all then.

STABLEFORD

The day after May’s away game at Alpine found 15 members posting for today’s event. The weather was quite a change from the last couple of months as our rounds began under almost cool cloudy skies. A couple of showers materialized later thankfully waiting until we were at the Caddie shack under roof to become one of the first real soakers of the season.

No birdies to report today so the prize grows to 600 baht thanks to today’s winner, Calvin Davis ( 42 points ), who graciously donated his prize back to the pool and also sponsored a few beers back at the shack while the rain fell.

Coming in 2nd with 37 points was Jeff Crosthwaite and finishing 3rd with 35 points was your’s truly.

Have a great weekend and go out Monday to Lanna to visit acting captain, Kieth Freeman, for another Stableford Comp.

2 MAN BETTER BALL NET

14 members and one guest came out to Mae Jo today under cloudy skies and as a result more comfortable playing conditions. Play also was completed in well under 4 hours so all in all a good day.

Taking 2nd place with a net 65 was the team of Joop  Schillemans and Jeff Crosthwaite.

Finishing 1st today with a sensational team effort of net 61 was the team of Craig Morriss and Lennart (Lightning) Larsson.

The birdie pool was also grabbed by Joop with a 140 yd. hole out on #18 for a net 1. It was a thing of beauty I am here to tell you.

See some of you tomorrow at Alpine and the rest this Friday for a straight Stableford comp.

NO RESULTS FOR 2 MAN BETTER BALL EVENTS!

Lanna, 18.05.15

The Committee wants to thank Keith Freeman who will be the substitute for Allan Gariano while he is away the remainder of May. Below is Keith’s match report:

It was another hot and sunny day at Lanna this Monday which probably explains why only 14 CMSG members turned up to play. The course was experiencing some dry patches and yet the greens were very much on the slow side due to the rain the previous day. Nevertheless, there was some pretty reasonable scores and prizes were awarded according to the Stableford Nassau method.

Christian Friis took first prize for the 18 holes with a Stableford total of 38. Your handicap is going down, Christian!

Julian Wing equaled Christian’s first 9 score of 18 so he took the prize for the front 9.

Howard Aspin managed to get some beer money from the kitty with 19 points on the back 9 after eliminating Ted Taylor and David Urlwin Smith on a count back.

Next week will be a standard Stableford event and the weekly calender has been revised accordingly. So please come and enjoy.

STABLEFORD

23 members came out today on a very muggy warm day.

No birdies were recorded on #9 or #18 so the prize grows for next Wednesday’s match play.

Good scoring overall and conditions with the exception of the heat were present at Mae Jo today.

Coming in a 3 way tie for 2nd with 36 points were Jimmy Catterson, Joop Schillemans and Kazou Mitsunaga.

Eaking out one more point at 37 and taking today’s comp. was Graham Adams.

Sorry  no photo was available for this report so just use your imagination.

Have a great week end.

Mae Jo, 13.05.15

Today we had on this hot day a total of 14 members and one guest coming out for the Match Play against the course format. Into the clubhouse came only 12 Players after Ric Cameron had problems after 3 holes with the Vertigo and Don Bishop gave into the heat after 9 holes. From the same group Jack Kuzina decided also on an early stop because of 3 Asian four Balls playing in front. Hats off to Lennart who stuck it out and completed all 18 holes.

As to the Winners (which must have played a different Golf Course). Tied for second place with a Score of +2 was Nigel Stubbs & Adam Jackson. And tied for first place was with a real good score of +4, Graham Adams & Michael Kuzmich.

Well done Chaps.

Lanna, 11.05.15

On another very warm sunny morning at Lanna 17 CMSG headed out on the course for a fun round of Stableford Competition. Numbers were on the low side because some of our Lanna golfers had headed south for cooler weather and some fun golf. Hope they didn’t get rained out on the courses they played. Some of our CMSG ladies where out on the course this morning and as always showed the men that Lanna isn’t all that hard for the most part coming in with some nice high points.  The only man to make it in the top three was Ralph Hamilton with 37 points to take third. Jumjim Walker had a very nice round of golf and came in with 40 points to take second. Ram Taylor was as usual in her good form and took first place with a high of 41 points. Congratulation s Ladies and you too Ralph for a good round of golf.

STABLEFORD NASSAU

Perhaps the steamiest day to date, 22 members competed in today’s above mentioned event at Mae Jo. It was so hot that Nigel Stubbs referred to me as Captain Wetback at the turn. To which I replied, ” Si Senor”.

Bad ethnic humor aside, the scoring today was pretty good by most.

#9 was birdied by Ric Cameron & Jeff Crosthwaite who split the pool. Much to the chagrin of Ric.

Winning the front nine today with 22 points was Nigel Stubbs and taking the back with 21 points was Stuart Leckie.

Taking the overall stableford with a blistering 42 points was Bob Green.

Congratulations to all today’s winners.

Wednesday’s comp. is match play vs. par.

STABLEFORD

Exactly 16 members( A captain’s dream) showed up today on a very steamy morning at Mae Jo for a straight stableford competition. Scoring overall was average perhaps because the tees on #5 and #9 are back to their full length. Who knows!

No birdies on designated holes #9 & #18 were made so the birdie pool prize will grow again on Friday.

Finishing 3rd with 36 points was Gerry Brimacombe. In second with 37 points was Adam Jackson and taking today’s 1st place honors was Michael Kuzmich with 38 points.

Well done, guys!

Gerry leaves us with a strong showing as he will be returning to Canada until next January. Bon Voyage!

But returning to our group is Gary Cooke back from his Ferrari duties. Welcome back, Gary!

See you on Friday for a stableford nassau comp.

Once again it was the first Monday of the month at Lanna and that means one thing Stroke Competition on the 3 & 1 courses. 17 CMSG came out to test their skill at stroke play on this very hot day.  As always some of the scoring was on the hot side too. Prajat Bacchi showed her two golf partners (Ted & Al) how easy it is to score low, with a gross of 94 that netted her a 71 to take third place. Julian Wing had a good round too to take second place with a gross 92 that give him a net 70. Our low golfer of the day who’s name seems to come up a lot these days was Keith Freeman with a great round of 93 that netted him a very nice 67 to take third place. Congratulation to the winners.

STUBBY’S STABLEFORD

Well, 21 players showed up for the 1st of what may or may not be a bi-monthly unofficial competition. Additional strokes ranged from 6 to 11 as   members went out with anywhere from 3 clubs ( Lennart Larsen) to 8 clubs. Most seemed to choose to go around with 5 or 6.

Anyway, I think most everyone found the format interesting and certainly it teaches some course management skills for future rounds. Time will tell.

So, the  standings today were as follows:

Tied for 4th- Adam Jackson & Craig Morriss with 41 points.

3rd place- Gerry Brimacombe with 42 points

2nd place- Mike Pattavina with 44 points

1st place- Jack Kuzina with 46 points

No birdies were made on the new designated holes for May ( #9 & #18 ) so that pool will double for next Wednesday’s plain old Stableford Comp.

Also, today we say hello to new member, Mike Belbin and we say goodbye to Heinz Olschner until October.

Have a great week end and get well Frank!!

15 members came out to Mae Jo this morning and with little outside play at the club made it around in just under 4 hours. The course was in great shape and the scores today reflected it.

Finishing in a 3 way tie for 2nd place with net 70 were myself, Jeff Crosthwaite and Michael Kuzmich.

All alone in 1st place today was Nigel Stubbs with a solid 69 (75 off the stick).

Nigel also took the last birdie pool for April with what I was told was a one foot putt on #5.

Birdie holes for May will be #9 and #18 which means this Friday at Mae Jo when we will also begin a bi-monthly Stubby Stableford competition.

Lanna, 27.04.15

On a very nice sunny morning at Lanna after a night a lite rain 21 CMSG headed out on the course for Stableford Nassau Competition. The course was in good shape. Some of the green were thought to be slow maybe from the rain or just maybe from being aerated at different last month. Who knows the golfers just had to adjust to them and with a little luck they did or did they. Looking at the scores some of them did and some didn’t.  We did have some good sores and if it had been regular Stableford Competition the Ladies would have taken second and third. Since it was Stableford Nassau Noi Taylor came out ahead on the front nine to take it with 21 points. The back nine went to Barry Ochitwa with 18 points. The overall total for the day went to the Old Hipper Ted Taylor who shot his handicap and ended up with 36 points. Congratulation to the winners.

Being the first Monday of the month next week we’ll be back to Stroke Competition on course 3&1. So come on out and try your luck at Lanna and see how low you can score.

TWO MAN  TEAM AGGREGATE STABLEFORD

14 members and 1 guest, Soren, a friend of Steve Metcalf’s showed up for today’s 2 man competition. A bit of a precursor to tomorrow’s better ball net event at Royal Chaing Mai. So with only 7 teams competing under partly cloudy skies this a.m. the 2 winning teams were as follows:

Taking 2nd place alone with 64 total stableford points was Yours’ truly and his partner, Christian Friis.

Running away with 1st place as some suspected after pairings were drawn was Nigel Stubbs and his partner, Jeff Crosthwaite with 69 total points.

And today’s other winner was Jim Hopkins who cleared out the birdie pool with a brilliant and loudly celebrated 3 on #5.

Congratulations to All and see you tomorrow at Royal Chiang Mai or perhaps Friday at Mae Jo for a Plain Old Stableford event.

Lanna, 20.04.15

What a wonderful day to play some golf at Lanna. It might have been on the warm side (HOT) but that’s just the weather here for the month of April. We did have a little breeze to keep things a little cooler for the most part  but not much. 20 golfers were on hand at Lanna, 19 CMSG which one of them is a brand new member Mark Davis from the good old US of A and 1 guest a friend of Robert McPhee came to see Lwe were all about.

The weather was hot and so was some of the scoring. We had a three way try for third place between Peter Brown, David Smith and JJ Walker. As usual David lost on count back but so did JJ leaving Peter all alone to take third place. Nothing is always easy as we had another try for first place between Ric Cameron and Lawrence Nahlik both having great rounds and scoring 43 points. Lawrence had a better back  nine with a total of 25 points to take first place leaving Ric in second place. Congratulation to our winners.

Next week a Lanna the competition will be Stableford Nassau so come on out and have some golfing fun.

Overall scoring was respectable and finishing in 4th place alone with 36 points was Ric Cameron.

There was a small turnout of 10 people in the competition due to the Pissheads Songkran Tournament.

David Rickard scored his 5th Hcp scorecard and has now a Phcp of 26. Congratulations David, you can now put in picking up my  your much awaited 100 baht.

Tied for the first place came Nigel, Dr.Steve and Jack K. Well done guys!!

*The above was contributed by our own dedicated handicapper, Harry Nieuwland, from his sick bed,. Thanks for picking up the slack for me, Harry.*

In addition to the results reported above, Nigel Stubbs made a beautiful down hill putt of around 14 ft. from above the hole on #5 to make birdie and take home the prize for our birdie pool. Also well done! Prize starts anew Friday.

Also the winners posted 36 points each. Post Pissheads, I guess.

In addition to the 10 members mentioned above, we also had 2 guests, Rob and John from New Zealand join us as well as David and Rob McPhee who had to scurry off after the round bringing the total # of golfers to 15. Better than expected post Songkran etal.

Exactly 24 members posted along with 3 guests ( Jim, John & Hack ) and our newest member, David Rickards, still getting his 5 cards in to make today’s total participation 28 golfers. With 5 groups going off #1 and 2 groups off #10 just about everyone finished in under 4 hours.

Scoring was pretty good throughout but 3 teams outpaced the rest.

Finishing in a tie for 2nd today with net 62’s were the teams of Jack Kuzina (not pictured below) and Harry Nieuwland as well as Yung Beece and Gerry Brimacombe.

Taking 1st place was the team of Jack Cooper and Rob Grootenhujis with a net 12 under 60.

Another guy basically jumping off the plane albeit for only a few days lapped the field today (see Steve B. below). Graham Adams, fresh off from zip lining the rain forests of Laos posted an impressive 43 points in taking 1st place today at Mae Jo.

Finishing in 2nd was our own handicapper, Harry Nieuwland, with 39 points. Harry just returned from a visit to Holland and then a couple of weeks in the Philippines.

Tied for 3rd were Lennart Larssen and Gerry Brimacombe (Gerry also just returned from the Philippines) with 38 points.

I detect a pattern here with the exception of Lennart. Anyway, congratulations to all of today’s winners including Frank Schwarz who took the cumulative prize pool with a birdie on #5 today. Pot will restart next week when we play 2 man teams best ball net.

So to all the 24 members who showed up today, have a great week end!

INDIVIDUAL STROKE PLAY-NET

Only back with us a few short days and Steve Bjorge comes out of the gate with a net 65 to take 1st place in today’s stroke play competition.

Finishing a distant 2nd with a net 70 was Jack Kuzina and in 3rd, Ric Cameron with net 71.

29 members showed up on this April’s fools day and the joke was on us. Well done, Steve!

First day for the new designated birdie holes (#5 & #15 ) and as I suspected, the pot will continue to grow. No birdies for those of you playing at home.

Back to straight stableford on Friday.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers.
