North Hill, 29.07.16
The wet season is obviously in full swing and even though it was raining I thought I had better front up and while admittedly I did not take my golf clubs out of the car I was surprised to find a half dozen members keen to play. So shamed into it I grabbed my clubs out of the car and by tee off time there were 8 members eager to go and the rain had eased to light showers and believe it or not we were not the only groups out there, I think the Japanese have discovered the course. So it was only umbrellas rather than full wet weather gear and I must say the course plays very well in the wet.
The winner today in a stableford event was Shaun Stewart with 37 points, Peter (Smiley) Haddon was second with 35 points and Garry Walker third with 34 points.
Mae Jo, 29.07.16
The day started with torrential downpours which made all members arriving at the Course wait to pay their Green Fees waiting if the weather would improve prior to the Tee off. At around 07:50 the rain was merely noticeable and we decided to give it a go. All 15 members made it around in good time without getting wet, the rain stopped after the first 2 holes.
At the Club house we said hello to our returning long time member Mr. B.
We also wished Nigel Stubbs a Happy Birthday.
Ken Nalder won the Birdie hole #12 with a chip in.
The Winners of todays Stableford competition were:
Tied for 3rd place with 32 points was Steven Bjorge and Robert Green. In 2nd with 36 points was Frank Schwarz and todays Winner with 41 points was Keith Taylor.
Please remember that the Mae Jo Golf Course will be closed and we will be playing at 08:22 on Wednesday at Royal Chiang Mai and at 08:30 on Friday at North Hill.
Inthanon, 27.07.16
9 golfers attended today and the course presented itself magnificently. Blue skies,a touch warm, and underfoot lush and green.
Despite this there were several putting woes but all in all a very enjoyable day.Best of the bunch was Alan Gariano with Barry Ochitwa a very close second.
Mae Jo, 27.07.16
Today 24 members joined the Stableford competition in Mae Jo. It was a very nice clear day on the warm side but all groups managed to get around in good time.
In some other news, we have placed on the Website already the announcement for our Away Game on August 18th (Thursday) at the Gassan Khuntan, 1.200 Baht incl. Green Fee, Caddy and Cart + a 100 Baht Voucher.
Today Winners, in 3rd place Julian Wing with 37 points, in 2nd place Diane Mayo with 38 points and another strong showing from Iain Craig in 1st place with 39 points.
Lanna, 25.07.16
A splendid day for golf and 13 CMSG members arrived to play at Lanna this Monday morning. A reasonably quick round, even though the couple ahead of us for the first 9 holes were in picnic mode.
Barry Ochitwa deserves a special mention because of his eagle on the 18th par 5 which gave him 6 points – unfortunately not enough to take first prize.
In 3rd place was Lennart Larsson with 33 points, Barry Ochitwa came second with 35 points, but the overall winner was Keith Freeman with 36 points. See you all next week for lovely Stroke Play around courses 3 and 1.
Maejo, 22.07.16
This Friday at Maejo we had (14) members teeing off and competing in a Stableford competition. Everyone arrived on time and subsequently we had an on schedule tee-off with all of the groups teeing off on # 1 tee box. At the last minute the number (4) group teed off # 10 tee box and lucky for them that group completed their respective round ahead of all the groups teeing off # 1 tee box. The reason being was that a 5-ball and an extremely slow 4-ball teed off of # 1 ahead of our groups.
On a positive note we all completed our rounds in approximately (4) hours under rain less and overcast skies and at times hot and humid conditions.
Today’winners are as follows:
- First Place: Nigel Stubbs with (37) points
- Second Place: Diane Mayo and Michael Kumich sharing the honors with (36) points
- Third Place: Steven Bjorge with (35) points
Congratulations to all of today’s winners!
North Hill, 22.07.16
There were 11 starters today in a stableford competition, 10 members & one visitor, not a bad turn out after the big day at Green Valley yesterday. Better weather today with broken cloud cover and even a little sunshine. As usual the course was in lovely condition considering all the rain we have had but boy does that water eat up the balls (I don’t want to talk about it).
Shaun Stewart was our winner today with 35points and is hitting the ball very well, next was Soren Nielsen with 32points and tells us he is back as a regular now and in third place was Keith Freeman with 30 points who has been having quite a good run of late. Well done all and yes the captain did remember to get a photo this week.
Green Valley, 21.07.16
On a morning that saw torrential rains in most parts of Chiang Mai we had (30) members out of the (38) members that registered for this month’s away game) all arriving on time and with some slight modifications to the pairing we all teed-off on schedule. Of the (8) no shows (5) gave us prior notice of their decision not to play.
In addition, and on a bright note, (3) of our members each won a sleeve of golf balls (Pro V1) during the pre-match putting contest sponsored by Green Valley.
Continuing on the wet conditions it was still raining prior to our 8:10 tee-off time but at a decreasing rate and upon our first groups teeing off the rain subsided to a light drizzle. Eventually, the rain stopped making it another great day on the links especially on such a great course as Green Valley. After the match we all headed to the dinning room to turn in our score cards and enjoy a excellent buffet.
Relative to the winners today’s match was Stableford with the followings results:
- Sharing 1st place with (39) points each was Diane Mayo and Iain Craig
- We also had a tie for 2nd place with Pranee A. Buckley, Ric Cameron, & Lennart Larsson with (38) points
- In 3rd place with (36) points was Rob Grootenhuijs
Great scoring under the wet conditions! Hats off to all of the above winners and thanks to all those who participated under the initial pre-match wet conditions.
We look forward to seeing everyone again at our next scheduled away game being held at Gassan Khuntan on August 18, 2016.
Inthanon, 20.07.16
7 players joined up for an enjoyable game this morning, with smiley taking 1st place, and Lennart a close second.
Mae Jo, 20.07.16
STABLEFORD NASSAU
Exactly 16 members came out to Mae Jo today including our own returning Bronx Bomber, Dennis Byrne. Welcome Back!
#12 went birdie less again so that prize now becomes considerable for Friday’s comp.
So with Pro Na’s permission all 4 four balls went off #1 at 7:45 and completion of play was under 4 hours. Even the Byrne/Bishop group with a pit stop at the turn as no beer was being served this Buddha day made it in.
Taking the front 9 with 20 points was Nigel ( Stubsen ) Stubbs and winning the back 9 after his groups quest was attained at the turn was Dennis Byrne with 21 points.
But taking the overall prize today was tomorrow’s Green Valley organizer, Jack Kuzina, with a solid 39 points and a blob on #18.
Well done and congrats to all today’s winners.
Lanna, 18.07.16
Not sure what happened today, but only 8 existing members and 2 new members appeared at Lanna for a rather slow and subdued “Nassau” round with some seriously low Stableford scores. Overall winner was Keith Freeman with only 30 points and the 1st and last nine’s went to Jack Kuzina and Allan Gariano with 14 and 15 points respectively. Needless to say that the new members Leon and Dave struggled as well. We all need to get some rest before Thursday’s away game at Green Valley. Next Monday will be the usual Stableford format at Lanna and hopefully a few more regulars will venture out again.
North Hill, 15.07.16
There were 10 members and two visitors playing in a stableford event today. Overcast skies made conditions fine for the front 9 but the cloud broke away and the sunshine took its toll and some were dragging their feet by the time they got back to the clubhouse. Two groups completed in good time but the third group was lagging some two holes behind but at no disadvantage to anyone and they say they were having a good time and that folks is what this game is about. The winner today was Peter (Smiley) Haddon who had 37points followed by Ralph Hamilton with 35points in his last game before returning to Canada and returning via Europe for a two month holiday. Tied in third place was Shaun Stewart and Brian Heuston with 33points.
Captain was enjoying the good food, drinks & conversation and once again forgot to take a photo, sorry guys.
Maejo, 15.07.16
STABLEFORD
For the 1st time in many weeks your captain is writing this report just hours after today’s comp. Will wonders never cease!!
For the 2nd time this week, 24 members came out under overcast skies and 6 four balls teed off promptly at 8 a.m. Unfortunately caddie training began at 9:30 a.m. which added a few extra minutes to the 3 groups off #1. MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS’ PRIVILEGES????
Anyway play was completed in just over 4 hours and #12 again went without a birdie.
We had a tie for 3rd place today between Jan Jumelet ( apologies Jan ) and Andy Galwey with 34 points apiece. Kudos to you both for donating to Craig’s fund for Caddie Mae after the recount. CHEERS!
In second alone with 35 points was John Laidley and taking today’s comp with 37 points was Bob Green.
Congrats to all today’s winners and have a great week end!!
Don’t forget, next weeks away game sign up deadline for Green Valley is approaching so please e mail Jack soonest if you wish to attend!!!
Inthanon, 13.07.16
Hi, today we had 7 players at INTHANON, the scores were very close. Barry Ochitwa was first, Lennart Larsson and Ralph Hamilton tied for second. The weather was very humid and hot, but luckily no rain, It was nice to see Kieran back from his vacation looking strong and healthy but unfortunately while playing he pulled a muscle in his shoulder, but like a good Irishman, he soldiered on.
Maejo, 13.07.16
This Wednesday we had (23) members and (1) guest teeing off at Maejo for the start of our monthly stroke play. The weather was perfect for golf as we had mostly overcast skies and slight breezes. Also, with the absence of rain for the past day or so the course was in excellent conditions as all the fairways were dry and the greens running as normal.
It appears that Stoke plays adds more pressure on most of the members as during this format you can not pick-up as in the Stableford competitions. In summary this resulted in approximately 6-7 players disqualifying themselves.
As far as the winners circle Robert (Bob) Green came in 3rd place with a net (74) and Steve Bjorge scoring a net (73) to take 2nd place honors. Our 1st place winner today was Andy Galwey firing a blistering net (67). Hats off to all of today’s winners. Hope to see everyone this Friday at Maejo.
Lanna, 11.07.16
The conditions at Lanna today weren’t too bad after the yesterday’s rain, but the heavens opened again at about 11:30am causing problems for the 21 players who were all still out on the course. A couple of people didn’t finish, but there were some pretty good scores of those who did, especially considering the downpour.
North Hill, 08.07.16
There were 12 members playing a stableford round today. Hot and Humid as usual but cloud cover helped provide an enjoyable round of golf.
The winners were Camilla Dwyer & Peter (Smiley) Haddon with 37 points and the runner up was Shaun Stewart with 36 points. No problem for these guys on a tough course, all enjoyed the challenge.
Power outage meant that we had to travel for food but most of us found the Bavarian Resort to be a suitable replacement with cold beer and eventually lovely food enjoyed by all. Look forward to seeing you all next week.
Mae Jo, 08.07.16
Today was another nice but humid day with a cloud cover for most of the morning. 24 Players today competed in a Stableford format.
Tied in 3rd place was Yung Beece, Barry Ralston and Don Bishop with 33 points. Alone in 2nd place was Adam Jackson with 34 points and todays Winner with 41 points was Bob Green.
Congratulation to all Winners.
Frank

Inthanon, 06.07.16
It was a reasonably overcast day at Inthanon this Wednesday but still quite humid and damp. The greens were wet and sandy causing a lot of muttering, but the course looked pretty good and 10 CMSG members had a quick enjoyable round before lunch.
There was a tie for first place using the NOMADS handicapping system meaning that Kim Stogner and Keith Freeman (with 35 points each) have had their NOMADS handicaps reduced by 2 shots.
That’s the last time that they will win down there for a while.
Mae Jo, 06.07.16
We had a complete cloud cover the whole morning during our round with some light rain for about 10 minutes. Todays format was a Stableford Nassau. We welcomed back after a long time away Rick Gregory who will be joining us more frequently. In total we had 21 players enjoying todays condition. The Captain decided on a Lift Clean and Place through the Green on the short mowed areas.
Diane Mayo won the front with 22 points, the back was won by Rob Grootenhuijs with 21 points and the Overall Winner with 39 points was Graham Adams.
Congratulation to todays Winners, see you on Friday for a Stableford competition.
Frank
Lanna, 04.07.16
It was a nice day for golf at Lanna today and we had a good turnout of 21 members. Our latest member is Leon Smiler from NZ (not to be confused with “Smiley” obviously) who submitted his first card.
A few of our CMSG members who usually play at Maejo found the Racecourse Nine a bit tough, but then again we all find that nine rather challenging sometimes especially since it is always stroke play.
There were 5 winners today: Jack Cooper scored a net 76 to take 3rd place whilst Camilla Dwyer and “Smiley” tied for second place with net scores of 75.
The winners today were Julian Wing and Brian Heuston who tied with net scores of 71.
Congratulations to all winners, and see you all next week for the usual Stableford thrash around courses 1 and 2.
North Hill, 01.07.16
There were 15 bright eyed and bushy tailed starters for todays stableford round in what some might call ideal conditions for golf in Thailand. At last 12 members for the POY competition, two prospective new members Kai & Dave and one past member Steve who incidently had a round that would have won the day but we still can’t talk him into rejoining the club. It was nice to see the ladies joining in and they all seemed to enjoy the day so we hope to see them back again. The outright winner today was Christian Friis with 44 points, next came Shaun Stewart with 34 points and then a tie with Barry Ochitwa & Keith Freeman with 32 points.
Well done everyone and hope to see you all again next week.
Mae Jo, 01.07.16
Today with much nicer weather 31 players came to join the Stableford competition played today. It was not as spectacular regarding the results but nevertheless we had some good scoring. We wish Jim Hopkins happy holidays as he departs to the US for 6 weeks.
We had Diane Mayo , Silvan Schwarz and Bob Green tied for 3rd with 35 points, alone in 2nd was Graham Adams with 38 points and todays Winner with a Gross of 77 and his personal best was Yung Beece with 43 points.
Congrats to all Winners.
