Preamble
The purpose of the International is to promote socialisation between members who would not usually play regularly with each other, teams being made up of the same nationalities but often members that play at different courses.
Team Nomination
Members can nominate teams provided minimum 3 members come from the same country. The 4th player will be a “Phantom Player”, see details below.
Please forward details of your team to Roger Bishop no later than 10th May.
If you cannot form a team
Obviously there are many countries where it would be impossible to form a team, simply because there are not minimum 3 members from that country. This is no reason not to join the international! If you like to take part please register your name to Roger Bishop asap.
In this instance, the Committee (via Roger Bishop) will decide on the most logical geograpically team setup.
When all entries are in and the deadline has been reached, the Committee will allocate all these players into teams.
All teams formed by the Committee will be eligible for the Trophy and all other prizes.
For planning purposes we need to know numbers as soon as possible. So please register your interest asap even if you cannot form a team.
Any members who wish to join, but not be involved in the Tournament or prize money can be accommodated, but please register yourself asap.
How a phantom works:
If a team only has three members they are at a huge disadvantage as they would only have a choice of three balls to select from instead of 4 at each shot. so in this instance, the team would be allowed a “phantom”
Each player in turn would be designated the phantom at each hole. The player first alphabetically would be designated the phantom at holes 1, 4, 7, 10, 13 and 16. The player second alphabetically would be the phantom at holes 2, 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17 and the remaining player would be the phantom at holes 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18.
The designated phantom gets TWO shots from each position at their respective holes, BUT they have to go 1st and 4th. Ie the phantom drives, then players 2 and 3 drive then the phantom drives again. The captain selects which of the 4 balls to use, the other three get picked up. The phantom plays his/her 2nd shot, then players 2 and 3 and then the phantom plays his second ball second shot. This continues until the ball is holed out and the next player becomes the phantom at the next hole.
It is essential that the phantom always goes 1st and 4th, especially with putting. If the phantom goes first and nearly holes it, he would find it easier to realign slightly if he goes second, that is why he must wait for players 2 and 3 to putt before he gets his second chance.
The International Rules of the Game:
- It is a stroke play event
- As per last year, six holes will be played from the white tee, 6 holes will be played from the green tee and 6 holes will be played from the red tee. The Committee will decide which holes are played from which tee and cards indicating the required tee will be provided.
- Teams consist of 4 players and the team handicap will be 1/8 of the combined handicap of the 4 players, using the green tee for handicap purposes. (The green tee at Green Valley is the equivalent of the yellow tee elsewhere).
- Each team must nominate a captain who has the final decision on everything. If no captain is agreed on by the team, then the Committee will recognise the lowest handicap player as the captain.
- Each member of the team has to have a minimum of 3 drives each (not including par 3s) and whoever’s drive is used must be marked on the scorecard. If any member of the team does not have 3 drives, then that team will be disqualified, so pick the drives that you use carefully!
- The way it works – At each individual hole look at the card to see which tee you must play from. All 4 players drive at each hole. The captain selects which drive to use and then the three players whose ball is not being used, pick their balls up. The ball selected is marked and all 4 players then play from that spot. Players can play in any order, the player who’s ball was selected, does not have to go first. Once again, the captain selects which ball is the best and all 4 players play from that spot and so on until the ball is holed.
- If the ball marked is on the fairway or the surrounds of the green then the team may “place” their balls within 6 inches of the mark. If the marked ball is in the rough, the semi rough or a hazard then the balls must be “dropped” within 6 inches.
- The score that counts is the score when the first ball is holed. Therefore, be careful when putting. If the first member hits the ball to a few inches, then go up and mark it! If you tap it in, that is the score that will count and you have denied the other team members a chance of holing it for one shot less.
- 3 person teams can compete if one member drops out or if we cannot make up numbers. In this case the team handicap will be 1/6 of the combined handicap and each member must get in 4 drives (not including par 3s) and the team will receive a “phantom” player
