Lanna, 31.10.16
It was the first golf day after the Annual Tournament, and interest in this addictive (yet sometimes annoying) game was obviously waning because only 13 members turned up at Lanna this morning. Not sure who was in front of us (different groups on both nines), but they were seriously on the slow side and this was obviously the cause our low scoring abilities this week. Nevertheless, we all finished in around 4.5 hours having started teeing off at 8:05am.
The results are as follows:
There was a tie for 2nd place between Barry Ochitwa and Mark Morris who both managed to score 33 Stableford points, but the outright winner was Kim Stogner with 34 points. Well done to our winners.
Today’s Winners: Mark, Kim, & Barry
Next week will be Stroke (NET) play around courses 3+1 when the Lanna Birdie Hole will be introduced.
North Hill, 28.10.16 (4th Leg of the 2016 CMSG Annual Tournament)
For the last round of our 2016 Annual Tournament we had a great turn out as (45) members all arrived on schedule for a most orderly and smooth tee-off. Regardless of the pre-early morning rains the clouds dispersed and most of our round was played under sunny skies coupled with extremely hot temperatures. It should be noted that all aspects of the course (greens, fairways, bunkers, tee-boxes etc.) were in excellent condition subsequently not having to put the “Lift, Clean, & Place” rule into effect.
Prior to reporting on the results, we offer our sincere thanks to the staff and management of the North Hills golf course. As mentioned above, the course could not have been in any better condition. In addition, we thank the most gracious management for donating (4) free rounds of golf, and also thanking them for blocking / closing the course from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM so none of our groups were delayed when making the turns to hole 10 or hole 1.
Getting back to the results of our final leg please note the following:
Overall Results:
- 1st place winner: Rob Grootenhuijs ( 37) points
- 2nd place overall: 4 way tie shared by Dao Beece, Graham Adams, Kim Stogner, & Lawrence Nahlik all posting a score of (36) points
Front Nine:
- 1st place Shaun Stewart with (20) points
- 2nd place Sarinee Livingstone with (19) points
Back Nine:
- 1st place went to Peter (Smiley) Haddon with (21) points
- 2nd place to Ian Fraser with (20) points
Overall Winners Circle: Rob, Dao, Graham
Hats off to all of today’s winners and further congratulations and thanks to all the CMSG members for making this another successful “Annual Tournament”.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2016 Awards Dinner being held on Saturday evening (6:00 PM ) November 5, 2016 at the Imperial Mae Ping hotel.
Inthanon, 26.10.16 (3rd Leg of the 2016 CMSG Annual Tournament)
Another good turn-out for the 3rd leg of our “Annual Tournament” as we had (40) members all showing up on time to hone their golfing skills and position themselves as potential leaders of this year’s tournament. After (2) days of heavy rain the weather was ideal for a round of golf. The morning started off under cloudy skies that continued through out our round coupled with some light to moderate rain showers that only lasted for (3) holes. For some unknown reason it took most of the groups to complete their respective round in over (4-1/5) hours with the ending groups finishing around (5) hours.
The following are the final results of today’s round:
Overall:
- 1st place Dave Beck (37) points
- 2nd place being shared by Dao Beece & Julian Wing both scoring (36) points
- 3rd place with (35) points goes to Graham Adams
Front Nine:
- 1st place with (19) points Roscoe Butler
- 2nd place we had a tie between Leon Smiler & Shaun Stewart with (18) points
Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners!
Overall Winners: Graham, Dave, Dao, & Julian
Front & Back Winners: Roscoe, Leon, Shaun, & Jim
We look forward to seeing everyone this coming Friday ( October 28, 2016) for the final leg of our tournament being held at North Hills with a starting tee-off time of 9:00. We again ask everyone to show up a minimum of (35) minutes prior to the start. Also, let one of the committee members know if you will be attending the “Annual Awards Ceremony at the Imperial Ping hotel on November 5, 2016 starting at 6:00 PM.
Lanna, 24.10.16
We had a reasonable turnout at Lanna today – 12 members and a guest meaning that POY points were accumulated. Welcome back to John Noyes and Ted Taylor. The course was in good shape apart from some watery patches and we had a reasonably unhindered round given that there some kiddies under instruction ahead of us. Anyway, today was a Stableford Nassau with Curtis Nickel taking out first prize with 37 points. Gary Lyon and Keith Taylor shared the Front 9 prize with 18 points each, and Mark Morris tied with Julian Wing for the Back 9 prize with 17 points each. We are in the middle of the Annual Tournament so numbers were on the low side, but hopefully next week we will see the Lanna numbers climb again.
North Hill, 21.10.16
Everyone must be feeling the pressure of the Annual Tournament as we only had 12 starters today with one dropping out after a few holes to attend family matters. Clear blue skies were nice for a change and there were some really good scores for the day. North Hill is getting busier with a bus load of Malaysians and some Koreans on the course today but the Marshals kept things moving nicely and our three groups were not interrupted at all completing our rounds in about 4 hours.
The hidden Birdie hole went off today after four weeks on the par 4 16th hole and was won by Brian Heuston. There will be no birdie hole next week because of the Annual Tournament.
Leon Smiler finally kept his ball on his own fairway today and this resulted in him winning with 41 points and apparently there was still a little leeway for even more improvement next time out so his playing partners tell me, so watch out for the Kiwi. Brian Heuston came in second with 40 points telling us that the greens and his putting were the main reason on the day. In third place was Curtis Nickle with 39 points and out of the prizes but still playing to his handicap with a worthwhile 36 points was Ralph Hamilton. Well done one and all.
Maejo, 21.10.16
Today we had 12 members, 11 players in the competition and Fergal played his second Hcp card. In several areas the course is still pretty muddy and wet, especially the banks up to the greens. So we decided again to play Lift, clean and place.
Tied for third place came in Ron,Nigel and Jack C. with each 32 points. Julian second with 33 and Ric was today’s winner with 37 points. Well done and we hope to see you all on Wednesday next week for “The race to Mae Ping” on Inthanon. Please be advised to be there no later then 8:30.
Inthanon, 19.10.16
Another day in paradise, beautiful weather and only one other group on the course! Only 4 CMSG members due to Mae Jo and 2 guests. Mr. X was one but his game collapsed today allowing Peter Haddon to pick up the Smiley fund. Barry Ochitwa collected 2nd prize.
Maejo, 19.10.16 (2nd leg of CMSG 2016 Annual Tournament)
Today we had (45) members participating in the 2nd leg of our Annual Tournament all hoping to repeat or improve on their results from the 1st leg at Lanna. Again, everyone arrived on time, received their score cards, joined their group for a on-schedule start. We again, thank all the players for arriving on-time subsequently resulting in a smooth and orderly start.
Today we played under sunny skies, and at times extremely hot conditions, from the start to the finish of our respective rounds. The group going off the front nine completed their round in 4 hour plus and those starting off the back nine were somewhat slower and finished in a little over 4-1/2 hours.
Relative to the results today where no one scored out of the buffer zone ( possibly protecting their handicap) the winner are as follows:
Over all finishes:
- First place honors goes to Dave Beck posting a score of (36) points.
- In 2nd place we had a tie with Sarinee Livingstone and Craig Morriss with (34) points apiece.
- 3rd place today goes to Barry Ralston with (33) points
Nassau Winners:
Front Nine
1st place Curtis Nickel with (19) points and 2nd place with (18) points goes to Jim Hopkins
Back Nine
Julian Wing took 1st place with (18) points.
Congratulations goes out to all of today’s winners.
Also we would like to thank Keith Freeman for making sure there were pictures this time and also a big thank you to Michael (Kuzie) Kuzmich and Harry Nieuwland for logging in all the scores after the match!
Also we look forward seeing everyone at the 3rd leg of our tournament being held at Inthanon golf course on Wednesday, October 26th with a scheduled starting time of 9:00 AM. Lets all plan on being at the course a minimum of (40 minutes) prior to the start!
The Winners: Sarinee, Dave, Barry, Jim, Dao
Luncheon Chatter among the girls!
Harry logging in the scores under watchful eyes!

Lanna, 17.10.14 (1st leg of CMSG 2016 Annual Tournament)
As referenced above this was the first day of the Annual Tournament where 53 CMSG members turned up at Lanna all on time for an orderly and smooth kick-off. It initially appeared that it could be a wet start as the morning was quite damp with overcast skies but as the round progressed it became sunny making it an ideal day for golf. The starter initially stated that we might be able to start off #1 hole of course #1 and #10 hole of course #2 but, unfortunately that did not materialize so we had all 14 groups going off the first tee. We did start off 25 minutes early though, so that was a bonus. It should be noted that we allowed 8 minutes between groups but we progressed some what quicker resulting in the last group ( group 14) teeing off 25 minutes earlier than their published tee-time. Also, as group #14 was teeing off the par 3 #10 hole our 1st group was finishing up on the par 5 18th hole.
Plenty of prize money today so 10 prizes were awarded. Outright winners were Keith Freeman and Graham Adams with 38 points each, closely followed by Tom Berger, Nigel Stubbs, and Diane Mayo with 37 points. We awarded Nassau prizes as well – on the Front 9 Barry Ochitwa took first place with 20 points closely followed by Sarinee Livingstone and Shaun Stewart who shared 2nd place with 19 points. Pretty much the same on the Back 9 with Jim Hopkins taking first place with 20 points and Dao Beece coming second with 19 points. Nearest the Pin prizes will be awarded at the Annual Party on November 5th. Thanks again for everyone of our members making this a great start to our annual tournament.
We apologize for not taking any photos of the winners today – possibly at Maejo we will do better.
We do have the following photos:
The girls: Diane, Nok, JJ
The 1st group ( Lawrence, Gary, Harry, and eventual winner Keith)
North Hill, 14.10.16
Today we had 15 line up for our stableford event, 14 members and one ex member returning to the fold and submitting a first card for handicap, welcome back Scott Lumsden. Clear blue skies and the occasional light breeze but still a hot round under the unrelenting Thai sun. Something new for our regular golfers, we have been advised that it is now OB on the left hand side of the 7th hole where some people (take note Leon) have been going for the green from the tee on the dog leg left over the water. The club considers this dangerous to those teeing off on the 6th hole and those putting out on the 5th hole, so if your going to have a go make sure you make the green or you are OUT OF BOUNDS, there will be a sign there before our next round. The hidden birdie hole was the par 3 17th which only 3 managed to par and there were no birdies.
The winner today was Camilla Dwyer who had an excellent round with 41 points, runner-up was Barry Ochitwa with 36 points playing to his handicap and coming in third was Keith Freeman with 35 points, all looking in good form for the Annual Tournament starting this monday at Lanna. Well done everyone and see you nice and early on Monday.
Maejo, 14.10.16
This Friday for our regular scheduled Stableford event we had (19) members teeing off from both the front nine and last nine holes. Today, for a change , we played our entire round under sunny skies. Luckily, we has some variable light breezes that made the condition ideal for golf. For those starting on the back nine holes they finished their respective rounds in just under (4) hours. The groups starting on hole #1 were held up by a slow group of golfers resulting in a 4-1/2 plus hour round.
Today we had a 3-way tie for 2nd place being shared by Diane Mayo, Barry Ralston, and Rob Grootenhuijs all posting a score of 36 points. First place honors today with (37) points was shared by Nigel Stubbs and Ken Nalder. Hats off to all of today’s winners!
Diane, Barry, Rob, Ken, Nigel
Special Notice Anton Buijs
Today ( Friday 14 Oct.) at 6 pm at Anton’s home there will be a ceremony.
Tomorrow (Saturday) is the burning between 1 and 2 pm at Ban Pong.
Inthanon, 12.10.16
Those of us from central Chiang Mai set off with some trepidation about the weather conditions we might expect after it had rained heavily with thunder all through the night. Lo and behold Inthanon turned on all its charm and it was sunny and dry until our golf was over. 8 players with the same guest as before who we shall call Mr.X. Despite being cut almost every week he won again. His handicap will now be 10 so he’s hardly a sandbagger.Congratulations Mr.X.
Maejo, 12.10.16
This Wednesday we had (16) members arriving at Maejo for a Stableford competition regardless of the previous evening thunder storms and morning rains. As usual we all teed off on schedule from both the front nine holes and the back nine holes. We started our round under a light drizzle but after 3 holes we were playing under a downpour of extremely heavy rains but luckily the rain abruptly ended for the balance of our round. In summary, the first few holes were played under nightmare conditions and remaining holes the weather was ideal. Needless to say, all the fairways were completely water logged subsequently we initiated the “Lift , clean, and place rule prior to teeing off.
As far as the results Diane Mayo took 3rd place honors with (30) points even though her card indicated (29) points and tying with Nigel Stubbs. 2nd place today goes to Shaun Steward posting a score of (32) points. 1st place today goes to Julian Wing posting a score of (36) points. It should be mentioned that Julian has back to back 1st place finishes.
Shaun, Nigel, Julian ( Diane not attending post golf awards)
Anton Buijs
It is with a sad heart to report that one of our fondest members Anton Buijs had a severe stroke and passed away this morning. Anton was seventy-five (75) years old and he was enjoying the companionship of his close friends during a golf outing in Chiang Rai. He will surely be missed by all our members!
Always Smiling
Enjoying a cool Beer!
God Bless you Anton as you were a true friend to all!
At this time we would like to report that the day prior to Anton’s death ; Anton played one of his better golf rounds of the year. As reported by Rob and Harry, Anton was so pleased with his achievement as noted in his scorecard:
Anton posted an impressive score of (38) points completely trashing his Dutch companions and closest friends. Great round Anton you went out as the “Champion” and highly deserved!
You will continue to remain our Champion Dutch Representative
Lanna, 10.10.16
Only 14 members at Lanna today. A warm welcome to new member Ronny Peters who is going for his handicap. The weather was good but the course was playing a little difficult and scores were pretty low. None of us can figure out why, but maybe the fast jumpy greens caught a few of us out. Anyway, there was a tie for 1st place between Barry Ochitwa and Julian Wing with 33 points each, and Keith Freeman came in 2nd with 32 points. Next Monday is the first Tournament event, so see you all then.
North Hill, 07.10.16
There were 19 members present for today’s stableford event. No rain, cloudy skies, humid conditions. Course finally surrendering to the recent wet conditions in only two spots, one on the back nine and one on the front nine, so not bad overall. Greens very good all round although some did think that the plastic surround in the hole was a little too high resulting in missed putts, but overall very good.
The first three ball was held up by a five ball in front but a word to the marshall and they were jumped a few holes ahead which allowed the first group to finish in 4 hours but the rest took a little longer. Nice to know that the course marshall does in fact move things along, well done North Hill.
The mystery birdie hole again goes unclaimed, although many hit the 14th in one not one birdie was recorded, all the better for the winner next week. there were four tied for third place with 35 points, Camilla, Smiley, Garry & Shaun, with Leon Smiler playing to his handicap with 36 points to take second place and the overall winner on the day was Sarinee Livingstone with 38 points.
Welcome back to Shannon Livingstone (hope the Mrs. bought you a drink after the game mate) & Haydn Patterson who joined us after the game and hopes to make an appearance at Lanna on Monday as well.
Mae Jo, 07.10.16
This Friday we had (22) members teeing off a Maejo for our Friday stableford event. Similar to last Wednesday we stared our round under perfect conditions but upon the sun coming out it, as usual, became extremely hot. Luckily we had some light breezes that made it a little more bearable.
Relative to our match results Nigel Stubbs took 3rd place with (33) points followed by a 3-way tie for 2nd place being shared by Jomo Mac Dermott, Michael ( Kuzie ) Kuzmich, and Ken Nalder all posting (34) points. Alone in 1st place was Barry Ralston with (37) points. Hats off to all of today’s winners!
Not in Photo the winner Barry silently rushed off with his winning!
As previously notified starting November 7, 2016 we will also be playing each Monday morning at Maejo. Also, don’t forget that staring in November our Tee-off time will be 7:08 am for the months of November,December, & January 2017!
Inthanon, 05.10.16
Another glorious day in Paradise.Course in excellent condition, particularly the greens. 8 fanatics played, one was a guest and the bugger won! Dave Beck came 2nd with 32 points. Inthanon members should note that on the 22nd of this month there is a FREE tournament with FREE hotel and evening meal.
What other course looks after members like this?
Mae Jo, 05.10.16
Another great turn-out as (25) members and (1) guest joined us this Wednesday at Maejo for a Stableford Nassau competition. Based on everyone arriving on time we all teed off on schedule from both the front nine and back nine tees. At the start of our round we played under overcast skies which subsequently resulted in fantastic weather conditions for the first half of our round. As the norm for this time of the year, the clouds dispersed resulting in bright sunny conditions making the last half our our round extremely hot.
On to the winners today! Taking / winning the front nine holes with (19) points was Nigel Stubbs. The back nine winner today with (21) points was the honorable Craig Morriss. Our overall winner today, even being accused of shaving some points to protect his handicap, was Andy Galwey with (21) points. Andy also stated, “It is called course management and has nothing to do with protecting one’s handicap!”
In closing we look forward to seeing everyone this coming Friday for a straight stableford competition.
Lastly, the “Annual Tournament” is approaching quickly so notify your club captains and or e-mail Jack Kuzina what events you will be participating in! Note after Friday October 14, 2016 the entrance to the first event will be closed!
Lanna, 03.10.16
Well, we now know that the Lanna regulars are not just a bunch of fair-weather golfers, because 20 of them rolled up to the course on an overcast Monday morning and proceeded to watch the rain pour down. Undeterred, they set off in ascending handicap order around the Racecourse 3 and Course 1 whereupon the rain held off to provide us all with an enjoyable round.
Good to welcome back Mark Morris for his 6 month break and Shannon Livingstone for the next few weeks. The low net scores were close together again so there were 6 winners today. Keith Freeman, Garry Walker, and Shannon Livingstone all got their antes back by achieving net 75 scores, Frank Schwarz and Dave Beck tied for second place with net scores of 73, but the overall winner was Sarinee Livingstone with an impressive net 72.
Hope to see you all next week for the usual Stableford round on courses 1+2.
