29.01.2018 – Stableford Maejo

North Hill, 29.01.18

Today we had 8 members including 2 submitting their final cards.  Because of slow play on the crowded course 2 members were unable to finish — they had appointments which couldn’t be broken. The winner on 36 was Camilla Dwyer.

Tee off times for Mondays in February are currently

  • 05/2 — 8:20 — back nine first
  • 12/2 — 8:20
  • 19/2 — 8:20
  • 19/2 — 8:30

Due to high season these may change, so please check Weekly Calendar before playing.

Maejo, 26.01.18

This Friday we had (15) members and (1) guest competing in our Friday’s stableford event.  Again, another perfect weather wise day for being on the links as again we teed-off under cool cloudless skies that that steadily evolved into sunny and warm conditions.  We all completed our front nine holes in slightly less than (2) hours but we were behind a number of groups on the back nine that resulted in finishing our round in approximately 4-1/2 hours.  It should be noted that we are now in the peak high season as Maejo had more than 200 bookings today.

The winners today are as follows:

  • First place tie being shared by Ronny Peters and John DeJong with (35) points each.
  • Second place goes to Ted Taylor with (34) points

The winner’s circle:  John, Ted, Ronny

North Hill, 26.01.18

Australia Day, you bloody beauty, Aussie winners are grinners.  There were 20 members present with 2 new members still going for handicap and not eligible for the competition and thank you to Brian and Camilla for accompanying them around the course.  That left 18 in the stableford event and 16 in the Tiger Ball pairs team event and thank you to Denise and Milton for organizing that event.  With 80 people teeing off behind us and 20 in our group there were over 100 people on the course with no hold ups or waiting and all our groups finished in just over 4 hours and I would like to congratulate the management and staff at North Hill as their organisational skills are to be commended.  I would also like to thank them on behalf of Chiangmai Social Golfers and North Hill Members for donating four prizes for ‘nearest the pin’ on all par threes for our group.

The ‘Birdie Hole’ on Number 1 was taken out after only two weeks by Milton Reynolds and he also won the Stableford event with 36 points. Runners-up were  Garry Walker and Peter (Smiley) Haddon with 35 points and third was Yung Beece.  The winners of the Tiger Ball pairs were North Hill Captain Garry Walker and Vice Captain Ian Fraser with 70 points (thankfully this competition was organized by another member).  The four nearest the pins went to Yung Beece, Peter (Smiley) Haddon, Denise Reynolds and Ian Fraser.  Well done to all concerned and Happy Australia Day with celebrations going on at the Down Under Bar in town and Yummy Pizza at Hang Dong tonight……Cheers and more Beers.

Yung, Ian, Smiley, Milton, Denise, Garry.

Maejo, 24.01.18

The following are today’s winners:

  • First Place with 34 points                                     Gordon Langtree

As noted in this years competition we have members from all the courses (Lanna, Maejo, North Hills, Inthanon ) on the top “20” list, in addition members of various handicap ranges are listed as compared to 2017 where only the low handicap members dominated the competition.

As expected, those members who play the most rounds per week currently dominate the top 5-10 spots but as the year progresses (with the limit of 30 rounds) will result in numerous other members who only play once or twice a week having a good chance of finishing in the top few spots; of course depending on the scores of their respective 30 rounds. In summary, our goal is to give all members a chance of winning regardless of how many rounds they play per week.

In closing, please submit any comments or suggestions you may have concerning this subject matter.

The complete list of allocated points per member can be seen on the following link:

POY as of January 22, 2018

For reference the 2017 Player of the Year was Ronny Peters with Ashley Kim Sing coming in second place

Lanna, 22.01.18

This Monday we had (19) members teeing off at Lanna on course 1&2 for a stableford competition.  Our scheduled start time of 9:06 am was pushed back as a 5-ball (all in carts) and then a 6-ball (all walking ) teed off ahead of our groups.  It should be noted that the 6-ball in front of our first group was comprised of 5 males and 1 female , all of college age, with their average tee-shot landing in the middle of the fairway with an average distance of 250 yards plus.  Again, being the high season we completed our round in slightly over (5) hours.  Luckily we had ideal weather conditions making this longer round more bearable.

At this time we would like to take this opportunity to welcome a new member Paul DeMinico from the states who joined out society today. Welcome Paul and we look forward to seeing you on the links in the near future.

Relative to the results:

  • First place with 37 points                                      Jack Kuzina
  • 2nd place tie with 35 points                                  Denise Reynolds & Julian Wing
  • 3rd place with 33 points                                         Barry Ochitwa

Today’s Winner’s Circle:  Denise, Jack, Julian

For reference no one won the “Birdie Hole on Hole 10” so the pot is up to 300 baht.

Lastly, please note that next Monday the scheduled tee-off time is back to 8:20 am.

North Hill, 22.01.18

Mae Jo, 22.01.18

Only a small field of 9 players for todays game in slightly warmer conditions. In 2nd on 31 was Kuzie and our winner today was Bob on 32 points. Low number of players and low scores ! Hope to see a few more on Wednesday.

Kuzie and Bob.

North Hill, 19.01.18

There were 23 golfers for todays Stableford round including two new members, Mr Park (Korea) and Miss Chanitapha (Oil) Laechoe (Thai) and we welcome them both to the club and wish them good luck in establishing their handicaps.  We had groups going off front and back and completed rounds in just over 4 hours. No takers for the first week of the birdie hole on hole 1 an easy par five and that did surprise everyone.  With 21 golfers in the competition the winner was Roger Mack with 37 points and tied in second place were Milton Reynolds and Garry Walker with 36 points and there was 1 DNF.

Next week is an 8am tee off for a Tiger Ball (Multiplier) event.  Random draw for pairs partners will be carried out at the same time as the random groupings draw a half hour prior to tee off (That’s at 7:30am).  I could only get a booking for 6 groups (the same as we had this week) as there is an 8:30 booking for 80 golfers going off behind us.  We will be off both tees.  We will still have our regular Stableford winner and prize being split 50/50 with the Tiger Ball pairs winner.  So no runners up prizes.

Milton, Roger & Garry

Today it became apparent that some of our 19 members in attendance play better in 6 hour rounds than faster ones! The birdie hole remains unclaimed and rolls over to next week when President Jack will be in charge for a stableford on courses 1 and 2 with a 9.07 start time.

In third today was John Noyes with 37 points, but todays joint winners on 39 points were Victor Schneeweiss and Kim Stogner. Congratulations.

Maejo, 12.01.18

This Friday we had (12) members and (1) guest teeing off at Maejo under cloudy skies and cool conditions.  As the round progressed the temperature continued to drop to the point we thought we were playing in the UK.  To say the least it did not seem we were playing in Thailand.  Even under these weather conditions the golf the course was extremely busy but we managed to complete our round in a little over (4) hours.

Relative to the Stableford results the order of winners are as follows:

  • 1st place                      Ronny Peters               36 points
  • 2nd place                    Mike Roykroft             35 points
  • 3rd place                     Alex Steward               33 points

It should be noted that this was the first day of the new “Player of the Year” points format.

Mike, Ronny, Alex

Hats off to today’s winners!

 North Hill, 12.01.18

Today there were 22 members and one guest playing the usual stableford event on an overcast and believe it or not cold day at North hill.  We were a little under pressure from the start as we were advised that a juniors tournament would begin at 10am.  Anyway we got six groups underway off the 15th tee and all but one group finished in front of the comp with only one group having to play behind the juniors for three holes only, the best outcome for all considering the circumstances.   The big surprise for the day was that the birdie hole #12 was finally taken out after nine weeks by Jim lockhart, well done Jim.  The winner today was Gordon Langtry with 40 points, who obviously likes getting the harder back holes out of the way early in his round.  Tied in second place were Garry Walker, Mark Morris and Roger Mack all with 36 points.  Farewell to Hayden Patterson until March was carried out in the back bar and good to see Curtis Nickel who joined us after the game and who has been Unfortunately out with a bad back in previous weeks.

Mark, Gorden, Jim, Roger, Garry.

In two weeks time our Friday game will be on Australia Day and we are hoping to have something a little different on the day so keep it in mind and we will post more next week.
