Lanna, 31.03.14
The weather was warm and the golf was hot at Lanna this Monday. 22 CMSG and 1 guest teed off early once more for a fast round of golf, just over three and a haft hours for the first group. Maybe that was because Frank hits such a long ball we had to run to keep up with him. The format for the day was Stableford play, high front nine points and high back nine points with an overall total points for the eighteen holes. It was good that only one prize can be awarded per person per round, if not Lestar Twigden would have won all three prizes. As it was Lestar took the overall total points for the eighteen holes with 47 points. Way to go Lestar. Gary walker took the front nine with 23 points and John Barrett had 21 points to take the back nine. Congratulation to all the winners.
There will be no Golf at Lanna for the next two Mondays dues to Thai Holidays. The next CMSG Monday golf game at Lanna will be on the 21st of April. To keep Monday golf going some of the Lanna golfers will be playing at Mezza Nine on Monday the 7th of April, meeting at eight and teeing off at eight thirty. If you are interested in a fun and relaxing game of golf come on out and join us.
Take care and keep the ball in the short grass and dry.

Mae Jo, 28.03.14
We had a record turn-out for a Friday match at with (30) members and (1) guest participating in another round of golf at Maejo. As many will remember (2) years ago we would only average between 8-12 golfers on a Friday. Today the conditions were again on the smoggy/pollution side coupled at times with hot sunshine. Also, we all completed our respective rounds in approx. 4 to 4-1/4 hours as a slow group of Chinese tourist held most of the groups up on the final holes.
Today we played a Stableford match with Dennis Byrne taking first place honors by posting a great score of (42) points. 2nd place went to Harry Nieuwland with another great score of (40) points. We had a tie today for 3rd place being shared by Stuart Leckie and Steve Bjorge both coming in with (39) points. Great scores and hats off to all of today’s winners!
We also again like to extend best wishes and a safe return back to Australia to Ric Cameron who will be returning back to work for a 6-7 month period. Also, it was an honor having Gino from the “Hole in One Group” joining us for the first time.
We look forward to seeing everyone next Wednesday for a 8:08 tee-off time. Lets have everyone show up a least 30 minutes prior to tee-off!
Today’s winners :Stuart, Harry, Dennis, Steve
Mae Jo, 26.03.14
This Wednesday we had (24) members teeing off for another round of golf at Maejo. Today it appears that the pollution returned, but luckily it was not as bad as during last Friday’s match. Hopefully in the next few days we will get some rain and/or wind to clear up the current smoggy conditions. Also, and as usual for this time of the year, the course was virtually empty and we all completed our respective rounds in 4 to 4-1/4 hours.
The format today was “Stroke Play” with the following results:
First Place: Jack Cooper with a net 69 (gross 79)
Second Place: Jeff Crosthwaite net 71 (gross 85)
Third Place: Leslie Mullen net 74 (gross 88)
Congratulations goes out to today’s winners!
We also would like to take this opportunity to extend best wishes to Bart (Harley) Hendricks who is returning to the USA for a few months. We all look forward to his return next Fall.
In closing, we look forward to seeing all the members this coming Friday for a Stableford competition with a 7:52 tee-off time.
Today’s Winners

Misc: Ruling notification
There was a question on the ruling caused by a practice swing from Joop. A few leaves came down and Ken Nalder gave him a penalty (Rule 13-2). Barry Rhodes wrote about it : “The acid test for me is whether the fact that leaves have been removed from the area of intended swing by a practice swing, or swings, has lessened the distraction that the player will experience when they make their actual stroke. I suggest that this is not usually the case and therefore knocking down a small number of leaves does not incur a penalty in most instances. (Decision 13-2/22) Of course, where any part of a branch has been knocked down then the reverse is probably true, as even the removal of a small branch is likely to reduce the distraction caused to the player.
Lanna, 24.03.14
Fifteen hardy CMSG and three guest, which are now new members of the CMSG took on the Lanna’s number 1 & 2 golf courses. Getting off a little early once more all golfer where able to get around in just about four and a half hour. The weather was warm but with the help of a little breeze it was good golfing weather. The competition of the day was Stableford play. Scoring was good Kim Stogner was high golfer with 43 points but sorry to say he didn’t get into the competition so that other could win so he said. After a recount of the points there will be an adjustment of prize money next week. No winners wont change just the order of them. Darrell Pinney had 40 points to take first place, Lester Twigden was in with 39 points to take second. Gary Lyon and Mike Reeve both had 38 points for third. Congratulation to all winners.
As I had mention before we have three new members. Julian Wing, Nigel Stubbs and Richard Massey all from England. I’m not sure if that is good or not but welcome to the CMSG and let us all welcome them to our golf society when we see them next.
At this time I would like to thank Gary Lyon for doing a great job as Captain while I was gone. Thank You Gary.
Next weeks format at Lanna on the 31st will be Stableford play once more. Points will be awarded for high front nine, high back nine and for overall high points so come on out and see how high you can score.
Darrell, Gary, Lester, Mike
Mae Jo, 21.03.14
After the “International Tournament” yesterday (11) Die hard members showed up for another round of golf at Mae Jo. Again, the course was virtually empty of players and we all completed the first nine holes under (2) hours but then our groups caught up with a group of 4-somes on the back nine that slowed our play down substantially, resulting in taking a little over (4) hours to complete our round. In addition, the air quality was the worst we encountered this year as the sun never broke thru the haze and smoke that filled the air.
Based on the number of players we postponed the “Switch Format” to a Stableford Nassau with first place honors going to Stuart Macfarlane scoring (36) points. We had a tie for the front nine honors being shared by Jimmy Catterson and Bart Hendricks both posting (19) points each. We also had a tie for the back nine holes with Harry Nieuwland and Ric Cameron both having (20) points each. Not a bad day as we almost had as many winners as losers today. Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!
Bart, Ric, Stuart, Harry, Jimmy
We look forward to seeing all the members next Wednesday (March 26, 2014) for our monthly “Medal” competition with a scheduled tee-off at 7:52 AM.
Doi Inthanon, 20.03.14
For details go to International Report.
Mae Jo, 19.03.14
This Wednesday we only had (11) members and (2) guests teeing off at Maejo. Possibly, a combination of the early tee-off time, smoggy/polluted air quality, and the next day scheduled “International Scramble” all contributed to this low turn-out. Regardless of the numbers we all teed-off on schedule and completed our respective round in approx. (4) hours.
Relative to the golf results Larry Richards took 1st place honors scoring (18) points on both the front and back nine for a total of (36) points. In 2nd place we had a tie between Ken Nalder and Bart Hendricks both scoring (34) points. Last but not least, in 3rd place was Ric Cameron posting (33) stableford points. Hats off to all of today’s winners.
We also would like to take this opportunity to extend a warn welcome to Michael (Kuzie) Kuzmich who submitted his first card today as our newest member.
Larry , Ric, Ken
We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow for our annual “International” tournament at Doi Inthanon with a scheduled tee-off at 8:30 AM
Lanna, 17.03.14
A social event happened at Lanna on Monday when the regulars were joined by a group of Gymkana Friends for the day. Also we had a rare visit from Committee member Christian and an always welcome visit by gimpy Ted Taylor. The Gymkana group judging from the positive remarks enjoyed the course and said they would be back for more punishment and possible membership.
On the course the days honours went to Smiley Haddon with 40 points and second place to Lester with 38 and third to acting Captain Gary with 37.
Next week Captain Gariano will be back see you then.
Gary, Peter (Smiley) and Lester
Maejo, 14.03.14
Today we only had (14) members teeing off for another round of Friday golf at Maejo. The weather was on the warm side today and also based on the limited to zero visibility of the surrounding mountains it appears we are entering the smoky/pollution time of the year. In addition, the low season is upon us as the course was virtually empty today and most of our groups completed their respective rounds in approx. (4) hours with (1) group, for unknown reasons, finishing in 4-1/2 hours.
Relative to today’s Nassau competition Stuart Duncan took 1st place honors with (40) stableford points. As Stuart reported “his golf lessons are starting to pay dividends”. The front nine winner today with (24) points was Gerry Brimacombe and the back nine winner was Jack Kuzina with (22) points winning by default as Stuart the overall winner posted a higher score (23).
Also, in my previous match report I forgot to extend a warm welcome back to Dennis Byrne who just returned after a (5) month period. Nice to see you back and joining us again Dennis! Also, Gordon Langtry will be returning back to Canada in a few days and we all extend best wishes to Gordon and his family for a safe journey back home and we all look forward to his return in a few months.
As usual, we look forward to seeing everyone next Wednesday for an early tee-off time of 7:00 AM
Jack – Stuart – Gerry
Stableford – 14.03.2014 – Mae Jo Friday
Maejo, 12.03.14
Today we had (23) members and (1) guest teeing off for another round of golf at Maejo. Today the format was a 2-man team scramble and with everyone showing up on time we had somewhat of a smooth and orderly start off both the front and back nine holes. Again, the weather was cool in the morning and, as usual, heating up as our round progressed on a virtually empty course resulting in all our groups finishing just under (4) hours.
The winning teams today were:
1st place – Frank Schwarz and Dennis Byrne playing off a handicap of (12) finishing with a net (64).
2nd place – Jim Hopkins and Steve Bjorge playing off a a handicap of (11) and posting a net score of (66).
3rd place – Yung Beece and Joop Schillemans playing of a handicap of (10) finishing with a net (68).
Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winning teams!
We look forward to all the members teeing off again this coming Friday at 8:00 where the format will be Stableford – Nassau.
Yung, Joop, Frank , Dennis, Jim , Steve
Lanna, 10.03.14
With 20 members being in time the first group left the first Tee 10 minutes before the scheduled tee of time. The weather was excellent and the temperature was cool during most of the round. The order of play was today low to high Handicap and everyone made it around the Course in about 4 1/2 hours. There was only a Five Ball in front until the 9th green and than they continued onto the Race track. At hole 19 it was obvious that everyone had a great time as the scoring was good. I like to mention that the greens were rolling with consistent speed and even holding approach shots from 160 Yards in. The fairways are very hard but they upside is that you get another 20 to 30 Yards more roll.
It is worth mentioning that David Stevens had a front nine Gross 45 for 25 Stableford points. His back nine however yielded a much lower result which was very unfortunate for his great start and than the overall points.
As to the Winners, for a 4 way tie on 2nd place: Gerry Brimacombe, Mike Mason, Lester Twigden and Hiro Namekawa with 36 points. Three tied for 1st place: John Barrett, Natee Chantaravirod and Barry Ochitwa. Congratulations to todays Winners. Next Monday we will have a Stableford competition.
John, Natee & Barry
Mae Jo, 07.03.14
Today we had (16) members and (1) guest teeing off at Maejo for a Stableford competition. As usual the weather was great but today the course played somewhat on the slow side as most of our groups were held up at times but we still managed to complete our rounds under 4-1/2 hours.
Today’s first place winner was Jimmy Catterson posting a great score of (43) points. It should be noted that on the last hole Jim hit the wrong ball in error and was penalized (2) strokes. Who knows what his score would have been if not for this penalty. 2nd place today goes to Ted Taylor posting another great score of (42) points. Ted was sitting in the winners seat until Jimmy’s card was tallied. Last but not least 3rd place goes to Gerry Brimacombe posting a respectable score of (37) points. Hats off to today’s winners!
Jim, Gerry & Ted
We look forward to seeing all our members next Wednesday March 12, 2014 with a new scheduled tee-off time of 8:00 AM
Stableford – 07.03.2014 – Mae Jo Friday
Mae Jo, 05.03.14
On our first Wednesday match at Maejo 20 members consisting of (5 teams) arrived early to participate in “Harry’s Orange Ball Birthday Celebration”. The weather again was perfect for golf and we all completed our respective rounds under 4-1/2 hours. As noted, the low season has officially arrived resulting in faster play. Today we had (3) teams starting on hole number 1 and (2) teams starting on hole number 10. The start of the match went as smooth as silk but for some unknown reasons the teams starting on the back nine were under the impression that we were using a Stableford format where a Net format for scoring was in place (as clearly stated on the instructions available for all members prior to the start). Regardless, of the mix up the results remained the same for the winning teams. Also, it should be noted that the majority of players enjoyed the Orange Ball format with minimal complaints recorded. Lastly, everyone enjoyed the lunch and beer that was provided by Harry and thanks goes out to Harry for this festive occasion and again Happy Birthday, Harry.
The winning teams are as follows:
First Place ( 132 total strokes ) team of Tom Rowand, Craig Morriss, Yung Beece, and Lesley Mullen
Second Place ( 133 total strokes ) team of Jim Hopkins, Steven Bjorge, Ted Taylor, and Stuart Duncan
Third Place ( 139 total strokes) team of Jack Cooper, Stuart Leckie, Steve Metcalf, Ric Cameron
Congratulations to all of today’s winners!

Lanna, 03.03.14
On Monday morning 17 members a guest and new member Natee Chantaravirod played a stroke competition on courses 3 & 1. The absence of our winter visitors was happily noted and except for the last group the round was completed in good time.
Having an exceptional round David Stephens took the honours with a net 68 and was closely followed by Keith Freeman with a net 71 and Mike Reeve with a net 72. It should be noted that Mike only beat Dizzy by a hair of his beard as she was a close fourth with a net 73.
Keith Freeman, David, Mike
Mae Jo, 28.02.14
Today we had (21) members teeing off at Maejo on another great day for golf. All our groups teed off on schedule thanks to everyone being at the course on time. It appears that the high season is finally winding down as all our groups completed their respective rounds under 4-1/4 hours. Hopefully, in the coming weeks we will be back to completing our rounds in 4 hours. Relative to today’s results in our Stableford competition Stuart Leckie took first place honors scoring (40) points. Coming in 2nd place was Ric Cameron with (36) points followed with a 4-way tie for 3rd place being shared by Jack Cooper, Ken Nalder, Jim Catterson, and Jim Hopkins all posting a score of (35) points. Hats off to all of today’s winners!
Our next scheduled round at Maejo will next Wednesday ( March 5th) which officially changes our Tuesday’s rounds to Wednesday. Also, please note that our tee-off time is for 7:20 am. In addition, the format will be a 4-man team “Orange” ball challenge celebrating Harry Niewland’s birthday where Harry will be picking up the tab of our post golf match lunch and beer gathering. Again, lets everyone make a effort to arrive in plenty of time prior to the 7:20 tee-off so that final instructions and rules for the “Orange” ball format can be reviewed.

Mae Jo, 25.02.14
On a cool beautiful February morning in Chiang Mai, 23 members and 1 guest enjoyed a lovely day of golf at the Mae Jo Golf Resort and Spa. We played un-impended by the dwindling numbers of tour groups who arrived after we teed-off. The starters ensured that we enjoyed a steady pace of play – many thanks to Khun Na, Khun Tum, and Khun Noi for this.
The competition format was the monthly medal (stroke play) applying the course playing handicap to compete for low net in Division A (0 to 19 handicap), and Division B (20+ handicap), organized by Jim Hopkins standing in for Captain Jack Kuzina who is still back at work in England.
The following were today’s winners:
Division A: (0 – 19 course playing handicap)
First Place: Jeff Crosthwaite, shot a gross 81 for an amazing net 65 – brilliant golf Jeff! Welcome back to your impressive level of high performance that will entitle you to the significant reduction in handicap that you and we have been anticipating. Jeff’s excellent round was also acknowledged as the Low Gross score of the day.
Second Place: Paul Hubbard, shot a gross 88 for a net score of 69. Paul continues on his relentless reduction of handicap due to incremental improvement in his performance over the past few weeks. His ball-striking was superb; unfortunately, he left at least 5 or 6 putts out there on the greens, or he would have challenged Jeff for first place low net honours. Paul is a force to be reckoned with in the future.
Division B: (20 – 32 course playing handicap)
First Place: Craig Morris shot a net 72 to meet his handicap. Well done Craig.
Second Place: We had a three-way tie for second place at net 76. On the countback, Steve Bjorge and Lennart lost out to Joop’s par 3 on hole no. 17.
Everyone enjoyed the great weather, the course, the friendship, and the luncheon afterwards. We are truly fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy such a fun and rewarding experience of social golf together as we had today.
Thanks to everyone for making the whole experience so enjoyable for all of us.
Todays’ Winners: Paul, Jeff, Craig, and Joop
Lanna, 24.02.14
Roscoe Butler led the field at Lanna on Monday with 38 Stableford points. Dizzy Reeve would have taken second with 37 points had she entered the competition but second place went to Mark Morris with 35 points. Third place was secured by David Stephens who finished with 33 points.
Captain Allan will be away next Monday but feel free to join the group for the monthly stroke competition.
The Committee wants to thank Gary Lyon to stand in for Captain Allan’s absence.
Stephen, Roscoe, Mark
Mae Jo, 21.02.14
Under a cloudy sky with a light breeze, 22 members and 2 guests enjoyed golf on somewhat soggy fairways due to over-watering. The large tour groups are beginning slow down now and the pace of play is beginning to pick up.
The competition format was Stableford, organized by Jim Hopkins standing in for Captain Jack Kuzina who is still back at work in England for a few weeks.
Four of our members came in with good numbers of points today. The following were today’s winners:
First Place: Tom Rowand, scoring an amazing 44 points – brilliant golf Tom!
Second Place: Ted Taylor, scoring a very respectable 40 points – finally back in form after a year of recuperating from the hip replacement. Good to see you game is back Teddy.
Third Place (Tie): Young Jimmy Catterson with 36 points – following his 25 point front nine on Tuesday.
Graham Adams with 36 points from a very steady round.
Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!
The shot of the day was Young Jimmy’s trick shot on no. 14 – bouncing off the red clay basin to end up on the green, thereby winning the Caddy Hole! For those who missed it, ask him to do it again – it’s a neat trick!
Enjoy your weekend; we’ll see you on Tuesday for our Monthly Medal competition.
Today’s winners: Tom, Ted, Graham, Jimmy
Royal Chiang Mai, 20.02.14
In a last minute change agreed by everyone, 8 Members made their way to the Royal Chiang Mai Golf Resort. We had confirmed 2 Tee times for a price of Baht 1.500 including Caddies. Jim Hopkins and Frank Schwarz arrived first and were asked to pay Baht 2.700 for 18 holes including Caddie fee. After a verification with the office we were told that indeed the promotion which was confirmed to us 4 days earlier was canceled. I am sure the office saw the disappointment and anger in our faces and picked up the phone to call the Marketing Director who did advise us of the promotion. And luckily for us the communication was honored and we can proudly say that we are the only ones to have played the course for Baht 1.500 today.
As for the playing, the course was in great shape and it was fun to hit onto the greens and see the Ball stop, additionally had rather straight putts most of the time with true and consistent running greens. It would be great if the office would be as consistent. It would be a hard to beat Golf course in Chiang Mai. Before we started Bart made the suggestion to have the Par 3, 17th hole as a hole to win Baht 50 from each player (additionally to the Baht 100) for the closest to the pin and everyone agreed. This was won by Ian Craig who put his Tee shot at around 15 feet from the pin.
As for the Scoring; In third place (no money) was Paul Hubbard with 36 points, in second place Stuart Leckie with 37 points and in first place Steven Bjorge with a great Score of 39 points. Congratulation to the Winners and a thank you Paul, Jim, Don, Stuart, Ian, Steven and Bart to come out today.
Iain (closest to Pin), Stuart and Steve

The following were today’s winners:

Overall: Joop Schillemans, with 39 points
Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!
Bon voyage to Geoff Garrett, heading back down to New Zealand for the winter.

Lanna, 17.02.14
Another fine day of golfing at Lanna, the weather was nice and warm with a little breeze to keep it from getting to hot. 18 Social Golfers and 1 guest played a fun round of golf. The course was on the dry side most golfers got a little more roll out of their golf shots. 16 golfers joined in the two person best ball Stableford competition making for an interesting round of golf. Most teams scored in the forties, with a three way tie for third place (41 points). Because of the tie it was decided that only a prize for first and second place would be awarded. The team of Mike Reeve and Ric Cameron took first place with 45 points with Gordon Langtry and Peter Hubbard (Smiley) with 43 points to take second. Congratulation to all golfers.
I’ll be going back to the States this week for a month and Gary Lyon will be acting captain so take it easy on him. When I get back I’ll have a new competition game to play, which we’ll talk about before putting it into the golf schedule.
To all the Social golfers keep the ball in the short grass most of all have fun.
Next Mondays golf game at Lanna will be a normal Stableford format.
Ric, Smily, Gordon and Mike
Mae Jo, 14.02.14

Kudos goes out to all of today’s winners!
Nothing out of the ordinary today other than we were most fortunate that the Chiang Mai golf club and restaurant was open on this holiday serving both food and the required beer. Also don’t forget to submit your (4) man team for the “Harry Orange Ball” birthday celebration where lunch and drinks will be provided by Harry.
In closing we look forward to seeing everyone next Tuesday for a 7:12 tee-off. Let’s all make a better effort to be at the course by 6:45 am at the latest!
Today’s winners: Ric, Jim, Jeff, & Ted
Mae Jo, 11.02.14
This Tuesday we had (25) members teeing off for another round of golf at Maejo. Initially we had (6) foursomes but as standard practice (1) member arrived late throwing a monkey wrench into the pairings. So be it, we all had a another great round of golf under perfect weather conditions. Today the course played on the slow side but we all managed to complete our respective rounds in 4-1/2 hours which is typical for this time of the year.
Relative to the Stableford Nassau results Ron Hill tool first place honors posting a blistering score of (45) points. The front nine winner was Stuart Duncan with 25 points and the back nine winner was Mike scoring (21) points. It should be noted that Paul Hubbard posted a great score of (40) points but did not qualify for any of the prizes. Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!

Once again the weather was great at Lanna, cool to start with but warming up as the morning went on. Nineteen golfers showed up for a Stableford competition. Prize here awarded for the highest points on the front and back nine with the top prize going to the overall total points of the round. Roscoe Butler took the front nine with 23 points but left early and said to give any prize he might win to the next highest player which was Noi Taylor with 22 points. Thank You Roscoe and welcome back and I’m sure Noi thanks you too. The highest points for the back nine went to Barry Ochitwa with 19 points. The overall points for the round went to Darrell Pinney with 38 points but sorry to say he forgot to get into the competition so David U-Smith stepped up and took the overall high points with 37 points. Congratulation to all the winners.
Next week competition at Lanna will be a Stableford two person best ball, team makeup will be by random draw. See you all at Lanna for good golfing and a fun time.
Sorry no photos this week, seems to be an error between the camera and computer, why , your guess is as good as mine.
Mae Jo, 07.02.14
Again another cool morning that quickly warmed up making it a perfect golf day. Today we had (24 members – 12 teams) competing in a Greensome alternate shot format. This format received mixed reviews ranging from “I hope we play this only once a year”, “I like the format”, to “I am paying for a full 18-hole round of golf and only getting 1/2 the swings”. Based on these reviews the Greensome format will be scheduled on a limited basis if at all. Relative to today’s winners taking 1st place honors was the team of Paul Hubbard and Thomas Roland posting a net score of 70 ( gross 91). We had a 4-way tie for 2nd place being shared by the team of Leslie Mullen and Ken Nalder, Jack Cooper and Bart Hendricks, Ric Cameron and Craig Morriss, & Jeff Crosthwaite and Calvin Davis all posting a score of net 71. 3rd place went to the team of Frank Schwarz and Lennart Larssen with a score of 73 net. Based on the results the team of Paul and Thomas with the mid range handicap (both members in the low 20’s handicap) must of ham and egged it as they came in 1st place. Hats off to all of today’s winners!
Special thanks to Frank and Jim Hopkins for coordinating the lunch awards.
We look forward to seeing everyone again next Tuesday for a Stableford competition
Frank, Lennart, Ric, Craig, Paul, Lesley, Tom, Ken, Calvin, Jack & Bart
Mae Jo, 04.02.14
It appears that the weather cannot make up its mind as we returned to another cold morning for a 7:12 scheduled tee-off at Maejo. The greens initially were covered with moisture resulting in slow greens with rooster-tail style puts but as the day progressed it became much warmer with all the greens firming up and back to normal speeds. Today we had (23) members and (1) guests playing in a Stableford competition. Today’s guest was the distinguished ( at times that is) and past captain Scott Lumsden. It was nice to see Scott again as he has returned from the UK to spend month’s vacation back in Northern Thailand. Also, it was nice to see for a change that all members showed up on time!
The following were today’s winners:
First Place: Stuart Leckie and Geoff Garrett both scoring (37) points
Second Place: Frank Schwarz , Paul Hubbart , & Don Bishop all posting (35) points
Third Place: Craig Morriss and Calvin Davis with (34) points each
Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!

We look forward to seeing everyone this coming Friday for our “Alternate 2-man team competition”. Tee off again at 7:12
Lanna, 03.02.14
Thirteen hardy golfers took on the number three courses at Lanna known as the DREADED Race Track Course, along with the number one courses in stroke play competition. I’m sure some golfers stayed home to watch the Super Bowl, but don’t know why when the weather was warm and great for golfing. Maybe a little slow because of the high season snow birds but we all made it around and back to the club house for food and drinks.
In stock play competition golfers hope to be on the top of their game and it did in some of the golfers today. You might say it was a family affair with Mike Reeve taking first place with a net 70. Lister Twigden and Dizzy Reeve both tried with net 71 but Lister took second on count b1ack.
Next week at Lanna we’ll be back on the 1 & 2 courses for a stableford competition. Prize format will be for high stableford points on the front nine and high stableford points on the back nine and one for overall total points. One prize per person. So come on out and enjoy good golfing at Lanna.

It appears the weather is finally starting to warm up as few of our members wore any jumpers/jackets at the start of play. Today we had our first “Match Play Against the Course”, which was originally recommended by Lesley Mullen, and upon completion received approval from all the members participating today. First place resulted in a 3-way tie being shared by Frank Schwarz, Jeff Crosthwaite and Calvin Davis all posting a score of “+1”. Alone in 2nd place was Bart Hendricks with score of “0”. Third place was shared by Geoff Garrett, Craig Morriss, & Stuart Leckie all posting a “-1” score.
Hats off to all of today’s winners!
Today was the first implementation day of members not having a valid excuse for not showing up at the luncheon that results in relinquishing their respective winnings to the next player in-line. Sorry to report that Calvin Davis forfeited his prize for not attending lunch without an acceptable reason or excuse.
For clarification the following are acceptable reasons/excuses where members will not lose their prize money:
A) Doctor’s appointment – member or member’s family
B) Attend school function for children and/or pick up child from school
C) or any reasonable request not covered above – but must be given to the captain prior to tee-off
Non Acceptable reasons:
1) Have to take photos of my fence
2) Have to go shopping with my partner
3) Don’t like food menu at the “Caddy Shack”
4) Not that hungry
5) Have to get a hair cut
6) Really don’t enjoy the company of most of the other members
Stuart, Frank, Craig, Geoff, Bart, Jeff
Look forward to seeing everyone next Tuesday with a scheduled Tee-off time of 7:12 AM.
Mae Jo, 28.01.14
On another chilly morning we had (26) members teeing off for our monthly “Medal” competition at Maejo. The starter ( Tum ) had all our groups teeing off the 10th tee box. Subsequently, when our (2) three-somes and (5) four-somes made the turn no other groups were present on the 1st tee-box resulting in not slowing our pace of play. All in all most of our groups completed their respective round under 4-1/2 hours.
Relative to the results Frank Schwarz playing in flight A took the low gross honors posting a score of 82. In flight B Jim Hopkins took the honors in which he came in with a gross score of 97 strokes. Both players shooting a little over their handicap. Today’s net winners were Jeff Crosthwaite in flight A coming in with a net score of 70 and Thomas Rowand playing in flight B shooting a net score of 68. Hats off to all of today’s winners.
For clarification purposes it was unanimously approved that all future winner’s must be present during the lunch/drinking function to receive their prize money winning. If not present, then the winnings we be awarded to the next players in line. Further discussions and input is welcome.
Also for clarification purposes I was amiss in posting the revised rules of “Medal” play in that there would be no awards category for “Low Gross” scores in any flight groupings. I did announce prior to teeing off the gross winner would receive their initial 100 baht back but again now realize numerous members did not hear this announcement. Based on the this please be advised that for all future “Medal” matches will be based solely on “Net” results with awarding prizes to the top (2) finishers within each flight. I apologize to all those who were offended with this change.
Continuing please also note that we will not be using a count-back process to break a tie in the advent that we have multiple winners with the same score. In my limited opinion the count-back method favors the lower handicap golfer that I deem to be unfair.
In closing, we look forward to seeing every one this coming Friday as the format will be match play against the course. Please read the format if you require additional clarification. Also our scheduled starting time is 7:12 AM so lets all be there (30) minutes prior.
No photo today as again I was amiss in rounding up the culprits (sorry I meant winners!)
Lanna, 27.01.14
Another great day at Lanna the weather was just right for golfing. Little slow but we all manage to get done in a timely manner. We had 12 members and three guest or should we say future new members once they get back to Chiang Mai in March. Mr. Doi had a good round and posted 41 points to take first place. Smiley came in second with 36 in points. Gary Lyon took ll be playing the 3 &1 courses at Lanna which will be metal play.
So come on out with you’re A game in hand.
Winners Smiley, Doi, Gary
Mae Jo, 24.01.14
After a enjoyable round of golf at the previous day away match at Mae Moh we had (17) members and (4) guests teeing off for another Friday round of golf at Maejo at an extremely early tee-off time of 6:48 AM. Lucky for some of our members the starter made an error where as the actual tee-off time was 7:12 and not the published time of 6:48 AM. Again, we thank those members who showed up approx. 15 minutes after the scheduled tee time so that all the initial pairing were thrown out the window to accommodate all the late arrivals.
Regardless of the pandemonium at the start we all happily teed off on an extremely cold morning and we completed our respective rounds in a little over (4) hours which is most acceptable for this time of the year.
Relative to the winners of the Stableford Nassau competition Jeff Crosthwaite took overall honors posting an impressive score of (42) points. Good work Jeff in that his handicap is rapidly going down to where he is used to playing. We had a tie for the front nine holes with (21) points being shared by Ken Nader and Joop Schillemans. The back nine was won by Harry Nieuwland with (24) points. Hats off to all of today’s winners!
Next Tuesdays ( February 28, 2013) Maejo Match is scheduled for a tee-off time of 7:04 AM.
The winners : Joop, Harry, Ken & Jeff
We all look forward to seeing you next Tuesday for the monthly medal competition.
Mae Moh, 23.01.14
Today we played a 2 man Best Ball format. For our first Away Game in 2014 we had a great turnout of 44 players who made their way to the Mae Moh Golf Course past Lampang. We have visited this course the last time in January 2013 and it was at that time under reconstruction of various greens. Now this process was finished and the course played as before. The conditions were excellent and it was fun to play. Looking at the score some must have played a different course. It was pleasure to see that everyone had a great time, the atmosphere after the game at the Club House was very good.
As to the Winners, we had a 4 teams tie for third place with a stunning Net Score of 62: Noi Taylor & Pranee A. Buckley, Garry Walker & Darrell Pinney, Ron Hill & Jim Catterson, Keith Taylor & John Noyes. In second place with a Nest Score 61 the team Jerry Buckley & Don Bishop.
Special mentioning goes to David Stephens who shot a Net Score of 60 and with the help of his partner Graham Adams they came in first place with a Net Score 59.
Mae Jo, 21.01.14
This Tuesday we had (22) members and (2) guests teeing off at Mae Jo on a perfect weather wise golf day. The format for today’s round was a 2-man scramble where in most instances low handicappers were paired with higher handicapper members. All in all it appeared to be an enjoyable format for all those playing with little to no complaints. Concerning the results the team of Jim Hopkins and Ted Taylor took 1st place honors with a net score of 68. 2nd place went to the team of Frank Schwarz and Lennart Larsson firing a net 69. Last but not least, with a net 70 for 3rd place was the team of Stuart Leckie and Calvin Davis. Congratulations to today’s winning teams!
Today’s Winners
Ted , Jim , Frank , Lennart, Calvin
Lanna, Monday 20.01.14
Had a small group of golfers at Lanna 16 members and 1 guest. I guess everyone is resting up for the away game. The weather was great and no snow birds to slow the game down. For the most part the scoring was low but Berry O. had another great day with 39 points to take first place. I, Allan G. had 33 points to take second place. Rick C. took third place with 31 points. OPPS, after a recount of the stableford points it looks like Noi Taylor had 31 points as well, so there’ll be an adjustment of the prize money at our next Lanna golf game Which well be on the 27th of January. So see you all there.
Barry, Allan & Ric
Mae Jo, Friday 17.01.14
This Friday 24 members participated in a stableford (Nassau) competition. For unknown reasons the Maejo starter had all the (6) foursomes tee off from number 1 tee box.
Play initially appeared to be slow but most foursomes completed the front nine holes under 2 hours but played slowed substantially on the back nine resulting in most groups completing their round in 4- 1/2 hours which for this time of the year is most acceptable.
Concerning the results, Sam Torr took overhaul honors posting a score of 39 points. The front nine was shared by Ted Taylor, Jeff Crosthwaite, & Steven Bjorge all posting a score of 19 points. The back nice was won by Calvin Davis with 21 points.
Congratulations to all of todays winners.
We look forward to seeing all the members next Tuesday for a 2 man team scramble match.
Today’s Winners
Mae Jo, Tuesday 14.01.2014
25 members arrived at Mae Jo for the individual stableford competition, 1 member was still earning his handicap so was unable to compete for prizes today. The pace of play was good for this time of year, however, all groups had to wait for some time as they turned to continue play on their respective final 9 holes.
Weather conditions were ideal for golf and remained cool for much of the game. All rounds were completed in under 4 and a half hours.
Christian took first prize with an impressive 38 points. Christian had an extra lie in today and it obviously paid him dividends in his golf game. Well done Christian.
Taking second place was Frank Schwarz with another great score of 36 points. Welcome back to the winners podium Frank!
In third place (decided on a count-back) was Yung with a steady 34 points.
Congratulations to all of todays winners.
Yung, Christian and Frank
Lanna, Monday 13.10.14
On Monday at Lanna twenty seven members were joined by new member Keith Freeman who was warmly welcomed. The going was slow at times and needed the best part of five hours to complete.
Slow play didn’t slow down the Stableford winner Bart Hendricks who broke a 100 with a gross 99 for the first time at Majeo or Lanna and collected 46 points and first prize. Steve Bjorge and Rene Bacchi were the closest challengers coming home with 39 points each. Third place went to Darrell Pinney who also made a strong challenge with 38 points.
After the presentation the retiring Captain was warmly thanked and presented with a best wishes card signed by the members.

Mae Jo, Friday 10.01.2014
Another good turn out at Mae Jo today with 25 members arriving for a round of competitive golf. We had planned to play the 4 hole nomination but I made the decision to change the format to stableford. My apologies for the last minute change but I am sure we will be able to enjoy the planned competition at a later date. The course was busy again today so some waiting was necessary. It was a little disappointing to find that Mae Jo had moved some tees forward, obviously with the intention to quicken the pace of play. Unfortunately, it seemed only to reduce the length of the course and pace of play remained slow at various points on the course. Oh well, it is high season.
Despite this, some good scores were recorded.
Taking first place was Gerry Brimacombe with an impressive 37 points, great score! In second place was Bart (yet again) with 36 points. Bart is certainly playing some consistent golf at the moment. In third place was Richard Brown with 35 points who seemed very surprised to collect a prize. Well done to all of todays winners.
Of special note was Bart’s drive on the 6th hole today. Bart claimed a ‘hole in one’ on this par 5! Please see picture below, this shows clearly where his tee shot landed…….very interesting.
We also said a fond farewell to Tom Berger who leaves CM on Sunday for work. Have a safe journey Tom and we look forward to seeing you back at Mae Jo soon.

Stableford – 10.01.2014 – Maejo Friday
Mae Jo, Tuesday 07.01.2014
27 members arrived for the Nassau stableford competition today. The improved weather is welcomed by all during the early morning starting, though we did have a little fog today too. Everyone completed their rounds in under four and a half hours which is a fair pace during high season. The improvement in weather conditions is certainly being reflected in the scores and today was no exception. Taking the prize for the best front 9 was Ric Cameron with 20 points, great score Ric! Bart stepped up yet again and claimed the prize for the best back 9 with an amazing 24 points. Bart is certainly showing an improvement in his golf game and it is being reflected in his ever decreasing handicap, well done Bart. Claiming the overall best score with an amazing score of 41 points (with 2 wipeouts) was Jack Cooper. Incredible score Jack!!! Thank you to everyone who turned up today, it was a fun day.

Lanna, Monday 06.01.2014
Twenty seven members and guests set out on courses three and one for a stroke competition on what turned out to be a very long five hour round. Unfortunately our Asian neighbors have left their cold weather and arrived in Chiang Mai in numbers and we the long term residents have to find our patience.
In the stroke competition Allen Norris took first prize carding a nice 95 with a 27 handicap for a net 68. Terry Redding was the closest challenger with a gross 101 and a 30 handicap for a net 71. Third place went to Noi Taylor with a net 72.
Congratulations to all, see you next week.
Winners: Allen, Noi, Terry
Mae Jo, Friday 03.01.2014
Today we had a total of 24 members and 4 guests arrive for a round of golf at Mae Jo. The weather is certainly improving and a significant rise in the early morning temperatures, was appreciated by all. Despite a confusing start due to the late arrival of some players, we were all able to tee off on time from both the 1st and 10th tees. Play was slow but this is to be expected during the high season and for many, this did not spoil their game, which is evident in the high scores that were submitted by many.
Results:
Taking first place today with a terrific score of 40 points was Bart. Well done!
Taking second place and becoming a regular prize winner, was Tom Berger with a great score of 39 points.
Geoff Garrett and Steve Metcalfe both scored 38 points but Geoff took third place on a count back. Congratulations to both of you.
We said a fond farewell to Noel today who leaves for Ireland next week. Have a safe journey and we look forward to seeing you again during your next visit.
A big thank you to Jeff Crosthwaite who kindly bought drinks for everyone after golf, cheers Jeff.
