Match Report December 2016

North Hill, 30.12.16

Quite a fun day at North Hill today. One member (who shall remain anonymous) dropped off his bag, parked his car, opened the boot, and “arrgh – where are my clubs?” “Will have to call the wife and find out if they are at home, but I’ll rent some clubs and play anyway”. Not sure when the penny dropped – perhaps while walking past said clubs on the way in through the drop off area? Anyway thanks for being a good sport and letting me publish this little snippet. An absolute “Classic”!

We had 17 members and a couple of guests with perfect weather and we played off both tees so it was a quick round. There was a tie for the runner-up position with Roger Mack and Ian Fraser obtaining 34 points each, and there was also a tie for the winning position with Lawrence Nahlik and Shaun Stewart both scoring 38 points.

Gazza’s difficult Birdie hole – Par 4 #7 – was won this week after accumulating for 8 weeks. Well done to Dao Beece for that achievement. Other notable achievements included Ian Fraser’s 3 balls OB on one hole only to be followed by birdies on the next two holes. It’s a frustrating game sometimes.

Next week sees the start of a new event – Mondays at North Hill – which will be hosted by Ian Fraser until the return of the “soon to be re-elected” North Hill captain Garry Walker, so please come and play. For some reason we are not experiencing the usual high season large volumes of players.

Mae Jo, 30.12.16

Todays stableford attracted 16 members and two guests today.

Dew on the ground and cool temperatures made for great golfing weather, although the course was busy today and reletively slow.

Coming in third today was Frank Schwarz with 35 points, second was Diane Mayo with 36 points. After a long absence on the winners rostrum, the glory went to Stuart Duncan with a great 38 points. A Happy New Year to all CMSG members.

Frank, Diane and Stuart.

Inthanon, 28.12.16

Ten CMSG members got off to a prompt start despite Inthanon having 260 other golfers teeing off same day. Weather was beautiful, the course was in good condition and resulted in some good scores.

Overall winner was Leon Smiler who astounded his playing partners by staying on the correct fairway most of the time. Second place went to Curtis Nickel who followed up his Hari Punchai abilities to prove he’s no flash in the pan.

Leon and Curtis

Mae Joe, 28.12.16

The early tee time brought out 11 players today for a Strokeplay event. The Scores were on the lower side with Stuart Duncan coming in 3rd shooting a net 76, with a net 74 in 2nd was Diane Mayo and the Winner of the day with a net 73 was Tom Burger.

Stuart, Diane & Tom

Lanna, 26.12.16

Well Lanna on Mondays certainly isn’t losing popularity because today we had 21 members that included 5 of the girls who have not been seen for a while. We played courses 1+2 in a normal Stableford fashion so we had 6 groups and managed to start way ahead of our allotted time. The round seemed a bit slow because of the Korean influx preceding us, but things actually flowed quite well for 4 and a half hours.

Keith Taylor snuck into 3rd place just ahead of his wife Noi with 34 points (you are supposed to let the wife win Keith) and David Urlwin-Smith was runner-up with 35 points, but the undisputed winner was Inthira (Goy) Patterson who left the rest of us in the dust with 41 points. Nice going everyone.

Next week will be Stroke play around courses 3+1 so get practising. See you all next year.

David, Goy, and Keith

Mae Jo, 26.12.16

Twelve members and two guests came to enjoy todays match play against the course. Inevitably some enjoyed it more than others!!

Two members, John de Jong and Robert Coulter were completing their third handicap cards, leaving ten in the competition.

Tied for third at 2 down were Fergal Barry Murphy and Nigel Stubbs. At two up in second was the current man in form, Tom Berger. Way out in front at six up was Andy Galwey, who will be enjoying a new handicap on Wednesday.

P.S. If you are unhappy with your current Captain then please do not elect him at the A.G.M. This is preferable, from his point of view, to being killed on the course!!!

Fergal, Andy, Nigel and Tom.

North Hill, 23.12.16.

And so it came to pass, that 17 wise CMSG golfers embarked upon a misty morning’s adventure around North Hill this Friday, December 23rd. A lovely dew covered course awaited some good professional shots but perhaps that was wishful thinking. Personally, I think that the dew on the ground wrecked every putt that I attempted on the front nine, but I am sure that my playing partners might think otherwise.

Anyway, it was a pretty quick round for the 5 groups and most players happily awaited news of the results at Mix Restaurant. Thanks to Brian for helping with card reading – some rather illegible as usual. Nobody has yet won the Birdie hole (#7) so that continues to jackpot. Today’s format was Stableford Nassau with equal prizes, and the results were as follows:

Overall Winner : A very surprised – Soren Nielson (35 points)

Winners Front 9 : The Ladies – Camilla Dwyer and Tayakorn Saenjuy (tied – 17 points each)

Winner Back 9 : Curtis Nickel (21 points)

See you all next week for a boring Stableford only event.

Merry Christmas to all CMSG Members.

Tayakorn, Soren, Camilla, & Curtis

Mae Jo, 23.12.16.

Rudolph the Red Tee Stableford attracted 15 members this morning, most happy that he only comes once per year! playing off the shorter tees creates a totally different golf course and proved the undoing of several.

The course was relatively quiet and the first three ball finished in three hours, the other three groups all completeing inside four hours.

Results wise, Diane Mayo and Michael Kizmich tied for third place with 35 points. Todays winners, with 38 points, were Silvan Schwarz and Barry Ralsron. Congratulations to all todays winners.

May I wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

Diane, Barry, Silvan Nad Kuzie

Our very own kataoy, Stuart Duncan!

Scramble Hariphunchai, 22.12.16

We had a total of 24 Players registered on time but one member did not find the Golf Course and gave up looking for it at 09:30 this morning. Everyone else was ready to go at this nice cool morning.

I would like to mention that this Golf Course is in fantastic shape and well maintained. The Club house is small but very nicely done, the facilities itself are clean and functional. Everyone has a big smile on their face. The food is very good and the prices are really low for a Golf Course (Can of Singh and 2 sodas = 90 Baht).

The playing time was for some groups around 03:30 hours and others 04:30, reason unknown.

And once more it has been proven that our handicap system works, that the Ambrose system is a fair and correct way to calculate the team Handicaps. The first 5 places are only 3 shots apart.

Here are the details:

In sixth place with a Gross of 94 and a net 67 Tayakorn Saenjuy, Roscoe Butler and Lawrence Nahlik.

In 5th place with a Gross of 73 – net 58, Jomo Mac Dermott, Peter Haddon, Leon Smiler, Barry Ochitwa.

Tied in 3rd place with a Gross 75 – net 57, Terry Redding, Keith Freeman, Curtis Nickel, Soren Nielson and with a Gross 67 – net 57, Gerry Brimacombe, Yung Beece, Frank Schwarz, Silvan Schwarz.

In second place with a Gross 69 – net 56, Robert Green, Ralph Hamilton, Camila Dwyer, Brian Heuston.

The Winner today with a Gross 68 – net 55, Tom Berger, Shaun Stewart, Roger Mack, Ric Cameron.

Lots of Pictures are posted at Facebook https://www.facebook.com/chiangmaisocialgolfers.org/

Mae Jo, 21.12.16

10 members came out for the early Wednesday morning shift at Mae Jo, probably also because of the Away Game tomorrow the group was smaller then usually. The weather was very nice with low temperatures at the beginning of our round. The scores however stayed cold.

In 3rd place with 30 points was Silvan Schwarz, in 2nd place with 33 points was Nigel Stubbs and the Winner today with 34 points was Tom Berger. Congratulation to todays winners.

Remember on Friday we all play of the red tees, so wear something red or a skirt.

Silvan, Tom & Nigel

Lanna, 19.12.16

Just small crowd of 12 members (welcome to new member Peter Roberts) and 1 guest graced the dew covered fields of Lanna this morning. They said that we didn’t have a booking but they seemed to have forgotten that I now book under the name of CMSG instead of “golfers” (Last week the big board at Tee#1 said “Mr CMSG” for our tee times). I have tried to explain that everyone who plays golf is called a “golfer” but it has fallen on deaf ears every time.

Today we managed to start 30 minutes ahead of our allotted time and all groups finished in around 4 hours 15 minutes – so much for all those later bookings that I was worried about. We played “Match Play against the Course” (or Par) but nobody managed to beat the course this time. Yukio Doi came close with (-3), but the joint winners were Lawrence Nahlik and Kim Stogner with (-1) each.

Lanna has assured me that the rates for CMSG for 2017 are 850 baht (Green Fee+Caddie Fee) and 600 baht for carts, so don’t be strangers.

Lawrence, Kim, & Yukio

Mae Jo, 19.12.16

A very misty course greeted 7 members for todays stableford.

Before the report I would like to congratulate the following for their performance in the Mae Jo members challenge yesterday.

Frank Schwarz (low gross), Ric Cameron (winner flight c) and Michael Kuzmich (runner up flight c). A special mention to Kuzie who shot 102 and was awarded a handicap of 26! Back to 14 on wednesday!!

The first 3 ball completed the front nine in 1 hour 35 minutes and then hit the inevitable log jam on the tenth. However the round was still completed in just under 4 hours. The mist not clearing until this group was on the 15th!

Only two winners today. Second was Nigel Stubbs with 33 points. Out in front again was Paul Brunning with 34 points.

Golfers (not gorillas) in the mist.

Nigel and Paul

North Hill, 16.12.12

It was a cold, blustery, overcast, rainy Friday morning and 26 golfers decided to turn up at North Hill. What is the matter with you all – don’t you have homes? Well anyway, 7 groups teed off from tees 1 and 10 and actually finished in pretty good time because there was virtually nobody else on the course once again. Thanks to Smiley for helping organise the unexpected large contestant volume – much appreciated. We had 1 guest and 1 rumoured deliberate tearing up of a scorecard (couldn’t have been much worse than my round) so there are 24 members in the results table today.

Rob Grootenhuijs was awarded the runner-up prize for his 37 points but the joint winners were Ralph Hamilton and Camilla Dwyer who tied with 38 points each. Congratulations to you 3 – that was pretty good going for today. Still no winner for the 7th hole Birdie prize. See you all next week for a Stableford Nassau event.

Rob, Camilla, & Ralph

Mae Jo, 16.12.12

Nineteen members were greeted with somewhat curious weather for the time of year for todays stableford. Occasional drizzle and light rain made for cool temperatures and perfect golf weather.

High season is now well and truly upon us and we must remain patient when we reach the turn. Remember we play a lot faster than most visiting groups!

Todays results saw a tie for fourth between Paul Brunning and Nigel Stubbs on 34 points. In second was Jerry Buckley with 35 points. Leading the field today were Michael Kuzmich and Graham Adams with 37 points. Congratulations to all.

Next Friday, the 23rd, is Rudolph The Red Tee Stableford. Everyone off the red tees. Should make for some interesting scoring!

Kuzie, Nigel, Jerry, Paul and Graham.

Inthanon, 14.12.16

11 CMSG members showed up today to find the course once again in great condition. Most scores were pretty good except for Yours Truly and Lennart Larson so could be a couple of sets of clubs on the market soon!

However 3 players triumphed over the course, Curtis Nichol with 35 points edged out Ralph Hamilton and Gary Burke who shared second place.

Gary, Curtis & Ralph

Mae Jo, 14.12.16

Eleven members decided to rise but not shine for todays stableford.

Three fourballs had the front nine to themselves on a quiet day on the course. However, on reaching the tenth tee the starters had inexplicably put a very slow three ball in front of us, even though holes 1 and 2 were completely clear. We therefore had to wait on every shot round the back nine!

In third place today was Tom Berger with a score of 30 points. Sharing first place were Andy Galwey and Calvin Davis with 31 points. Maybe the early start time is taking its toll on us oldies!

Tom and Andy

Lanna, 12.12.16

There was another good turnout today at Lanna with 18 members and 1 guest playing the Stableford Nassau format around courses 1+2. But there were literally hundreds of golfers on the course the whole day, and we were surprised when we were able to get all 5 groups off at our normal time of about 08:10. We followed a Japanese Tournament but weren’t held up so all groups finished in around 4.5 hours.

First prize went to Kim Stogner with 36 points. Front 9 went to Soren Nielson with 20 points and Back 9 to Allen Norris also with 20 points.

Next week is a Par Competition (Match Play against the course) and again we have a late tee off booked, however if today is anything to go by we should attempt to start at the usual time.

It should also be mentioned that Lanna is offering 1-year memberships to expats for 20,000 baht in which the Green Fee/Caddy Fee reduces from 850 baht to 450 baht. Barely any savings if you only play once per week. I am yet to find out what is proposed in the way of Sports days, “CMSG Specials?”, and cart costs for 2017.

Soren, Kim, & Allen

Mae Jo, 12.12.16

10 members arrived for a Stableford Nassau today. Golf is a tough game. A member who will remain nameless, but obvious, had 24 points on the front nine on friday. Today he did not make 20 points in 18 holes!!

Winning the front nine with 20 points was Nigel Stubbs. Taking the back nine with 19 points was Frank Schwarz. Todays overall winner with 39 points was Paul Brunning. Congratulations to all.

The committee are currently working on the slope rating for the photograph!

Frank, Paul and Nigel

North Hill, 09.12.16

Today at North Hill we had 22 members playing Match Play against the Course and we were able to start on the 1st and 10th tees just after 8am. Scores were varied and the Par results in no way reflected the Stableford results. Unfortunately there were a lot of card errors from players and mistakes on the part of the Captain so there are some inconsistencies that require amendment.

In 1st place was Shaun Stewart with a +4, closely followed by Curtis Nickel with +2. Smiley is in the photo but in fact we had his score quite wrong, and 3rd place should have gone to Christian and Brian who both scored big fat zeros. Your captain puts his hand up for most of the errors because he had some Lanna indexes hidden deep within his spreadsheet which certainly didn’t help. Learn from your mistakes, and sorry to Smiley – he likes the limelight anyway. Perhaps I won’t do any more Par rounds.

Curtis, Shaun, & Smiley

Mae Jo, 09.12.16

Perfect golfing weather greeted 17 members today. 2 groups off the first tee and 3 off the tenth.

A stableford format produced some good golf today. In third place was Bob Green with 35 points, 2nd was Andy Galwey with 36 points.

Todays honours go to Michael (Kuzie) Kuzmich. Starting on the tenth he only amassed 13 points, but a great second nine produced 3 consequetive birdies and a gross 37 for a total of 24 points and a 37 point total.

Congratulations to all todays winners.

Andy, Kuzie and Bob

Inthanon, 07.12.16

A cool start to the day but it turned out to be glorious once more. 12 was the turnout, including a guest of Gary Burke’s and a couple of refugees from Mae Jo. Inthanon’s not an easy course so there was much surprise when 4 players had a score of 36. These were Bob Green, Barry Ochitwa, Kim Stogner and Laurence Nahlik. Congratulations to all but I think a special mention should go to Laurence who played beyond his normal game off a handicap of a Nomads h/cap of 25.

So far no sign of the Korean hordes so next week may be as peaceful as today.

Mae Jo, 07.12.16

14 members participated in the early morning hours at Mae Jo in a Match vs. the Course competition. All groups made it around in less then 4 hours despite the fact that the course is filling up with tourists from other Asian Countries.

With a score of -1 in third place was And Galeway, with an even score in second was Tom Berger and at +1 in first place was Nigel Stubbs.

Congratulations to todays Winners. See you all back on Friday for a regular Stableford competition.

Tom, Nigel & Andy

Mae Jo, 05.12.16

10 members set the early alarm to play a strokeplay event in perfect golfing weather.

All three groups started on the tenth tee and had the back nine to themselves. Although some traffic was encountered at the turn everyone finished in around 4 hours.

In third today was Nigel Stubbs with a nett 75, second was David Rickard with a nett 73. Todays winner was Frank Schwarz with a nett 68 but no POY points!!!

Apologies, there is no photograph today but it would not have made a pretty picture!

Lanna, 05.12.16

Today we tried a Stableford format around courses 3 + 1 which was reasonably well received. Not everybody likes course 3, but some do because of its spongy greens and softer fairways. Anyway, it made a nice change not to do the usual Stroke (net) play in which you can’t pick up if you are having a bad hole.

We had 16 members and 1 guest to make up 5 groups. The front groups managed to finish in less than 4.5 hours but the back ones took a little longer. Anyway, we had 4 tied winners today with 36 points – Lawrence Nahlik, Yukio Doi, Mark Morris, and Inge Persson.

The office staff at Lanna had assured me on many occasions that CMSG would have the same “Sports Day” deal as usual even though Sports Days were no longer applicable to Mondays in December. What they neglected to mention was that this only applies to the green fee/caddie fee of 850 baht. Carts used to be extra at 450 baht but they are now unfortunately 600 baht. Hopefully this won’t deter too many people this month. It remains to be seen what price structure they are going to propose for 2017.

North Hill, 02.12.16

A nice day at Koolpunt-9 this morning saw 15 members tee off early in 4 groups because of the expected influx of golfing tourists. My thanks to everyone for sorting yourselves and the caddies out and keeping to the times, as there were a lot of other people playing today. They were even sending groups of the 10th tee and others were jumping around to vacant holes in order to not be held up.

Welcome back to Gary Burke who took out 3rd place with 35 points. Ralph Hamilton came 2nd with 36 points, but the winner was Camilla Dywer who scored 38 points. Next week will be a “Match Play against the Course” for a change, starting as soon as possible after 8:00am. See you all then.

Mae Jo, 02.12.16

23 members and 1 guest took part in a stableford competition on our first early start of the year.

Perfect golfing weather produced some good results.

Tied for third were Ric Cameron and David Rickard with 34 points. A three way tie for second on 35 points saw Barry Ralston, Ken Nalder and Tom Berger in the camera lens.

Alone in first place was Calvin Davis with 37 points. Congratulations to you all.
