Inthanon, 30.11.16

After a 2 weeks absence Nomads scoring and handicap adjustments Competition resumed. Nine members played including a welcome return to Gary Burke who has spent the Summer in Canada. The course played well but the greens were fast and many scores were affected by that. Not so Peter Haddon who I had the pleasure [! ?] of playing alongside.Smiley tore the course apart with 9 pars and very few putts. Gary Burke celebrated his return with a score of 33,three points  behind Smiley. Well done both of you.

Apologies to todays 19 members for any confusion. Captain Kuzie was clearly still on the Beer Laos Dark when I thought he was back in Chiang Mai!

Stableford Nassau was the format, and it was a slow round as high season kicks in with the first group completeinmg in just under four and a half hours.

Sharing the back nine were Andy Galwey and Frank Schwarz. Sharing the front and overall, with 38 points were Calvin Davis and John Noyes.

A reminder that we start the high season night shift on friday, please register by 6.30am, thank you.

Lanna, 28.11.16

There were 17 members and 1 guest for the regular Monday morning Lanna Stableford session. So, 5 groups started teeing off at just after 8am for what seemed like an eternity – almost 5 hours for some groups. Scoring was a bit on the thin side and disastrous for a few, but here are the results. Curtis Nickel and Lawrence Nahlik tied for 3rd place with 32 points each, Allen Norris managed to come in 2nd with 33 points, and Kim Stogner got 1st place with 36 points. You will notice that David Urlwin-Smith is in the photograph – this is not because he was photobombing; it’s because he won the newly instigated Birdie Hole #8. Well done to all winners.

There are no Monday Sports Days during December, but I have been assured that the discounted rate will be available to CMSG members for the 4 Mondays of that month. Next week is therefore still scheduled to be Stableford on Courses 3+1 using special scorecards. See you all then.

Mae Jo, 28.11.16

Perfect golfing weather greeted 14 members and one guest for a stroke play event today.

Tied for second with a nett 74 were Ronny Pieters and Ken Nalder. Way out in front today was Tom Berger with a magnificent net 64! He should look happier in the photo but I think he has realised he has just lost two shots!!

Mae Jo, 25.11.16

Today we had 24 members and one guest for today’s Stableford competition.

As the course was busy all seven groups teed off on the first. The first groups completing in just over 4 hours.

In third place today was Ken Nalder with 36 points. Sharing second were Gerry Brimacombe and Nigel Stubbs with 37 points. First with 39 points was Frank Schwarz.

North Hill, 25.11.16

Another great day for golf at North Hill today with 16 members arriving ready to lose their balls in the water-swelled canyons or perhaps hit the correct fairway from the tee-box for a change (Leon?). One member had to retire due to a bit of heat-stroke but the remainder finished in around 4.5 hours.

Scoring was quite varied today but the winner’s podium contained Soren Nielson with 33 points (3rd), Ralph Hamilton and Brian Heuston with 36 points (Tied 2nd), but today’s outright winner was Keith Freeman with 41 points.

There was nobody on the course last Wednesday and very few apart from the 4 CMSG groups today, yet the lovely girls behind the desk have informed me that they are busy next week and that our usual times have been taken. So I have booked 7:50, 8:00, 8:10, and 8:20 for December 2nd and I will be grouping members as they arrive and sending them off earlier than normal. See you all then.

Lanna, 21.11.16

It was yet another lovely morning for golf at Lanna this Monday and 13 members turned up eagerly eyeing those prestigious POY points for the new period. It was a reasonably quick and dry round for the 4 groups but the course didn’t seem to play too easily for some reason.

Nobody took out the 8th Birdie hole so this will accrue again to next week. The Stableford score winners were as follows: In 3rd place – Keith Taylor (34); in 2nd place – John Noyes (35); and in 1st place – Soren Nielson (37). Look forward to seeing you all next week.

A slight chill greeted 16 members for today’s Stableford event, (a Thai chill not a Europen one!).

welcome back to Jeff Crosthwaite after his recent travels.

Todays result saw Nigel Stubbs in third with 34 points, Graham Adams one point better in second place. Today’s winner was tied with 36 points were Diane Mayo and Jim Hopkins, congratulations.

North Hill, 18.11.16

Today there were 14 members present at North Hill and conditions were perfect for golf. Two three balls and two four balls hit off on time. Once again the birdie hole was number 7 and unfortunately no one managed to claim it so it again snowballs for next week and remember that you have to be paid up in the game to have a chance at winning.

I will be away until the end of January and I would like to thank Keith for looking after the venue while I am away but I would ask that anyone who could support him in his endeavours to please do so as he is also looking after Lanna.

The good news for North Hill members is that whatever price you paid to become a member that will be the price for your renewals forever, wonderful no price increases. Once again the course was in wonderful condition and the greens were running true.

The winners today were Ralph Hamilton & Camilla Dwyer who tied with 40 points.  Ralph says he is happy to be in the winning group once again but this time at the front end rather than in the placings, Camilla who has just survived the visit of family in country and suffering the withdrawals of no golf was obviously glad to be back in the game.  Coming in third place was Brian Heuston who insisted that winners are grinners and should pay the family bill in the clubhouse.

Mae Jo, 18.11.16

For a real nice day 24 players came out today to play a Stableford event at Mae Jo. Tied for 2nd place with 35 points were Jack Kuzina and John Noyes, three players came in with 36 points for 1st place, Ken Nalder, Frank Schwarz and Jan Jumelet.

Ken Nalder started his round with an Eagle 2 on the first hole.

Chiang Rai Cup – Waterford, 16.11.16 (final leg)

This Wednesday we held the final championship round of the “GMSG Chiang Rai Cup” at the beautiful ” Thailand’s Augusta of the North” Waterford Valley Golf Resort.  After a hearty pre-evening meal at a new “Indian” cuisine restaurant and a few post meal liquid refreshments most members sojourned for the evening in order to be completely rested for the next’s day’s final leg of the Chiang Rai cup.

Prior to our on schedule 9:00 am tee-off we were experiencing heavy fog conditions that eventually burned off subsequently resulting in sunny and blue skies for the majority of our round with a few clouds to help cover the hot late morning sun.

The pre-favorite winners, based on the their 1st leg results, teed off first followed by the remaining groups all formed based on yesterday’s results.  Upon completing this final leg we had some surprising results as a couple of the front runners fell by the wayside opening up opportunities to other players.

For reference, as I was inputting the scores, a few of the members were predicting  and as they say “counting there money prematurely”  as the final resulted were not tabulated!

Low and behold we had a few surprises on the final leg as can be noted in the following results table:

The top (5) finishers:

  15-Nov-16   16-Nov-16
Player Santiburi Stableford Points   Waterford  Stableford Points   Total Points
John Noyes 40   32   72
Lawrence Nahlik 30   42   72
Graham Adams 36   35   71
Jomo Mac Dermott 34   36   70
Craig Morris 32   37   69

As noted above our sleeper player today was Lawrence Nahlik who posted a fantastic final round score of (42) points tyings yesterday’s score of (42) poted by Gerry Brimacombe.   Lawrence’s achievement resulted in a tie for 1st place with John Noyes both scoring a 2-day (72) points and capturing the 2016 Chiang Rai Cup!

Hats off to all of today’s winners.

A new “Chiang Rai” trophy is on order as Gordon Langtry refuses to part with the existing trophy as it was the only award he ever achieved.  Hearsay is, the year Gordon  won there were only (2) competitors with Gordon keeping score for both players as the other player had touble counting.

Mae Jo, 16.11.16

Today we had the minimum number of 12 players for the POY. We hope for a better turn out on Friday unless the Chiang Rai players are all tired. Anyway todays scoring was with one exception on the low side. 4 players were tied for third with 30 points, Jim Hopkins, Tom Berger, Michael Kuzmich and Julian Wing. In second with 32 points was Frank Schwarz. Todays Winner with 39 Stableford points was Paul Brunning.

Congratulations to all Winners, see you on Friday.

Chiang Rai Cup, 15.11.16

This Tuesday was the first leg of the 2016 Chiang Rai Cup where (15) members and (1) guest all arrived on time for an early tee-off at Santiburi.  It should be noted that most of the members enjoyed a pre-evening meal at the famous Fahrenheit 71 resturant in Chiang Rai.  As per the norm everyone stated that there meal was excellent.

Getting back to the golf we all teed off on schedule under clear skies to start the first leg of this championship.  We implemented the “Lift, clean, & place” rule based on the heavy rains in the area the previous day.

Relative to the scores and results we had a number of significant great rounds of Golf.  Taking 4th place honors with (36) points was Graham Adams with 3rd place honors going to Leon Smiler with (38) points.  2nd place today goes to John Noyes with a highly respectible score of (40) points.  Today’s 1st place winner was Gerry Brimacombe posting a fantastic score of (42) points.  Hats off to all of today’s winners!

The 2nd and final leg of the Chiang Rai cup will be played at Waterford tommorrow with a scheduled tee-off of 9:00 am.  It appears that today’s 1st and 2nd place winners have a substancial lead and are considered favorites to win the overhall 2-day total stabelford points.  Lets see what happens after tommorrow’s round as eveyone know anything can happen in Golf!

Mae Jo, 14.11.16

Even with the Away Game tomorrow at Santiburi and Waterford on Wednesday we had 11 players at Mae Jo today. The results were okay. Surprisingly the temperature during the day is still very much on the warm side. It should be getting cooler soon.

As to the results, in third place with 33 points was Andy Galeway, tied for 2nd was Jim Hopkins and Ken Nalder with 34 points and the Winner with 35 points was Ronny Peters.

Congratulations to all Winners and see you on Wednesday.

Lanna, 14.11.16

It was a good day for Lanna golf today. The starter let our 3 groups go off at around 8:10am and we all had uninterrupted rounds of about 4 hours duration. The weather was perfect, the caddies were enjoying themselves (in my group anyway), and the course conditions were pretty good considering all of the recent rain.

There was only a small turnout of 10 members today and 3rd place was awarded to Kim Stogner (again?) with 32 points. In 2nd place was hungover Dave Beck with 33 points, but 1st place went to the Captain Keith Freeman (who is definitely overdue for some better scores) with 34 points.

Welcome back to David Urlwin-Smith who was in the UK for a while, and good to see Allan Gariano after the game who assures us that he will be playing again in a few months’ time.

North Hill, 11.11.16

Rained most of the night and was torrential at 6am so it was not surprising that only 8 turned out for golf today, but luck was with us as by 8am it was nothing more than a light sprinkle even though heavily overcast skies threatened more rain which thankfully did not arrive.  We did have lift clean and place for the round thinking that even North Hill could not stand up to the recent downpour but all agreed after the round that it was not necessary on the day.

The birdie hole was announced as hole 7 and that it would remain that way until some one got lucky and takes it out in our Friday event, unfortunately no one was up to the task today.  Stableford event as usual and today’s winner was Yung Beece with 37 points, runner-up was Lawrence Nahlik with 36 points and in third place was Ralph Hamilton with 34 points.

Remembrance Day 2016 and we shall remember them.

Mae Jo, 11.11.16

14 members arrived in dry weather this morning, remaining dry until tee off when heavy rain persisted for the first eight holes. Fortunately it then dried up for the remainder of the round for most players.

We stopped play at 11am and held a minutes silence.

Today was a straight Stableford, tied for second with 33 points were Tom Berger and Michael Kuzmich. Tied 1st with 35 points were Kenny  Jones and Nigel Stubbs.

Mae Jo, 09.11.16

This Wednesday we had (15) members partiscipating in a Stableford Nassau competition under the leadership of our new Maejo Wednesday captain Michael ( Kuzie ) Kuzmich.  While the majority of the Chiang Mai area was experiencing heavy rainfall we completed out round rain free but at times somewhat hot conditions.

Relative to the results Robert Green won the first nine with (18) points with Captain Kuzie and Ken Nalder sharing the back nine honors with (19) points each.  Our overall winner today was Diane Mayo posting an most impressive score  of (41) stableford points.  Congradulations goes out to all of today’s winners!

No photo shoots were in effect today but we all know what today’s winners look like!

We look forward to seeing our members this coming Friday at either North Hills or Maejo.  Also, as previously noted next week we will be playing for the Chiang Rai cup!

Lanna, 07.11.16

Only a small turnout today with 7 members, 1 new member (Kenneth Rosell) and 2 guests. And welcome back to Allen Norris who should be with us for the next 3 months. We played courses 3 and 1 and it was a rather long 5 hour round for the last group, but it was this group that produced our winner – Kim Stogner with net 67. In second place was Mark Morris with net 73. See you next week for Course 1+2 Stableford.

Maejo, 07.11.2016

The inaugural Monday meeting at Mae Jo was a great success. We had 18 members join the Stableford event, thank you all. The weather was favourable with a slightly cooling breeze although the conditions were damp due to early morning dew and watering.

The results obviously favoured those off the red tees today!! Tied for third was Ronny, John and Nigel with 33 points. Harry was second with 35 points but today’s winner with a great 40 points(26 on the front nine alone) was Rob Grootenhuis.

Thank you all once again for a great day.

Maejo, 04.11.2016

This Friday we had (24) members and (2) guests playing in our Friday’s Stableford competition event.  We all teed off on schedule from both the 1st tee box and the 10th tee box under cool clear skies.  The early morning cool conditions subsided overtime as the sun rose resulting in somewhat hotter conditions but, still a great weather wise day to be on the links.

Relative to the winners please note the following:

3rd  place:     Bob Sheldrick  (34) points

2nd place:     Ron Peters (35) points

1st place:       A tw0-way tie being shared by Graham Adams and Nigel Stubbs both scoring (36) points

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening at our “Annual Awards Party!

Also, please note that this coming Monday (November 7, 2016) is the official start of our Monday competition at Maejo.  From this point forward we will play every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Maejo.  For reference Nigel Stubbs will be the captain on Monday and Friday with Michael (Kuzie) Kuzmich being the captain on Wednesdays.

North Hill, 04.11. 2016

Today at North Hill there were 14 members and one guest, Scott Lumsden submitting his 2nd card for handicap.  Nice to have Ans with us today also and Ted Taylor getting back in the swing. All arrived on time and we actually got away a bit early and were the first people on the course for the day which was fortunate as 72 were booked in for the mornings golf.  Random draw saw one 3 ball and 3 four balls head out with the 3 ball in the club house half hour before the first 4 ball.  Course in good shape and weather almost perfect if a little on the warm side for some. Greens were running fast today.

The captain forgot to restart the birdie hole after the annual tournament so that will begin again next week.  Nothing in the kitty anyway as it was taken out by Brian before the annual.  A pity because there were four birdies today on three different holes.  The winner today was Lawrence Nahlik with 37 points and there was a tie for second between Yung Beece and Leon Smiler with 34 points.  Well done and we will see most of you tomorrow night at the Royal Mae Ping for what looks like being a great presentation night.

The 1st Weds of the month and so some of our regulars attended the monthly Gymkhana
“Friends” 9 hole competition. That left us with just 9 players, including Roscoe butler and his wife. Again we almost had the course to ourselves and the weather was perfect.
Joint winners were Barry Ochitwa and Ralph Hamilton with 31 points.Congratulations guys.

Maejo, 02.11.2016

This Wednesday we had (15) members and (2) guests participating in a “Stroke Play” competition format.  Even with some late arrivals we all teed off on schedule with those teeing off the front nine holes completed there respective rounds in approximately (4) hours.  The (2) four-ball groups going off the back nine holes took a little longer and they completed there round in 4.5 hours.  Today the weather was ideal for golf, at times, somewhat on the hot side, but for most of the round we had some cool breezes and later in the round some cloud cover.  Luckily, the skies did not open up, with a heavy downpour of rain, until we were all at the Caddy Shack enjoying a few refreshing drinks.

Relative to today’s results please note the following:

  • 3rd place with  net score of (75) was Nigel Stubbs
  • 2nd place honors with a net score of (70) goes to Graham Adams
  • 1st place winner was Ron Peters with a net score of (69)
